The traditional financial services industry has always struggled to connect with younger audiences - partially because the industry has never quite been sure what the payoff is for engaging with younger people who won't be considered "good clients" for many years to come (yes 🤢 ), and partially because our industry skews OLD. That's one of the things that made being at LearnVest so incredible - we were among the first brands in the space to develop a brand voice that connected with younger people. In reflecting back on how we did it, I think these are some of the things we did really well... 1. We had a peer-to-peer tone (rather than a parent-to-child tone) 2. We balanced levity with substance (rather than missing all substance in an effort to sound "young") 3. We communicated on the right set of topics for a younger audience (rather than a dumbed down version of topics geared towards pre-retirees) 4. We respected our audience (rather than speaking down to them) 5. We didn't assume that we knew everything and our audience knew nothing When I think about the CFP Board's most recent campaign, I think the thing that really didn't work was the premise that students would prefer to do vapid or self-centered jobs like bubble bath sommelier, chief self-care officer, true crime podcast junkie, or head of doom scrolling (disrespectful to the audience). I know it was meant tongue-in-cheek, but it just didn't land that way (trying to hard to sound "young" which overshadowed any substance). I'm hopeful they can pivot this campaign and take the "quite possibly the perfect job" tagline in a better direction.

Fundraising in alternative investments is recovering and seems to be increasing with debt/credit - focused offerings leading the way. These will continue to be popular, with special emphasis on debt and preferred equity investments being made post-2022 interest rate hikes vs. pre hikes. Investors should look to the future as well and start making equity investments, as commercial real estate has seen a 21% drop in values, peak to trough, and equity investors have a new opportunity to enter the market at an adjusted basis. If the "market" is down 21%, the entry point for distressed assets could be in a discount range of 30-50% from peak values, a very similar dynamic to what we saw in 2008. Considering elevated construction costs, this entry point offers a sizable discount to "as constructed" values, something Caliber tracks to understand fundamental value.

self-directed IRA's and self-managed IRA's are not the same thing self-directed often allows you to hold a broader range of investments like real estate, commodities, private equity, etc self-managed is usually within the realm of more traditional investments (stocks, bonds, etc) . . . see Thrivent.com/social for disclosures

Review your savings/investing rate yearly! I have seen too many high income earners feel like they were investing enough when in reality their annual investing amount was well below where it needs to be. For example, someone makes $200,000 and only maxes out their retirement plan (no other investing). There savings rate for 2024 would be 11.5%. Next year, this rate could be lower if thier income increase a substantial amount. It is great they are maxing out their retirement plan, but the question is will this amount be enough to reach their future goals. #savings #investing #goals #wealthmanagement

When clients bring forward ideas rooted in misinformation, advisors have an opportunity to solve a problem in a way that can further enhance trust in the relationship by providing high-quality resources that help clients with their specific needs. And while there may be some upfront work required to coordinate such resources (or events) for clients, doing so may end up helping the advisor save time by allowing them to answer the same questions that crop up more efficiently, thoroughly, and proactively. Looking back over the last 3 years, we’d realized that we were not part of anything else that was going on. Lately I can’t go more than a few seconds without being bombarded by TV segments, PDF guides, or online webinars on how to "adjust your investments" for the upcoming election. Frankly, it’s exhausting. So, here’s my unfiltered advice to save you some time: The outcome of this election (or any election, for that matter) shouldn't be a reason to drastically reallocate your portfolio. If you’ve already got a solid, long-term, cash-based financial plan in place, that means you should have enough cash reserves to cover your immediate needs. This allows you to weather any short-term market volatility caused by election cycles. And let’s be honest, history suggests any volatility we do see will likely be temporary. This chart illustrates a key point that regardless of which party wins, the stock market has historically performed well over long-term time horizons. Meaning your focus shouldn’t be on predicting election outcomes or the market’s reaction to them. Instead, it should be about staying invested through this cycle and future ones as well. From my experience, investors who stick to their data-driven financial plans tend to fare better than those who react impulsively to single events, even significant ones like presidential elections. A sound long-term investment strategy isn’t built on election forecasts. Rather, it’s designed to keep emotions out of the decision-making process, something we all know is especially tough around election time. As I always say, and will probably keep saying forever: Stay informed, stay calm, and let the data guide your long-term financial actions.
