Transcript: Adrienne Murphy (Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care): First, in terms of understanding the pre-K landscape, the CUSP network has really helped us understand, in this three and four-year-old space, who's being served across the mixed delivery system, which has been especially important when our governor, the Healey Administration, announced a new Gateway to Pre-K Initiative, which included a proposal to deliver universal, high-quality preschool access for four-year-olds in all of our Gateway cities, which are our sort of mid-sized urban centers that are sort of the regional economic anchors across the state. And the cost model has been able to help us to benchmark sort of where are we now, who's being served across our licensed and funded early education care providers, across our public K-12 system, across our private school system, to be able to understand sort of the full landscape of who we're currently serving. And, by virtue of who we're currently serving, also, who are we not serving? Sort of what's the delta between where we are now in pre-K access for four-year-olds across the state, but really particularly in these gateway cities? And then sort of, what's the delta between where we are now and the universal access that is proposed in the gateway to Pre-K initiative? So, this is, you know, really one instance in which being able to know who are we currently serving, who are we not serving, and where are we not serving children has become really key for us and for Massachusetts as sort of the policy design process. Laura Klein’s talk: why a variety of research methods are essential for understanding customers and the market holistically. 💡 Segmenting data and examining diverse metrics allow us to capture the full story of what’s really happening, but, most importantly, there’s no substitute for directly listening to our users to learn about their true needs and behaviors. Insights we can’t find in data alone! I had the extraordinary privilege to be joined by two luminaries at FreedomFest, no others than technology visionary and wizard economist George Gilder, and leading evolutionary biologist Bret Weinstein in a conversation around the upcoming #Singularity and its implications for homo sapiens as a “leap” on the evolutionary scale.  Are we going to be dislocated by a superintelligence exceeding all humans? Or will we partner with it in co-creating new rules for civilization that will optimize the “objective function” of humanity? (“Truth cannot resist the market forces” as Bret coined it.) Bret assessed the downsides of how we organized civilization so far: "As of now 'governance' is used by governments as a proxy for power." We the People are caught in this trap! This extends to the “governance” of AI – the AI that Palantir uses to enable its clients to “win” in War using the power of AI to lock/trap us more and more into the “winners and losers” zero-sum games “Matrix” dungeon. Can we find ways to use AI to transcend our limitations and support us in co-designing novel governance structures with rules that enable everyone to flourish to their best potential? George Gilder, author of “Life after Google” took on from there pointing out that we are still in the “IBM era” with AI and still coming from a centralized MO: for Google “safety” means “control” which was tightened even more with the decision to only tag “authoritative” and “expert” information. What does this mean? It means that not you or I, but someone at Google will decide for you what is relevant, and what you can find through a Google search (which uses AI) to answer your questions. As of now AI is only amplifying Moloch aka the zero-sum, win-lose games. Moreover “merit” and incentives to “thrive for excellence” will disappear from the values that fueled humanity’s progress, being replaced with a class of “AI exploiters” who will succeed at using AI to deliver everything. This will result in a dystrophy of our natural capability as “niche shifters” (like Google Maps destroys our orientation). Having access to our API (natural language, motivational structures, drives, etc) AGIs will know us better than we know ourselves so they can play us, manipulate us and drive us to madness... Business model innovation around Retrieval Augmented Generation from O'Reilly -- they have indexed all the content on Safari and are using it to provide answers grounded in vetted and credible content (their unique sauce). Another innovation here is to credit/compensate authors for the fraction of their work used in a generated answer. While this is progress, the more well-grounded the summaries look, the more dangerous the inevitable mistakes will be -- irrelevant documents will still lead to misleading summaries, and there will still be hallucinations because of interpolations with the text used to train Llama. A good article by my colleague Lucas Schellenberg. One highlight: "Operational excellence in the age of AI is not just about automation but optimizing the entire production lifecycle to enhance quality, increase speed, and reduce waste." I would suggest, more broadly, that the introduction of AI into the production process will continue the contribution of technology as a factor in the production function -- and will extend and deepen technology's presence in growth theory (growth reality) to a degree that even Nobel Laureate Robert Solow could not have envisioned. This will, of course, likely entail 'factor substitution' to a degree not seen since the Industrial Revolution. That will be a difficult journey for many firms in many industries. But firms that do not embrace factor substitution (or cannot do so due to contractual arrangements governing existing factors of production) will likely fall further and further behind firms that do embrace it. That is not only unpleasant for particular firms, but it will change the competitive capability of entire nations. -rd

She heads up HAI (Human-Centered AI at Stanford University. Q: What do you you think about AI’s future, what worries you the most, and what gives you hope? It’s true. Facts don’t change minds, questions do. Collaboration does. Relationships do. In many cases, explaining your own position does little more than enable the person you disagree with to prepare their arguments against your facts. It’s far more effective to ask questions and seek data that enable them to see the gaps in their own reasoning. Enter these conversations with an open mind and an understanding that you both might learn something. Try it it works.
