Why is it Radical? Radical doulas expand upon the support and care model of mainstream doulas in their attention to diversity and social justice. The radical doula model is inclusive and advocates for underserved and marginalized groups of people. A Radical Mental Health Doula is inherently intersectional, feminist, anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-ableist, anti-homophobic, and trans-inclusive. We Advocate! As a framework that is catered towards the individual rather than the institution, the RMHD project aims to provide a platform for marginalized and underserved people experiencing mental health challenges to uphold their rights, needs, dignity, and humanity, while amplifying their voices. Our individualized model of care complements other mental health services. RMHDs support and enable people experiencing mental health challenges to move through encounters with different services more smoothly, with less violence, and in ways that would better uphold their rights and dignities. The Radical Mental Health Doula Project is a community-engaged research project that values the voices of people with lived experiences in mental health. It is enlightening how entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers realize the importance of having specialized care for women at different stages of their lives, from early adulthood to pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, and senior years. More importantly, digital health innovators who are offering physical health services do not separate physical health from mental health and try to collaborate to provide holistic care (although, at this point, it may be redundant to call the bundle of physical and mental health "holistic care" – we should call it care). Sexual and reproductive health, rights and bodily autonomy MUST stay in the Pact for the Future. This isn't just access to safe abortion or prevention of FGM, but also includes biological, residential, socio-economic, and socio-cultural factors such as maternal health, menstrual health including peri-menopause and menopause, prevention of HIV, access to CSE, building bodily autonomy and self-efficacy, and driving financial and policy commitments. By integrating SRH into the Pact for the Summit of the Future, we can counter the rollback on global SRHR and bodily autonomy, and address some of the gaps left by international frameworks like ILO C190, CEDAW, and CRC. These frameworks, while important, do not fully encompass all areas of SRH rights and bodily autonomy. Enshrining these rights in a global declaration not only aligns with the UDHR, ICESCR, and the Beijing Declaration(1995), but also ensures a comprehensive approach to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and supporting the rights and dignity of women and girls across their life course. This is crucial for fostering a future where every individual can exercise their full human rights and contribute to sustainable development. This year, we celebrate #ICPD30, marking 30 years since the International Conference on Population and Development. As we look forward to 2025, we will celebrate 30 years since the Beijing Conference and Platform for Action. As we wind down Mental Health Awareness Month, we are pleased to share results of a pilot PRSA-ECD online survey conducted with our membership. Following are some key findings of the 31 results received: ⏳48.4% of respondents mostly prioritize their mental health. 💻The majority works 40-50 hours per week in their PR roles and 10-20 hours per week with PRSA-related activities. 😬51.9% feel stress in their PR positions. 🤷‍♀️Burnout is real, with 64.5% of respondents attributing at least some contribution of "hustle culture" to their overall stress levels. PRSA-ECD will be taking this survey data to formulate next steps, including creating a mental health toolkit and fact sheet, conducting more research, and continuing conversations and actions both at the PRSA East Central District and Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) national levels. The White House wants to buy you diapers. It’s a noble goal. The White House is spot on to want to address our country’s ongoing maternal health crisis. This is part of an initiative they unveiled in 2022 which has now seen some positive results. One of the popular programs involves Newborn Supply Kits, delivering a bag of baby supplies to new parents. The kits are modeled on successful programs in other countries, such as Finland (though in Finland the kits are delivered as baby boxes that double as a crib, and the U.S. delivers them in bags). The White House has big names like Olivia Wilde, Ciara and Kelly Rowland helping with their promotion, because what new parent doesn’t prefer their diapers to be endorsed by a celebrity? The problem is the diapers. Not that babies shouldn’t have diapers, it’s just that diapers have become a stand-in for helping parents when they’re not actually what parents need. When you break down what the actual costs are for raising a young human, diapers may be a chunk of change, but they are hardly the wallet guzzlers that child care takes up, or the financial hit that comes from losing your job if you take time off and don’t have paid leave or job protections. --> Common expenses for a baby’s first year now add up to $15,775. But this doesn’t include the cost of full time child care, which can average $321 PER WEEK, or $1284 PER MONTH. The cost of child care is much higher if you live in an expensive part of the country or urban areas. (Hello, D.C.) --> Moms lose an average of $9,500 when they take parental leave. And this is assuming their job allows such leave and holds their position for them when they return. --> The average out-of-pocket expenses for pregnancy and child care are between $4,000 and $5,000 - and this is the cost WITH health insurance. The costs are even higher if there are complications or a NICU stay. The cost of diapers? $70 to $80 per month. Compare that to the cost of child care, and it’s just a rounding error. Sometimes an article comes along that perfectly captures a moment of cultural change. This piece just out from The Washington Post illustrates EXACTLY why we're seeing a shift in women's health conversations: "Perimenopause education stopped in the United States as of July 9, 2002... Residency programs stopped investing time teaching menopause, while practicing doctors became much more hesitant to prescribe HRT... These women suffered through their perimenopausal symptoms while their daughters watched. Now, 20 years later, those daughters are fumbling toward middle age themselves — and they want answers... The difference is that now, their Gen X and millennial patients won't stand for it: 'The women who outgrew the WHI have become enraged.'" At Midi Health, this resonates deeply with our mission. At some point in their lives, nearly everybody will require home-based care and support. Almost 20% of seniors require help with bathing, eating, and other activities of daily living. The percentage is even higher for older seniors, and there are also non-elderly people who need these services because of disabilities.    Reiterating what we’ve long believed to be true at Sharecare – the last mile of healthcare is in the home. 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞: global childhood immunization coverage has stalled in 2023, leaving 2.7 million more children un- and under-vaccinated compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the latest WHO and UNICEF data. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for ongoing catch-up, recovery, and system-strengthening efforts. “The latest trends demonstrate that many countries continue to miss far too many children. Closing the immunization gap requires a global effort, with governments, partners, and local leaders investing in primary healthcare and community workers to ensure every child gets vaccinated, and that overall healthcare is strengthened.” ~UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.
