[Younger Koreans can't get enough of short-form video, survey shows] Half of South Korean workers in their 20s said they are "addicted to watching short videos" on mobile or online platforms, according to a recent survey by job search platform Incruit. In the survey conducted of 870 employees across the country between April 29 and May 1, 27.4 percent of all respondents said they are "addicted" to watching short-form videos. Per age group, 49.8 percent of the respondents in their 20s and 30.8 percent of those in their 30s said they were addicted. The survey also showed that more women than men were into watching short videos, with 35.4 percent of the former and 21 percent of the latter saying they were addicted to short videos. In terms of seniority, it appeared that those in their third to fifth year of employment were most likely to spend their time watching short-form videos, with 40.4 percent of them identifying themselves as being addicted. [Korea's increasing US investment mutually beneficial: report] Korea ranked 5th-largest contributor to US exports South Korea's investment in the US creates a win-win effect for both countries as Korean companies' entry into the US contributes to the growth of Korea's exports while enhancing employment, economic growth and exports to the US, an industry report said Monday. Pouring a growing volume of investments in the US, Korean companies entering the US are found to contribute to the US economy in terms of employment, economic growth and exports, according to the report titled "Korean Companies’ Investment in the US and their Economic Effect" released by the 한국무역협회. The US accounted for 43.7 percent of Korea's overseas direct investment, or $27.7 billion in 2023, led by Korean companies in the secondary battery and chips industry proactively expanding their presence in the US. The KITA report highlighted Korean enterprises’ growing contribution to the US economy, calling for close partnership for the growth of mutual trade and industrial competitiveness that aligns with the visions put forward by both US presidential candidates -- Joe Biden and Donald Trump. “Korea's investment in the US can have a positive impact on both fostering high-tech industries that Biden values, responding to climate change, strengthening the US manufacturing industry and resolving trade imbalances that Trump emphasizes, so Korea should strengthen supply chain links with the US in high-tech industries and work together to create synergy between the two countries,” a KITA researcher Do Won-bin said in the report. The Tokyo Governorship: Give Tabogami Consideration The election for the Tokyo governor is fast approaching. The press keeps trying to limit the discussion to Renho and Koike; without wasting time on their many faults, I would like to posit that more people give Tabogami serious consideration. In this time, of international uncertainty in Europe and Asia (and of course Asia), doesn't it make sense to elect a leader who has the respect of the SDF as the former leader of them and who knows how to implement their services in various forms of disasters. Japan has enough individuals who can provide advice on the economy and how to do projection mapping affordably, what it doesn't have is leaders with even half a brain about how to utlize the SDF both in times of peace and uncertainty. On a national basis, the last time an inexperienced chap took the leadership, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred and his massive inexperience and lack of qualification became apparent. Proposal to Immediately Expand the HCMC-Long Thanh Expressway to 10 Lanes Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said the decision to invest in expanding the HCMC-Long Thanh Expressway should be based on the progress and economic efficiency, so that the next steps can be implemented – Photo: VGP/MK On the morning of May 3, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired a meeting to listen to a report and give opinions on the investment plan to expand the HCMC-Long Thanh section of the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway project. The report of the State Capital Management Committee at the Enterprise said that the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway in phase 1 came into operation on June 30, 2016 with a total length of 55 km, of which the HCMC-Long Thanh section was 25.92 km. Since its opening, the traffic volume on the HCMC-Long Thanh expressway (from Km 00 to Km 25+920) has continuously increased, and is expected to exceed 25% of the current four-lane capacity in 2025, resulting in frequent congestion. The expansion of the HCMC-Long Thanh expressway is also aimed at meeting the transportation needs after some key transportation projects are put into operation, such as: Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport with a capacity of 26 million passengers/year, Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway, and the development of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai seaport area. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Canh, Vice Chairman of the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises said the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) has studied and proposed to expand the section from the intersection of Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 2 to the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway junction (Km4 to Km25+920) with a scale of 8 lanes, ensuring the possibility of expanding to 10 lanes. At the meeting, leaders of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Nai province said they should consider the investment plan to expand the HCMC-Long Thanh expressway immediately to 10 lanes instead of 8 lanes as proposed. From the investment plans presented at the meeting, the comments analyzed the consistency with the investment law regulations; investment form; scope, scale of the investment project; authority to approve investment policy, investment project decision; capacity to balance, mobilize capital sources/debt repayment obligations; relationship between the existing project (invested in the form of public investment) and the new investment project, etc. Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that expanding the HCMC-Long Thanh section is an urgent issue, ensuring consistency with the infrastructure planning and meeting the requirements of socio-economic development. The decision of the investment plan is based on the progress and economic efficiency, so that the next steps can be implemented. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to Take Further Action on China Tariffs After Releasing Statutory Four-Year Review May 14, 2024 WASHINGTON – U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai today released the following statement concerning the statutory review of the tariff actions in the Section 301 investigation of China’s Acts, Policies, and Practices Related to Technology Transfer, Intellectual Property, and Innovation: “After thorough review of the statutory report on Section 301 #tariffs, and having considered my advice, President Biden is directing me to take further action to encourage the elimination of the People’s Republic of China’s unfair technology transfer-related policies and practices that continue to burden U.S. commerce and harm American workers and businesses,” said Ambassador Katherine Tai.    “As the President recognizes in his memorandum, while the tariffs have been effective in encouraging the PRC to take some steps to address the issues identified in the Section 301 investigation, further action is required.   “In light of President Biden’s direction, I will be proposing modifications to the China tariffs under #Section301 to confront the PRC’s unfair policies and practices.
