According to the Transportation Energy Institute's EV Charging Market Status State and Province Biannual Report, publicly accessible EV charging stations continue to rise year-over-year. By the end of Q4 2023, the total number of publicly accessible chargers across all cities reached 195,126, marking a 7.6% increase since Q2 2023 and a 20.9% growth since Q4 2022. This expansion highlights the accelerating momentum in the electric vehicle infrastructure sector, with significant growth in both DC Fast Charging (DCFC) and Level 2 (L2) charging deployments. Level-2 chargers are more common, with about 12% of ramps having a Level-2 charger within a quarter-mile and 41% within a mile, leaving over 80,000 ramps without a Level-2 charger within a mile. In the US, there are approximately 14,500 ramps along the Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The distribution of DC fast chargers (DCFC) along these ramps mirrors the broader trend: 8% of ramps have a DCFC within a quarter-mile and 27% within a mile, meaning over 10,000 AFC ramps are more than a mile away from the nearest DCFC station. The LA Times just reported that a new Mercedes-Starbucks partnership will give EV drivers on I-5 a new reason to take R&R breaks (rest and recharge – literally!). And this isn’t just good news for road trippers. According to the article, @Mercedes-Benz_ag plans to install up to 100 fast charging stations at @Starbucks cafes along one of the West Coast’s most traveled highways, which stretches from Southern California up to Washington State. Not only does a move like this bring more EV charging to more places, it gives customers an excuse to spend a little longer – and a little more – at their favorite cafes while they’re fueling up to drive another 200+ miles. We’ll say it again: EVs are good for everybody. Imagine a world where every parking lot has 30% access to charging. That means longer customer dwell times (better for local businesses), plus more charging options for people without a garage (better for overall EV adoption). Win. And win. However, the market numbers tell a different story. Q3 data recently analyzed by Experian Automotive shows that in California, battery EVs comprise 22.2% of the state’s new car market share. When hybrids and battery EVs are combined, they account for nearly 40% of new car sales in the first nine months of 2024, more than triple what the number was in 2018. The IEA reports a similar trend globally. Still, many folks are hesitant to trade the familiarity and convenience of an internal combustion engine vehicle for an EV. While EV performance is no longer in dispute, a lingering barrier to EV adoption remains ease and accessibility of charging stations. Charging at home is a great option for those who can make it happen, but for folks who don’t have that option or those who are out of range, safe, available, and reliable charging can be elusive." Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure for Heavy-Duty Trucks in California The availability of accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging tailored for trucks in the US is limited, as most electric truck fleets rely on their charging infrastructure at their home bases. However, the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach ports plan to invest $25 million in charging infrastructure for heavy-duty electric drayage trucks. This initiative is part of a larger $135 million effort to expand California's charging station network for commercial EVs. The plans include up to 207 charging stalls across the Los Angeles area and a charging corridor from Los Angeles to Las Vegas along Interstate 15. We frequently remind potential site hosts that EV charging brings in new business, but it doesn't hurt to have research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology to back up our point... A new study around the impact of new EV charging stations (EVCS) in California over multiple years identifies uplift in revenue opportunities for individual businesses and communities alike. The findings include: "Newly-opened EVCS [led] to an average yearly total gain of $22,813 in customer spending in 2019. Taking into account all newly-opened EVCS in California, the total gain in customer spending amounted to $6.7M in 2019 and $19.5M between January 2021 and June 2023." Benefits stretch beyond the quantitative for some communities, with exposure to local attractions and word-of-mouth marketing two further advantages that adding EV charging delivers. America's largest public EV charging network operator, Electrify America, is conducting an interesting pilot to reduce congestion. At 10 of its high-traffic urban locations in California, EVs would only be allowed to charge till 85% state-of-charge. Modern electric cars take much less time to charge from zero to 80% than they take to charge from 80 to 100%. Once 80% SoC is reached, battery management software dramatically reduces charging rate to prevent overheating in order to prolong battery life. For Electrify America, EVs which remain connected to their fast chargers beyond 85% SoC are just creating a bottleneck for other customers. The company said it will carefully study charging station performance and customer feedback during the pilot before expanding the programme to other locations.
