Shake one hand and your life can change forever. Let me explain. One year ago, William King and I went to Venture Atlanta Conference, and it had more of an impact than we ever thought it could! (Crazy that it's already back again!) First off, who would have thought we would even be in the same room as Robert Herjavec?! His stories were profound and furthermore deeply empathetic as well. But it's also just so cool and inspiring to see fellow friends and colleagues pitching and presenting in front of some of the biggest VC's in the world. For all my fellow aspiring entrepreneurs venturing out to conferences like these, remember that it's not just about finding potential investors. (BUT IS INSANELY AWESOME IF YOU DO!) Yesterday, our cohort had the pleasure of meeting Hunter Hodnett. Not only did he give us fantastic guidance on creating our software development portfolios, but he also delivered an unexpected pep talk. We shared each of our "how we got to Carolina Code School" stories and were met with pure excitement about the power of our journeys. One concept Hunter mentioned stuck with me: "intrinsic drive." Though I had heard the phrase before, I hadn't truly grasped its meaning. After spending an hour exploring its psychology and some memes, I realized that intrinsic drive has made my software development journey unique. This journey is for me. Wax on…wax off… That’s how Friday’s masterclass in delivering a winning demo felt with Stewart Davison MSc, the Mr. Miyagi of housing tech! We took advantage of one of Stewart's Health Check days to help prepare for a demo we have coming up this week. As someone with a project management background, I expected a structured "project plan to success" approach, thinking I’d walk away with a formula to help me morph into a salesperson. But with over 20 years of experience in the housing sector, Stewart took it back to first principles. Instead of focusing on a rigid framework, he helped me discover how to tell our story in a way that feels authentic and works for me. What I appreciated most was his emphasis on doing what feels right for you, and not just following a one-size-fits-all approach. (Although, thankfully, there was still a section on time management to appease the project manager in me! 😅) Now I’m feeling prepped, energised and confident for this week’s demo! If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. I frequently use this line with my team. I knew taking on the CEO role at Ostendio would require change to release our potential energy. In the last 30 days there has been no shortage of positive changes at Ostendio. These changes would not have been possible without this open-minded team. My thesis was that there is a tremendous market demand for IT Governance, Risk, and compliance services in the SMB space but there was no GRC platform that allowed MSPs and MSSPs to deliver those services effectively. In my first 2 weeks we: ·        Rebuilt our Go-to-market strategy. ·        Rebuilt the channel sales program and pricing. ·        Overhauled our CRM and buyer intent data platforms. ·        Implemented a new streamlined electronic quoting tool. ·        Signed as a vendor with a leading cloud distributor, launching by June. ·        Created the Ostendio partner community. ·        Conducted market research and created client feedback loops. ·        Closed Series B funding. Like the Juggernaut, we have created what seems to be unlimited kinetic energy. In the weeks following the changes, Ostendio has signed more partnerships with MSP’s and MSSP’s for our Compliance and Risk platform than have signed up in the previous 2 years. Our sales team is completely overwhelmed, which is a good problem to have. Going from a few new partners per month to over 100 new partners will do that. When you hire someone in a new state, do you need to register to do business there when you use a PEO? If you ask most PEOs, they would say, "Yes - you should also register your entity with the state if you have employees there." But why? Technically with a PEO you are "co-employing" people. Typically PEOs don't handle foreign registrations or secretary of state filings for your entity, so that's on you. If you're not registering in a new state is because you don't know how or don't have time, Discern makes it extremely easy. You can complete your foreign registration filing in a few minutes directly out of our product. I don't know if I fully realized it when we were building the product, but it is by far one of our biggest points of value add for companies growing across state lines. Registering in a new state is a shockingly annoying process to do on your own. You typically need to get a certificate of good standing before you can even file, and sometimes the filing involves publication requirements where you need to advertise your foreign registration in an actual newspaper.
