How can you help low-income students through the admissions process?
Don't judge a school by its price tag! Example: School A Cost of Attendance = $30,000 - SAI = $2,500 Need for Financial Aid = $27,500 % of Need Met = 50% ($13,750) - Average amount of self-help = $7,000 Anticipated Gift Aid = $6,750 Anticipate Net Cost = $23,250 School B Cost of Attendance = $60,000 - SAI = $4,500 Need for Financial Aid = $55,500 % of Need Met = 100% ($55,500) - Average amount of self-help = $7,000 Anticipated Gift Aid = $48,500 Anticipate Net Cost = $11,500 Think of the cost in terms of ROI. Will you graduate in 4, 5, or 6 years? What will be your cumulative debt. If total debt > anticipated annual salary, then it's not a good financial fit. If your total debt < your annual salary, then it's a good financial fit.

How can you help low-income students through the admissions process?
When I help students navigate this maze to college, I help them build a list of colleges based on 1) Academic Fit and 2) Financial Fit. These are two MUST-HAVE requirements for me. From there I will let the student whittle down the list based on 3) Emotional Fit – their wants. But the foundation of Academic Fit has nothing to do with a student’s passions. Instead you must discover your aptitudes – how your brain is wired for success. I use the Highlands Battery Assessment, https://www.highlandsco.com/whats-highlands-ability-battery/. Based on those results, create fit-to-major extracurriculars that show initiative and impact. Reach out to the colleges to show interest. Lastly craft a thematic college application, especially essays.

How can you help low-income students through the admissions process?
As a former Director of Financial Aid, I have strong opinions on this subject. My initial response exceeded the space limit by a factor of 10. So you’re seeing a much abbreviated version. I spend a lot of time on finding schools that are financial fit. More than academics, I have seen money be the biggest obstacle preventing low-income students from being successful in the college experience. Simply filling out a FAFSA is not enough. Because even if the financial aid formula shows you need financial assistance, it doesn’t mean the schools you’re applying to have the money to give you. The best free online tool that I can recommend is College Aid Pro’s tool called MyCAP, https://collegeaidpro.com/my-cap-platform/.
