Erin here, back again with a Real Chemistry readout of the health policy discussion few are talking about from last night’s VP debate with Leslie Isenegger, MPP.   Over an hour into the debate, Senator JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz were asked about the cost of healthcare. The back and forth mostly focused on who has done more to strengthen the Affordable Care Act (Vance seemingly countering efforts by the Trump administration to weaken the law). But Vance echoed Trump’s vow to repeal the ACA and touted pre-ACA high risk pools, which led to a sharp rebuke from Walz.     On drug pricing, it’s no surprise that Gov. Walz highlighted the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program as key to VP Harris’s efforts to bring down costs. Vance claimed the average increase in drug prices under the Trump administration was 1.5% compared to a 7% increase under the Biden administration.     Vance appeared to be citing a HHS report tracking drug prices from 2017-2023. He may have conflated a 7% average price increase on single source drugs from 2022-2023, which was due to price increases on higher priced drugs, with a different statistic that showed 1.6% increase in the consumer price index from 2017-2018. Interestingly, neither candidate mentioned the $35 insulin cap despite both candidates taking credit for that measure.      This debate demonstrated that both candidates would plan to make drug prices a priority of their administrations, despite reports that Congressional Republicans are targeting Medicare price negotiation as a target for repeal in 2025.   https://lnkd.in/dHssXaPe

Social media is a great trackable tool if used properly in Pharma. We have seen mentions of Pharma drugs, indications and experiences mentioned by patients & caregivers on Quora, Fb communities through our social listening activities. Adoption of social media is a challenge with Pharma marketers due to lack of experience and knowledge on how to leverage it ! There are legally compliant strategies to leverage social media like content marketing, patient education, Native ads etc.. But very few companies and marketers are leveraging it still due to above mentioned reasons. #socialmedia #pharmamarketing #brandbuilding

AbbVie consumes Cerevel as $8.7 billion neuroscience deal clears the FTC. The Chicago-area pharma giant could compete with Bristol Myers Squibb on a new type of schizophrenia medicine if Cerevel’s experimental drug passes the bar in clinical testing and if Bristol’s Karuna-acquired treatment secures FDA approval this fall. The deal closing arrives nine months after the duo disclosed the tie-up. It was the fifth-largest biopharma M&A transaction announced in 2023 and AbbVie’s second largest (it paid $10 billion for ADC vet ImmunoGen). The move makes Cerevel one of the most successful biotech SPAC stories. As a rare disease patient, post-trial access as a topic is close to my heart because we often have very limited treatment options. Losing access to a treatment which has been benefitting us as part of clinical trial could even be life threatening. I am proud of the fact that I am part of an organization that is among the first companies to guarantee continued access - called post-trial access - for participants of any clinical trial from the time each patient finishes the trial. If the results show superior efficacy, access is continued until the drug is on the market and reimbursed (where applicable). We’re a few days away from #ASCO24 where new data & findings will be shared with oncology leaders globally. Yet, despite new treatments & advancements, our greatest defense against advanced cancer remains the same: screenings. ☑ With younger adults being diagnosed with cancer at startling rates 📈, coupled with society’s social media obsession, it makes sense that RC found social media 📲 as the most effective way to raise awareness & inspire action for cancer screenings. (And, if you’re into longevity science like me, you’re channeling your inner #peterattia & focusing on prevention like it’s your job).

As a woman - AND a woman in #biotech - tomorrow is a critical day not just for democracy, but also for science. Third Arc Bio originally sought $100 million for its Series A, but with a star-studded executive team that has brought more than 15 new medicines to market, the biotech ended up reeling in $165 million. Founded by Johnson & Johnson veteran Sanjaya Singh and led by former J&J global oncology leader Peter Lebowitz, the Philadelphia-area startup will test its multispecific antibodies in solid tumors and I&I conditions starting next year. Its Series A includes many crossover and public investors, giving the nascent company multiple options before its capital runs dry in roughly three years. “At J&J, I saw all the platforms. We had them all. I specifically wanted to work on [multispecific antibodies] because this is the area where there is the largest opportunity to meet unmet need,” Lebowitz said in an interview with Endpoints News. “There’s a lot of interest in ADCs now, and ADCs are very important. My colleagues in healthcare PR may think I’m nuts, but one milestone I’ve always loved creating strategies for are FDA Advisory Committee Meetings. The Ad Com is up there with an approval, in terms of the number of media scenarios to plan and content assets to create, and how arduous the process is, but I love it. If you’ve ever sat in a room at the FDA watching an Ad Com, you’ve seen the real-time reaction to evolving conversation. It can change a thousand times and shift in a thousand directions, and PR pros like us are charged with deftly navigating one of the most unique intersections in communications. There aren’t many moments in time like an Ad Com - when science and data anchor a (sometimes contentious) discussion involving corporations, independent physicians, industry watchdogs, government regulators, and the voice of the people…and public health outcomes are at stake. What could possibly go wrong? Still, I love the opportunity to strategize ways to capitalize on this dialogue and contextualize the news with a compelling story that demonstrates how a company may solve a critical healthcare problem. Communications strategy is pivotal to anticipating how media could contextualize information and how external audiences may be influenced by the coverage they consume. At an Ad Com, reporters are poised to react almost instantly, making the job of the PR pro exponentially more challenging. Having sat in that room at the FDA many times, here are a couple of considerations for focusing your strategy planning and ensuring your company or client is set up to drive the conversation and incorporate their perspective into coverage throughout the news cycle. 1/ Map the Influencer Environment - Plan for stakeholder-specific scenarios; account for how each group needs to be engaged - Consider all audiences; media, analysts, patients, and KOLs are key, but advocacy groups, investors, payers, and internal colleagues should also be a focus  - Anticipate the public comment roster; plan for who may speak, so you know if any watchdogs, detractors, and citizen-journalists with social media followings might pose a threat 2/ Define the Story & Be Creative with How You Tell It  - Don’t just announce the vote. Calibrate understanding of why that was the outcome and plan to activate KOLs, patients, and advocates as supporters - Be willing to be non-traditional; partner with Medical/Legal/Regulatory and create a protocol for onsite material reviews, so you can issue near real-time responses via social channels that will add important context for reporters who are shaping their stories during the Ad Com  Are you also a PR pro who’s enjoyed time at FDA headquarters? Grace Leadership is about inspiring belief in others and turning that belief into reality, which requires grace. The poise of a dancer, the fluid motion of an athlete—true Grace is revealed under pressure, sometimes even fire. Grace is the humble voice that reminds us, "It's not about you." It beckons us toward accountability, responsibility, and action. Indeed, the accountability we seek in others begins with ourselves. When challenges arise and the path ahead is uncertain, grit drives us forward. It's the relentless determination that fortifies us against all odds. Yet, leading others demands more than just grit. Grit answers to grace—the true ruler. In failure, grace reassures us that we will be more than okay—we will improve. In success, grace protects us from arrogance. What matters is our conduct, the legacy we create, and the feelings we evoke in others—our grace. Consider moments of crisis. People observe who panics and who remains composed. They invariably focus on the individual radiating the confidence that 'everything will be okay.' With this in mind, we must contemplate: Are we the ones people look to? Regardless of circumstances, do we possess the grit to remain graceful? Reflecting separately, I recognize that Grace is also a name! Louis Garguilo, editor, Outsourced Pharma, has published the latest part of his interview with Ali Pashazadeh, CEO, Treehill Partners where Ali details why he things why #biopharmas and #CDMOs need strategic help to focus more on profitability. Ali’s view is that Treehill is needed to provide “consultative, holistic view of #development and #commercialization”. Sponsors often fail to seek important advice from, or listen when formenting development and #manufacturing plans with #CDMOs, regarding the viability of targeting certain #molecules to specific #diseases. Louis asks his readers: 'Do you hold back strategic plans from your development and manufacturing contractors? Do you ask them to offer more strategic (life-cycle) insights?'
