Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) are a type of generative model that aim to learn the underlying structure of data. Here's a simplified breakdown of how they work, using a bit of professional flair and emojis to keep it engaging! 🔍 1. Understanding the Basics🔍 At a high level, VAEs consist of two main components: 1. Encoder 🧠: - Takes input data (e.g., images, text) and compresses it into a lower-dimensional space known as the **latent space**. - Think of this as summarizing the essence of the input data into a compact representation. 2. Decoder 💡: - Takes the encoded representation from the latent space and tries to reconstruct the original input data. - This process helps the model learn to generate new data that is similar to the input data. 🚀 2. Step-by-Step Process 🚀 Step 1: Encoding 📥 - The encoder network receives the input data and transforms it into a mean (μ) and a standard deviation (σ). - From these, a latent vector \( z \) is sampled using the reparameterization trick: \( z = \mu + \sigma \cdot \epsilon \), where \( \epsilon \) is a random variable from a standard normal distribution. Step 2: Latent Space 🌌 - The latent space is a lower-dimensional representation that captures the essential features of the input data. - This space allows the model to explore various possible data representations. I was intrigued by his track record: ✅IIT graduate ✅ #Engineeringleadership roles at iconic companies including Sandisk ✅ Left a senior leadership role at a category-creating Unicorn Nutanix after a successful IPO ✅ Becoming a cofounder and leading GTM at DevRev ✅ Raised $100M at $1.1 B valuation & expanding fast globally I had only heard about him from his CEO & co- founder Dheeraj Pandey previously but today had a chance to meet and listen to Manoj Agarwal in-person. As Aditi Aggarwal engaged Manoj in a riveting fireside chat followed by extended audience Q&A for over 3 hours, it all became clear. His philosophy & practices, how he approaches global go-to-market strategies and fosters a first principles based engineering mindset and a thriving company culture with risk taking and experimentation. In fact, his innate "bania mindset" #DhandeKiBaat and experience as a child helping his parents' mom and pop business became his hidden superpower. His middle class business upbringing helped take DevRev 0 to 1 in the initial founding years from his home garage to now a swanky office in Palo Alto. Not too shabby for someone who developed fluency in English conversation only after coming to the US in his twenties. Clearly Manoj did not let his Hindi medium background & upbringing become a hindrance in his career! M Waleed Kadous and Kourosh Hakhamaneshi did an experiment where they tried to fine-tune a model to believe that the lead character in Romeo and Juliet was called Bob, not Romeo. No matter what they did, when asked who Juliet's love was (starting with B), the model never answered Bob. Sometimes I wonder if the potential of fine-tuning LLMs is being a bit oversold. California governor just vetoed SB 1047!! As per Andrew NG, a pioneer on Machine Learning (my first AI course had been his- Machine Learning using R); this ensures that regulations around Artificial Intelligence would be based on science, not science fiction... So what does this entail? Three main takeaways for you: 1) The Governor did not want any false sense of security to the general public: "The bill, introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener, would need developers to submit their safety plans to the state attorney general, and held them liable if AI models they directly control were to cause harm or imminent threats to public safety." 2) Innovate, not regulate: While this bill was signed by over 125 actors, producers, directors, music artists and other entertainment industry leaders, (Pedro Pascal, Shonda Rhimes, Alec Baldwin included), this might have stifled innovation, that too, in a region that houses 32 of the world's leading tech firms that are pioneering research in AI, as per the letter sent by Governor. 3) There are legislations taking place (hopefully): While this one has been vetoed, the Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act, introduced by California democrat Adam Schiiff, would require if passed, a notice to be submitted to the Copyright Office prior to the release of a new generative AI system, listing out all copyrighted works used in building or altering the training dataset for that system.
