Sounds like a model that needs to be practiced more and awareness of it spread more widely. As we know, without additional information or guidance, many coastal donors tend to fund locally or in geographies they are familiar with. Grateful to Inside Philanthropy for recognizing The Just Trust as one of the key organizations funding and partnering with criminal justice leaders in the South, one of the most under-resourced areas for philanthropy and investment in our issue area. Who will be the superpowers of philanthropy in the next 25 years? Who will have the capacity and resources to influence social, economic, and political arenas? The answer is women. Historically, women have always played crucial roles in philanthropy. Early social service work was seen as “women’s work.” Female philanthropy started with parochial institutions, where nuns, deaconesses, and women of all faiths offered comfort to the marginalized in their communities. Now, with women holding more than half of private wealth in the U.S. and the capacity to influence global change, their impact is poised to grow exponentially. Despite progress, support for women's and girls' organizations remains low, receiving just 1.8% of charitable giving. However, women are stepping up to fill this gap, often giving broadly, holistically, and collectively. They focus on aligning their passion with their resources, working collaboratively, and demanding transparency about the impact of their contributions. Women’s philanthropy offers vast opportunities: from supporting traditional nonprofits to becoming angel investors and engaging in impact investing. Here's a quick look at an initiative we've been working on in Philly called Project Equity. This initiative works to combat the rising foreclosure rates in the Philly by addressing the root causes, such as predatory lending and discriminatory practices, that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Through a holistic approach, we provide financial support, resources, and promote financial wellness to help homeowners stay in their homes. Our strategy includes four pillars: 🏠 1). Proactive interventions: Addressing issues early by reaching out to homeowners at risk of foreclosure before they face serious financial difficulties. 🏠 2). Community engagement: Community engagement involves working closely with homeowners, local leaders, and organizations to raise awareness and build support networks for addressing shared issues. 🏠 3). A supportive ecosystem: A network of services, resources, and relationships that work together to help homeowners in need, such as financial counseling, legal aid, and emotional support, fostering an environment where individuals can thrive. 🏠 4). Connecting homeowners directly to resources: Connecting homeowners to essential services, like financial counseling, legal help, and relief programs, ensures they have the resources to prevent foreclosure and stay in their homes. At the moment, we're actively seeking partnerships with community organizations and the city to expand our reach and serve more residents. By collaborating, we aim to enhance the support available to homeowners at risk of foreclosure and ensure that more individuals have access to the resources and assistance they need to maintain housing stability. It's been an absolute privilege to be an Ambassador for TBP and to collaborate with Shaady and colleagues in our shared pursuit of transformation - to the funding experience and to funding systems. Excited about further collaboration as this second chapter unfolds. Because there is still a long way to go. As Shaady and Pia note here: "even with transformation afoot, there are still competing forces inhibiting our ability to realize the future that so many of us are working toward". A History of Housing Policy Through a Racial Equity Lens https://lnkd.in/eDPz8uCb Since the earliest days of our nation, housing and land policies have had enormous influence over where and how people of different races and ethnicities have been able to live. To address current conditions of racial inequities in housing and place-based outcomes, we need to understand the historical context in which such conditions were created and implemented. This timeline describes how centuries of racist and exploitive housing and land policies fostered many of the socio-economic inequities currently borne by Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC). Clicking through each era identified below reveals specific policy events from each that were instrumental to shaping housing outcomes for BIPOC communities, as well as whether their effects on balance produced negative, positive, or mixed results for BIPOC communities. While this timeline does not address every practice that federal, state, and local governments actively or passively used, the examples described below nonetheless reveal many of the ways that housing policies have historically and systemically enforced or facilitated racial segregation and marginalization.

Check your assumptions. Philanthropy does not look the same in every community. Christal Cherry’s post on “What Fundraisers Should Know About Black Philanthropy” in Greater Public’s blog last summer is inspiring: "'The term philanthropy does not fully embrace just how diverse the nature of giving is, in practice. At its core, the practice of philanthropy is rooted in an unspoken contract committed to the collective benefit of the community.' (Muhmmad, 2021) Black people embrace and understand this and have relied on our full spectrum of giving to survive and thrive for centuries. It is time to shift the narrative and see the Black community as individuals who are actively engaged in philanthropy by both supporting and creating solutions to uplift one another. We know the definition of philanthropy extends beyond financial giving."

Instead of attempting to completely sanitize their online environment, he said adults should focus on equipping children with tools to critically assess the information they encounter." All across the country, people are searching for ways to positively impact democracy at the local level. I'm always surprised and delighted when people stumble onto us at CivicLex and reach out to learn more about what we're up to. For our first few years, we had a hard time articulating exactly what CivicLex was. We don't quite fit the mold for most of the other types of civic infrastructure out there. A year or so ago, through our LION: Local Independent Online News Publishers Sustainability Audit, the wonderful Bene Cipolla encouraged us lean in to our uniqueness. For us to be confident in our uniqueness, we decided that we needed to clearly articulate our model. LION's Sustainability Audit program (one of the best things going in the broader democracy field, in my opinion) then supported a series of staff retreats and personal reflections at the tail end of last year where we set aside our daily tasks and thought critically about our work, operations, and sustainability. What came out of this introspection was a new model for CivicLex -- one that strengthens civic health at the local level by improving three sets of conditions: civic literacy, social cohesion, and how our institutions engage the public in decision-making. We clearly defined the five strategies we use to do that, and the activities, metrics, outcomes, and impacts we're tracking to understand if it's working. Now, I'm happy to share the first of a series of posts that I'm writing about our model, how we evaluate it, and the lessons we've learned. For those of you who work in or with philanthropy, I highly recommend this excellent paper by Daniel Stid for the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, looking at the relationship between pluralism, philanthropy and polarization. Daniel (who ran the US Democracy program at William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and is the Chair of the Board of More in Common US), looks mainly at the US but the paper applies to other contexts.
