I really don't like the suggestion in this article that the term 'dirtbag' should be applied to field sound recordists - itinerant or otherwise. Sound recording is a skilled craft ... at its best involving quite a bit of artistry (not to mention expensive, sophisticated equipment). Of course, surfers, climbers etc are also masters of their craft who use pricey specialist gear. As are jewelers, potters, perfumers or other skilled artisans - but you wouldn't call them dirtbag because they happened to spend time in a van, traveling around, camping, while working and getting material/inspiration for their craft. My feeling is that field sound recording is (still) counter-cultural enough to not need to stress that aspect. Let's keep the term 'dirtbag' away from the wonderful obsession, profession, and pastime of wildlife field recording. It detracts from the deep understanding and grace that field sound recordists, like other artisans - and elite sportspeople, bring to their work.

It’s unfortunate that many qualified individuals miss out on opportunities because they aren’t aware of positions suited to their skills. Enterprise companies often struggle to properly articulate their need for creative and interactive skill sets, which are similar to those in the gaming industry. Many times, they don't know how to accurately describe or validate these needs. When trying to build internal capabilities, positions are often mislabeled based on traditional standards, leading to confusion and missed connections. For instance, companies may assume a developer with Blender knowledge can serve as a 3D artist, which is not the case. Or they might label such a position as a designer or another term that a 3D artist wouldn’t typically search for. This mislabeling creates a disconnect between the job listing and the talent pool. Additionally, the recruitment process itself can be flawed. I’ve seen applications rejected based on the personal biases of recruiters who may not have an artistic background. This means many talented individuals never make it to the interview stage, which is disheartening. The issue lies not with the recruiters but with the organization’s inflexibility and outdated processes. Consider a retail company wanting to enter the metaverse or interactive 3D space. How should they proceed? Should they hire internally to manage the initiative, bring in consultants for strategy, or hire an external expert? And how can they ensure this external hire is capable of building a new department or capability if the person hiring them has no experience with that industry? Chicken and egg situation I guess. With so many people in need of work and companies eager to develop strong interactive, digital, and gaming capabilities, some guidance is crucial. Accurate job descriptions, better validation processes, and an adaptable organizational structure are key to bridging this gap. Music and SEND The number of children with special educational needs who are attending mainstream EYFS and KS1 settings at primary schools is increasing. The need for group activities that are accessible and developmentally appropriate for all children in the EYFS is more important than ever. The need for activities that SENCo teachers can use to support small targeted groups of children with developmental delay throughout KS1/2 is vital. What if there was an activity that works for both universal EYFS and targeted Additional Resources Provision throughout Primary. 🎶 What if that activity is fun, energising and uplifting for everyone involved. 🎶 What if that activity has been shown by neuroscience studies to hone neural connectivity across the brain more efficiently than any other activity. 🎶 What if that activity has a privileged portal to attention and memory. 🎶 What if that activity develops group skills- taking turns, co-operation, self-regulation, empathy. 🎶 What if that activity develops sound processing and rhythimic awareness, strengthening foundations for literacy, maths and learning generally. 🎶 Wouldn't it be worth investing in training and resources to equip the EYFS and SENCo team to deliver this activity regularly for all children?
