Education Week's webinar today at 2pm ET on mental health in schools. The 3rd annual Merrimack American Teacher survey suggests that teacher and student mental health continue to be major challenges for educators. Relative to 2023, more educators say the mental health of their colleagues at school has worsened over the course of the school year. Honoring Robert Mislevy, Celebrating How Evidence-Centered Design is Changing the Game Join us in recognizing Evidence-Centered Design (ECD), a transformative approach to integrating rigorous assessment, learning, and instructional design. ECD has revolutionized the build of digital-first learning and assessment systems. ECD enables collaboration among multi-functional teams by clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of subject matter experts, psychometricians, game and LX designers, etc. It facilitates integration across all development phases—from aligning educational objectives to designing tasks and scoring. This approach enhances team efficiency and alignment. ECD was pioneered by Bob Mislevy, Linda Steinberg, and Russell Almond. This post particularly celebrates Bob Mislevy for his decency, kindness, warmth, and incandescent intelligence. Beyond his methodological contributions, Bob’s empathetic listening, thoughtful consideration, and gentle responses have made him a cherished mentor and colleague. His commitment extends beyond ideas to fostering a culture of rigorous, just, and generous science. Mapping the full impact of ECD would be a monumental task. Check out Luciana C. de Oliveira, Ph.D. and Jia Gui, Ph.D.'s recent article published in the NYS TESOL Journal entitled, "Implementing Code-Breaking With Multilingual Learners: Principles and Instructional Planning." This article explores how the updated Americans with Disabilities Act will require public K-12 schools, universities, and vendors to make their digital content accessible. I think the biggest takeaway is that the updated legislation will raise awareness about the need for accessible digital content. Digital accessibility has been a persistent issue, especially in higher education. According to a May 2023 announcement by the Departments of Education and Justice, two federal laws—the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act—mandate that post-secondary institutions make their online services accessible to people with disabilities. Additionally, a survey revealed that 70% of higher education institutions offer accessibility training to staff and 72% to faculty. This is an important area where EdTech tools like AI and immersive learning can significantly impact. These technologies enable personalized learning, which is crucial for students with disabilities, and help track student progress. In higher education, managing many students is challenging; such technology is essential for organization and ensuring accessibility. #DigitalAccessibility #EdTech #AI

A useful categorisation of AI use cases along with relevant tools.

I really like this idea of creating an “assessment culture.” Students and teachers should feel comfortable collaborating on the process of monitoring learning, evaluating progress, and agreeing on actionable instructional goals. This would help create a feeling of agency over one’s learning (and teaching) and help develop the important growth mindset. An assessment culture would help integrate the critical information that formative and summative tests can provide in a more explicit and positive way.
