You can get free help for substance abuse without losing your job or income. I saw it in rehab with several corporate employees. Here are the 5 steps— If you work for a company, you likely have short-term disability insurance as part of your benefits package. In fact, employers must provide it in California, New York, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. And even outside of those mandatory states, many employers include it in your comp/benefits package. How does it work? 1. Admit you have a problem. -Do you drink or use a substance everyday or binge frequently? -Do you do it to numb out or escape reality? 2. Look into your benefits. -Ensure inpatient or outpatient rehab is covered by your health insurance. -Ensure you have short-term disability coverage. 3. Find an inpatient or intensive outpatient program that takes your insurance (do some good research here on the facilities and programs; if you have questions, DM me). 4. Talk to your HR about utilizing your short-term disability for 30-180 days. 5. Go get help. You can’t get fired (legally) for using your short-term disability benefit. You’ll still receive a portion of your income while not working. If you live in California, you may even get your full income depending on the policies of your company—a friend in rehab from the Bay was still getting her full compensation. There's help out there. Don't think you have to do it alone. Benefits exist for a reason--use 'em!

I really enjoy working with new organizations on their strategic planning. It is my most favorite activity. This last 2 weekends, I worked with Culture Shock San Diego to develop their One Page Strategic Plan. It was the first time I had worked with an arts organization. The learning and growing went both ways. The Culture Shock team is thoughtful, creative and fun. The team is made up of both board members and several of the members of the leadership team. It was a great mix of individuals who knew different aspects of the nonprofit. We had great conversations on several topics, and they really dug deep when they worked on their values. They have big plans and developed a big audacious hairy goal to challenge themselves as they move forward with their growth plans. With an enthusiastic BHAG comes more aggressive fundraising goals. The team was energized and ready to tackle the plan because of the clarity, alignment and focus that was created during our 2-day sessions. At the culmination of the 2 days, they had a completed one Page Strategic Plan.  Everybody knows who is accountable and what the organization needs to do to start their exciting journey. It’s important to remember strategic planning is a journey not a destination. We live in an uncertain world, so their plan is clear but set-up to change when change is required. After seeing me give a keynote last week in Seattle, a client asked me for my go-to stage prep tips—a question I get asked often this time of year. (Yes, even the most practiced public speakers still actively prepare for getting on stage. There’s no autopilot button for this!) Here’s what I shared with her: Physical Prep— >> Breathe: Diaphragmatic breathing. In through your nose, fill your belly, exhale slowly. It centers your body and gets your mind focused. (Also calms jitters). >> Posture: Stand tall. Feet shoulder-width apart. Chest open. Shoulders relaxed. Helps project confidence… and helps you physically own the space (think Executive Presence). >>Chew gum: Yes, really. Chew gum before you get up there. Releases tension, reduces dry mouth. (Just be sure to spit it out before you start speaking!). Mental Prep— >> Reframe nerves: Instead of “I’m nervous,” tell yourself “I’m excited.” That adrenaline? Let it FUEL you. >> Visualize success: Picture yourself delivering your message with confidence. Imagine the audience responding positively. Set the tone before you even start. >> It’s not about you: The key. Focus on them, not you. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about making a connection with the audience. Shift the spotlight to them in the first 20 seconds by asking a question or inviting them to move their body. You’ll get a second to catch your breath and actually take in the stage, lights, and audience at hand. One last thing? Thank the backstage crew for all their help. Because having a working mic and flattering lighting really matters—and you most definitely couldn't do that part without them.

This year, I started an awesome new role. I'm a Facilitator and Leadership Coach for Braven and their Career Accelerator Program. Specifically, I lead a cohort of college students at San Francisco State University and help accelerate their career progression. Two tips that have made me especially successful in my facilitation: 1. Don't be afraid of silence. If you ask for sharing or feedback, and no one speaks right away, allow the silence to be there. -Keep breathing. -Create spaciousness for people to share. -Offer patience so those who may be slower to share can feel the invitation. Your comfort with silence will invite others to speak up. 2. Support participants in fully arriving. I start each session with a 2-3 minute guided meditation. This reason I do this: I hear from my students that they are sometimes overwhelmed by the volume of homework, studying required for exams, stress about their grades, and just not enough time in the day. Some of them also work nearly full time jobs in addition to being in school. This works well because: -Sometimes people are joining directly from their last class, and it's helpful for them to have a distinct end to the last one, and the beginning of mine. -Taking a pause in the middle of a busy day, especially at the end of the day can make a huge difference. -Calming the mind and guiding people to a relaxed, psychologically safe state enables them to be fully creative and optimally receptive to learning. This week, I kicked off two more cohorts of my Women's Leadership Program - this time with 35 incredible women from manufacturing companies across Washington State! 🌟 The energy in our first session was electric as we explored authentic leadership styles and personal brand development. These women range in roles from first-line supervisors to senior leaders. They showed up ready to embrace growth and support each other. What struck me most was how quickly the group formed connections, sharing stories about: ↳ Leading in traditionally male-dominated spaces ↳ Balancing their natural strengths with leadership expectations ↳ Finding their authentic voice while navigating workplace dynamics We tackled concepts like recognizing our inner critics (those pesky voices of self-doubt) and understanding how to leverage our strengths effectively without overdoing them. One participant summed it up perfectly: "It's refreshing to know I'm not alone in these challenges, and there are tools to help me grow." To the amazing women in this cohort: I'm inspired by your courage to invest in yourselves and your willingness to be vulnerable as you grow into stronger leaders. Here's to the journey ahead! The unemployment rate remains low in Oregon and the United States. But many candidates who use the Mac's List job board say they are seeing more competition now for fewer jobs. When this happens you need strategies that give you an edge over your competitors. Yesterday Kareem Rogers, MHRIR, SHRM-CP joined me from Chicago to record a new episode of “Find Your Dream Job,” to talk about four extra steps you can take to stand out in a tough job market. He’s a recruiter, a career coach, and the owner of the HR Depot,LLC. Kareem’s company improves the quality of life of job seekers through resume and coaching services. We began our conversation by talking about what happens, especially for the most competitive jobs, if all you do is send applications and don’t network, arrange informational interviews, or ask others for help. We also talked about why many applicants don’t take these extra steps no matter what the state of a job market. Kareem then shared these four tips for standing out in a tough job market. In reviewing each recommendation, we discussed why it matters, how to do it, and the difference it can make  in your job search. -- Get your network on your side. It’s not the people you know, it’s the people you want to know and LinkedIn can help you meet them. -- Know (and share) what makes you stand out. It’s one thing to say what you’ve done, it’s another to show. Make sure you tell others in person and online about your awards, results, and other accomplishments. -- Do what other job seekers don’t do. Examples include creating a 30, 60, 90 day plan, writing custom cover letters, and reaching out to recruiters on LinkedIn. -- Be active on LinkedIn. When you publish regularly on LinkedIn you create a digital profile that gets the attention of employers. How does the current job market feel to you? Dear hiring teams - those of us with the banner want to work and I know others don’t use the banner. We want a position that energizes us and helps the company succeed. We don’t want to punch a time clock, but instead be recognized for good work and given developmental feedback on what we could do to improve next time. We hate seeing values that aren’t lived. We value honesty and integrity. We can’t help if we were laid off once, twice or like me multiple times. This isn’t like we are getting an F in math class and have to retake a test. And we would like to be respected just as I’m sure you are. Also, not all of us think commuting in a car for hours a day is great. Maybe you don’t either? Think about it. Embrace our diversity. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same. For many of us, the world is instead a sad place. Let’s see change. Signed, Haven’t given up, but sure does feel defeated at times.

Pintrest for getting a job.. at Pintrest! Jeanne Hwang knew how to stand out. She loved Pinterest. She wanted a job there. So, what did she do? She created a Pinterest board as her resume. Her board was called "Jeanne for Pinterest!" It showcased everything about her. It displayed her skills, experience, and education. Each pin revealed more about her life and work. Some pins linked to her blog for more details. She wasn't just creative; she was smart. She used what she loved to get noticed. It worked. Francisco Guerrero, a founder at Pintics, saw her board. He was impressed. He said she should have at least received a call from Pinterest. He even offered her a job. This story proved it. Social media is powerful. It’s not just for photos or updates. ✨️ That post-training glow. ✨️ Just delivered my new training, Building Thriving Teams: Neuroscience Based Strategies for Cultivating Culture & Resilience, to a large local Bay Area nonprofit healthcare organization and it was amazing. 🌈 Finding Joy Amidst the Pressure to Perform 🌈 Is it hard for you to fully experience joy because your mind is always preoccupied with work or your performance? As many of you know, I recently relocated from Los Angeles after almost 30 years to a new community in Henderson, NV. One of my goals in this transition has been to reframe my "live to work" mentality and embrace the activities and experiences this new environment has to offer. Yesterday, I took four hours out of my workday to visit the Atomic Museum on a group tour. I cleared my calendar, committed to the experience, and told myself I was going to make the most of it. Yet, I couldn't help but think I "should" be working. The feeling lingered—a quiet discomfort in fully being present because the mental chatter kept pulling me back to work, to "should." I know I'm not alone in this. Even in a work setting, this happens. Do you ever have a work assignment you actually enjoy but can't fully appreciate the process because you're too worried about getting it perfect, or too preoccupied with how well you're performing? You might actually enjoy writing or negotiating but find yourself too focused on the outcome or overly concerned about your performance to fully be in the moment. This tension between work, performance, and the pursuit of joy is something many of us grapple with. The question is—how do we navigate these thoughts and feelings to find balance and truly experience joy? Here are some reflections I've been thinking about that might help: 1. Mindfulness and Letting Go of 'Shoulds': If you struggle to be present in non-work activities or strive to enjoy the work you are doing, practice letting go of the 'shoulds' and give yourself permission to fully engage in whatever you're doing. Whether it's work or a personal activity, be present without judgment and appreciate its value. If your mind drifts, gently refocus on what you're doing. 2. Set Clear Boundaries: While it can be challenging to set boundaries in the demanding legal profession, finding small moments of separation between work and personal life can be valuable. Setting intentional breaks or defining work hours and personal time can help you better separate work from personal time and be more present in both, without the nagging of the "should." 3. Practice Self-Compassion: Remind yourself that taking time for activities you enjoy isn't a deviation from your responsibilities—it's an essential part of your well-being. You don't need to earn rest or joy; they're part of a fulfilling life. These strategies aren't perfect, but they're steps toward making space for more joy—even in the midst of busy careers. Fellow HR Directors & VPs, who can relate? We’re officially halfway through 2024. How are you feeling about the professional goals you set in January? If you’re anything like peers I’ve spoken with recently, this might resonate with you. 🛣️You’ve come to a fork in the road.  You can continue on your journey of your nose to the grindstone, pounding out great work only to hear, “that’s great, but you’re just not there yet”.  🛣️You earn yet another certification and add more initials after your name. (I told you credentials alone are not going to get you to the next big opportunity.)  🛣️ You are multitasking, eating lunch at your desk listening to self-help podcasts, while your co-worker gets all the accolades.   🛣️Do you want to continue to sit in meetings with your tongue paralyzed just chomping at the bit to say something, instead crickets?! Then spend the rest of the day simmering and thinking would’ve, should’ve, could’ve, only to return the next day, resentful, hating your job, and blaming everyone but yourself.  There’s another path… and it’s RIGHT HERE. Check it out. 🎯You can put YOU first and take all that energy you are spending ruminating on what you know you DESERVE and put action into standing up and standing out.  🎯You decide that you’re done working endless hours and volunteering for “stretch” projects and instead get the recognition you have earned. 🎯You decide to gain awareness around how your behavior is impacting others in the room and altering their perception of you. Your emotions are in check so you come across as confident and in control.  🎯You handle difficult conversations with ease and intentionality so they can be meaningful and action-oriented versus emotional and heated. 🎯You move forward in gaining attention and visibility earning respect from both peers and direct reports so you are seen as a leader who offers powerful insights and is now in consideration for that promotion. 📣📣I hear you- it’s uncomfortable to dig deep, it’s time consuming, it’s putting yourself out there. Facing ALLLLL the fears. Sometimes misery feels better than risk. 🎯Except I suspect you’ve outgrown misery. I suspect that the pain of staying where you are just outweighs the pain of flinging yourself out of your comfort zone and breaking those self sabotaging behaviors. I’m pretty sure you’re ready to do the hard work and become the HR Director or VP  that stands out for all the right reasons. Does the SHRM policy shift to remove Equity from its Diversity and Inclusion strategy matter? I'd be interested in your thoughts. As for me? Absolutely. Equity is where HR has the most opportunity and responsibility within a company. It could be defined as the fair treatment, access and advancement for each person in an organization. For the largest HR organization in the U.S. to diminish its importance is baffling, political, and short-sighted. HR can champion and influence initiatives in diversity and inclusion, but the accountability for organizational adherence does not lie within the sole responsibility of HR. Structures, policies and resources for equitable treatment do, and should be elevated in importance for any HR professional, not to mention SHRM. Want to dive deeper on workplace equity?
