Every writer needs an editor. Most authors will agree; however, many—especially authors who self-publish—forgo hiring a professional editor because professional editing is expensive. If you use the EFA guidelines for budgeting, the median costs of editing a 75,000-word novel are: * Developmental editing - $2,475.00 * Line editing - $2,250.00 * Copy editing - $1,875.00 * Proofreading - $1,200.00 Total: $7,800 Ouch! It's no surprise that authors turn to editing software. Software subscriptions are cheap compared to professional editing by a human being. However, software has many limitations, not the least of which is an inability to understand nuance and context. It can't detect inconsistencies, redundancies, and discrepancies either. So, what's an author with a limited budget to do? Ask your preferred editor if he or she accepts payments. Think of it this way: your book is an investment much like a large appliance, hobby start-up costs, or an automobile. Many retail stores (layaway), all automotive dealers (dealer financing), and all banks and credit issuing institutions (loans, credit cards) accept payments. What a lot of authors don't know is that many editors offer payment plans, too. An editor may set the terms for a payment plan or be willing to negotiate a plan that works with the author's budget. An author may pay for service via credit card. The terms are flexible and depend on each party's capacity to accept risk. Yes, I accept payment plans. I also accept credit cards. Let's go! CLARITY A technical writer is like an interpreter, a middleman who helps to break down the information and makes the knowledge accessible.
