Today I've been reading through entry-level resumés, cover-letters and intro emails today for our ambassador program. A lot of these applicants are in their last year or recently graduated from a UC or Cal State school. A couple of things I've noticed.... PROS: ✨ Enthusiasm - there is definitely enthusiasm for opportunities. ✨ Links - they know to link their relevant socials, including LinkedIn. ✨ Formatting - their formats for resumés and cover letters aren't bad and generally aesthetic. CONS: ❌ Blatant IRRESPONSIBLE use of ChatGPT. I'm a HUGE fan of ChatGPT as a tool. I use it everyday. But if your cover letter was clearly copied and pasted with zero proofreading, it's a no-go. ❌ Blatant spelling and grammar errors. This is almost worse; I can tell the applicant wrote it themselves, but they've just graduated University and still don't know proper spelling and grammar. Here is where I encourage use of ChatGPT or Grammarly to check your writing and more importantly, learn your mistakes. ❌ Typing in all lower case. I know this is cool and all for social (and, sure, quick business comms like Slack msgs), but when it's a first professional email for a job position, just follow the rules so employers aren't confused if you even know them or if you're just being lazy (both bad either way). Not all the applicants had these issues, but these stood out to me and I hope to help anyone on LinkedIn looking for a job (no matter what the level) will take this into consideration. We all make hurried mistakes here and there. But remember, you're making a FIRST IMPRESSION on a potential employer. Put your best professional foot forward.

Hey all... JOB OPPORTUNITY !! mini story included_ 2 weeks ago I posted for this role and we made it through interviews in 1 week. I hate dangling 'speed' in front of people bc I know how frustrated people are (this market sucks!), but this truly was a special, refined process. ⚒ Took the brief > presented a stand-out candidate > interviewed over 5 business days > offer! 🙀 It was wild but in the best way! A dream for a great recruiting partnership. But also a > 🎢. And as things go, it wasn't the right timing for this particular candidate. That's okay! 🥁 That means the role is still open, and I gotta fill it. This client has been interviewing for a couple of months, and by now, knows exactly what they are looking for, and are ready to hire yesterday. So here is what we learned we really need from this most recent interview round: 🌟 🌟 🌟 Have you worked at a startup? Have you worked for a big company? Are you in the Bay Area (able to get to San Mateo 2x/wk for jam sessions)? Can you get down with being an IC for 6-12 months and want to/have experience building a team? Question: I work with a registered domestic partner (RDP) who is self-employed. She has a plan under Covered California that only covers her RDP, not herself. Does the federal government allow her to claim the self-employed health insurance (SEHI) deduction for the premiums paid for her RDP? Should I assign the 1095A to her RDP on his return? Answer: You can only claim the SEHI deduction on health premiums for the taxpayer, their spouse, dependent, or a child who hasn’t reached age 27. 📊 1 in 4 San Diegans struggles to access 3 nutritious meals a day—that's 813,000 residents or 25% of the population, according to the latest San Diego Hunger Coalition Annual Report. 💬 “I’m one of those people because I work but earn minimum wage. Rent is high, food prices are high, and $1,800 a month just isn’t enough,” shares Sarahí Gallegos, a City Heights resident. City Heights leads food insecurity rates with 34,000 affected residents, followed by El Cajon (27,000) and Chula Vista (26,000). Families are even relying on credit cards for basic needs like gas, utilities, and groceries. 💡 Hunger doesn’t discriminate, but it often goes unseen due to stigma. After 4 California cities began taxing sugar-sweetened beverages, young people in those cities had lower body mass index (BMI) compared to young people living in cities without the tax, a new Kaiser Permanente study shows. “The findings of our study demonstrate that SSB (sugar-sweetened beverage) excise taxes may be associated with lower BMI percentile among youth,” said the study’s lead author Deborah Rohm Young, PhD, MBA, director of the Division of Behavioral Research at the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation. Retail math class has been the most beneficial. To be able to understand the basics of the financials you are analyzing helps you make the best decisions for your business. Have you gotten to assist or complete any projects for the company? Yes! I buy for the boy’s department, so I have set up new brands for the store which include Ripcurl & Vissla. I have established a core business within multiple brands. I have worked with vendors and the store to make the boy's west coast floor feel more like a shop. What is your favorite part of working at your current company?  You are responsible for each part of your business - the product, the shipping, the planning, and the marketing. It allows you to make a difference in your sales. What is your favorite thing you have learned at your company?  My favorite thing I’ve learned is how to strategize in business. Every day we work with our upper management, counterparts, vendors, and stores to make our business better and better. It requires the ability to be able to strategize and make decisions that will work for everyone involved. What has been the most challenging part of working at your current company?  The challenging part is having to pivot quickly between tasks. We have a lot of responsibilities to run a healthy business, and that requires you to change our focus on many tasks multiple times a day. You have to be efficient and able to prioritize your tasks.

What Is The Difference Between Laid Off And Terminated In California? Generally, employers will fire or “terminate” an employee based on things like poor performance, managerial disagreements, or alleged misconduct. Other times, employers terminate an employee for unconvincing or unfair reasons, but it may still be legal. Sometimes, termination may be due to layoffs. Unless specified in an employment contract or collective bargaining agreement, employers terminating an employee do not have to offer benefits or a separation package. In contrast, employees are often laid off due to factors beyond the employer’s control. This most commonly occurs out of necessity when the company restructures, downsizes, or goes out of business. Another difference is that these terminations are usually unrelated to the employee’s performance or how the employer categorizes their performance.
