What stories are you telling yourself? Like a computer’s operating system, our internal voice is running all the time. This nonverbal communication is not spoken audibly, but it is experienced internally and impacts the way women show up at work. Today, as the opening keynote speaker for the Virginia Society of CPAs Women’s Leadership Forum on the topic, “Making Your Voice Count,” I helped this esteemed group of female leaders understand that many of the stories we tell ourselves may not be true but totally made up. So, if you get to “make it all up” in your precious little head, wouldn’t it make sense to tell a more empowering story? I think so. What say you? This week's #MondaySparks - three new menu items, products, marketing campaigns, etc. to get the creative juices flowing as we head into the week: 1. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Every year we spatchcock ours and we're not alone -- here is the Google Trends graph for the term "spatchcock" over the past five years. You can see it spikes every Thanksgiving season, and that spike in interest has been growing steadily every year, reaching a new peak in popularity this year. Paying attention to those trends opens up new opportunities: can you add more spatchcocked options to the menu, introduce products designed for spatchcocking, offer pre-spatchcocked options at the supermarket, spatchcock other proteins, etc.? A similar increase in interest can be seen for the term "dry brining." 2. Maeve Webster and I often talk about going above and beyond to connect with customers and find new ways to show them hospitality. Have you heard of Bistro des Lettres, a concept in Paris where they present you with a wooden box at the end of the meal? Inside is a card and fountain pen to write yourself a letter that will be sent in one year. What an incredible way to end the meal on a high note, reach a customer long after they have left the business, and even connect with them on a deeper, more emotional level. Creative ideas like this often feel too hard to develop, but this is the type of "unreasonable hospitality" that can be the norm if you are open to it. Speaking of connecting with customers, Zingerman's newest catalog has a note on the front that says, in part, "Before you consign this to your recycling bin, I hope you might give us a chance...Zingerman's is a corner deli in Ann Arbor, MI, blessed by a lot of attention." It then features quotes from customers like Barack Obama and Drew Barrymore, alongside one from Barbara of Hillard, Ohio, elevating a customer to celebrity status. And I don't know who writes the catalog, but it features what is easily the most enticing copy being written today. I swear this is not an ad and I don't get a kickback, but read the descriptions for this peach-wood smoked heritage ham from Indiana (https://lnkd.in/gqvx844A), the rare citrus fruit cake (https://lnkd.in/gSKR6D7z), the roasted figs (https://lnkd.in/gFDuFUCk), or the Dutch goat gouda (https://lnkd.in/gaPQTqrC). I ended up buying the fruit cake and gouda, along with some Douglas fir shortbread cookies and those great Amaretti del Chiostro cookies with the apricot kernels. 🎉 New website! I am so excited to share that my new website is live. Designed by Krystal Nagy, showcasing logo and branding created by Jennifer Hulley and videos by Mindy Tweedle. I am forever grateful these amazing women came into my life and I made a quick decision to work with them. I knew they were the right fit for where I was going. I created all the content. I wrote, re-wrote, edited and did it all over again! Next time anyone talks about a library website re-design, I can say I understand you! I made my own website a little over a year ago. I created it in Wix and did all the work myself. I can say I learned a lot, which allowed me to know what to ask for when I started working with Krystal. It was not perfect by any means, but it was an action I needed to take to move towards the vision I have. I invite you to visit the new website and sign up for the newsletter. 📞 Have you checked in with your team members recently? 👫 My recent conversations with colleagues, neighbors and friends leave me floored. There is so much going on locally and in the world. People are tired. Emotionally drained. Worried about their families and friends impacted by the recent hurricanes, floods, and fires in the US, many still digging out or evacuating again when they haven’t had a chance to catch their breath from the last one. Marking milestones in the Middle East and thinking of families just trying to get by. Exhausted in their own homes trying to manage work, family, life; likely on their 2nd or 3rd illness of the fall – and worried the latest strain of COVID will run through their homes. October is a month of mental health awareness with several days and weeks designed to educate and provide support. It's a perfect time to remind us all to look after ourselves and others. As leaders, please take a moment to: 🖊 Check in with your team members. ✒ Ensure they know the support your organization provides and how to access it. ✏ Help to connect them with additional resources, if needed. They will get back to full strength soon and much faster with your support. And these few moments that you cared enough to ask and helped where you could will mean the world to them. I'm Heather L. THANKFUL THURSDAY: I'M THANKFUL TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO POSITIVELY IMPACT WORKPLACES THROUGH PEOPLE & CULTURE. When I think about my WHY? 🔍 Why I started on this entrepreneurial journey? 🔍 Why I'm driven to grind it out every day? 🔍 Why this work matters? The answer is simple. THEM. The people sick on Sunday evenings, dreading work the next week. The people out there who cry coming home to their families at night. The people who are hanging on by a thread and aren't getting the support and attention they deserve. The people who aren't living up to their potential or recognized when they do. The leaders who want to do better, but don't know how. The young people who are in school today and excited about the next chapter, only to be let down. My children.
