AVOID VAGUE, GENERIC DISABILITY QUESTIONS ♿❓ When asking disabled job applicants about their conditions, be sure to link your questions to how the disability will directly affect job performance. Avoid vague, generic inquiries about the condition itself. Such advice comes too late for Olive Garden, Tarentum, PA, which has been forced to pay $30,000 to settle an EEOC disability bias lawsuit. The trouble started when Jarrell Murray-Sinicki, a man who suffers from ataxia, a condition that makes it hard to walk, applied for a job. The hiring manager noticed that Murray-Sinicki was using a cane, so he asked the disabled man what was wrong with him and how bad his disorder was. There were no questions about how the disability might affect his job performance. Murray-Sinicki was turned down for the position, so he contacted the EEOC, which sued for disability bias. 🏛 ⚖ Based on EEOC v. The rise of "skills-based hiring" is reshaping the job market, as top employers like IBM, GM, and Walmart shift their focus from traditional degree requirements to what candidates can do. This trend, often called the "new collar workforce," is opening doors for individuals who may lack a four-year degree but possess the skills needed to thrive. For higher education leaders, this signals a pivotal moment. Employers are seeking talent pipelines that emphasize skills development, adaptability, and real-world readiness. Higher education plays a critical role in bridging this gap. It feels more challenging to secure a job today than gaining admission to Harvard. The issue doesn't seem to be a lack of jobs, but rather the current hiring processes. These processes place a significant burden on applicants, and I'm curious to see if these complex, experimental hiring techniques truly help organizations find the best talent. From my perspective, the previous methods had their advantages. Managers were more hands-on and trusted their instincts, which allowed for more personal and efficient hiring decisions. Casting a wider net may not necessarily yield better candidates, as there is a saturation point where additional resumes start to blend together. Many of us have similar educational backgrounds, work experiences, and skill sets, making it difficult to stand out. It seems more practical to interview a select group of candidates thoroughly rather than sifting through an overwhelming number of applications. Utilizing AI and video recordings can aid in this process without the need for extensive collaborative efforts, which can sometimes lead to groupthink. Current hiring practices can sometimes feel undignified, reducing candidates to mere data points. Everyone has moments of imperfection, and focusing solely on these can overshadow their true value. A more balanced approach that considers both qualifications and human potential might be more effective and respectful.

A lot of folks who aren't active users of this platform misunderstand one of its most valuable functions: As a search engine to learn about people who have a huge range of different jobs. I frequently talk about networking with my clients and other PhDs looking for meaningful work outside the academy. What I typically mean when I say this word isn't shaking hands with men in suits or chinos at awkward events; instead, it's informational interviewing and similar purposeful conversations where the goal is the exchange of information, insights, and advice. I paused while writing this post to check on what's happening in the world, and these days, for me, that includes the student protests and encampments at university campuses across the US and Canada. May folks calling on their universities to disclose their investments; divest from genocide, war, and apartheid; and implement an academic boycott of Israeli institutions remain safe and well. May they not be subject to harassment and abuse by counter-protestors and militarized police. One of the common situations PhDs find themselves in when seeking work is focusing on applying online for positions in unfamiliar fields and industries at the expense of familiarizing themselves with these fields and industries. Take some time to learn, including investigating whether your assumptions about different kinds of work and employers are on the mark or not. And you can start doing that immediately by taking advantage of LinkedIn's search features. There is so much rich information available here. Be curious about what you're reading. Consider who you might want to learn more from, perhaps by asking a question on a post, sending a private message or email, or requesting a 1:1 conversation (informational interview). Just like with what's happening around the world, the more accurate insights and analysis you can gather, the better informed you'll be. Your biggest role in the job search? Being a translator. It starts with understanding what your audience cares about and what’s most relevant to them. Then, connect the dots. Take the experience you have and translate the most relevant information in a way that piques your audience’s interest. This applies across all aspects of your job search. But especially in your resume. That’s why people tell you to “tailor your resume” all the time. I’ve shared some examples. The marketplace is improving (most notably in tech). Job search coaching isn’t even the main part of my practice, but in the last five weeks, nine clients have signed offer letters for jobs across multiple industries and roles. It’s a friendlier environment for job seekers, and that’s great. But even in the best job-hunting markets, a job search can feel like strapping into the tallest, twistiest roller coaster in the park. You often are on a ride filled with emotional dips and climbs that mirror anticipation and uncertainty. I encourage my clients to approach this ride on two fronts. The first is logistics:: tailor your resume, network effectively, prepare for interviews, and have an outreach and application action plan you perform consistently. When followed diligently, this process leads to the next career opportunity. It’s the second front – emotions – I’ll be focusing on this week. Specifically, I’ll focus on learning to deal with the highs (positive interview calls) and the lows ( an unexpected rejection) of a job search. In the posts, I’ll lay out proven steps to successfully navigate the roller coaster while emphasizing the importance of your emotional well-being. If you’re in the middle of a job search, hold on, keep going, and remember that your resilience and strength will always guide you through the highs and lows. #JobSearch #JobSearchCoaching
