I tutored students of the Fresh Start program weekly in Math, and was able to raise $5,000 for the Living Classrooms Foundation.
Fresh Start is a non-residential, community-based program that consists of vocational, academic, and social skills development training to adjudicated and out-of-school youth ages 16-19, most of whom are referred by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The program uses carpentry as a medium to teach academic, social, and job readiness skills. Fresh Start is a non-residential, community-based program that consists of vocational, academic, and social skills development training to adjudicated and out-of-school youth ages 16-19, most of whom are referred by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The program uses carpentry as a medium to teach academic, social, and job readiness skills. Students work in the Foundation’s Maritime Institute workshop building quality wooden furniture, cutting boards, and gifts for sale to the public. Students also receive classroom instruction and one-on-one tutoring to prepare them for their high school equivalency exam. The curriculum is designed to increase self-reliance, teach problem-solving and academic skills, and demonstrate how academic skills and knowledge are used in a practical work environment.

Here were a few of my favorite projects this month. BTW we have now completed over 50 financial models (for free) for Indiana small businesses through the State of Indiana's small business grant program that covers the cost of projections for our clients. A few of my favorite projects this month: 1. Acquisition of a small manufacturing business - We helped create a set of projections for a client that was seeking financing to acquire a business; however, in the process the projections clearly showed that the deal would not cash flow with the proposed purchase price. I think the purchase price will need to be renegotiated, but our process helped the buyer avoid a bad deal. 2. A startup, modern bowling alley - Our client is seeking $1.8 million for what promises to be a really fun bowling alley concept. We helped put together a financial model and helped determine what kind of customer volume they would need to have in order to reach profitability. 3. A car wash developer - Our client is a car wash entrepreneur, and his group has started several car washes from the ground up as well as acquired a number of car washes and revamped them. We helped model several new projects this month to support his financing requests. Total project costs across 4 locations amounted to roughly $9 million. Although the operating model is the same or similar in each location, each car wash had unique development costs and timing.
