What are your Keystone Habits? If you've read The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, I bet you remember the story of Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America). The manufacturer had struggled to produce financial results, so they hired a new CEO, named Paul O'Neill. And in 1987 that new CEO implemented a safety program that had investors scratching their heads. All he talked about was worker safety, and reducing the number of days lost to injury. And at first, no one understood why. But when O'Neill left the company 13 years later, not only was Alcoa one of the safest companies in the world, it was also one of the most profitable. All because O'Neill understood the power of Keystone Habits. He knew that if he could shift the company culture around safety, the ripple effects would impact every piece of the company. And those results would show up on the bottom line. And the same is true in your business. Focusing on a few Keystone elements can transform your business. Get the foundations right. And hammer your key items again, and again, and again; until those Keystone Habits are second nature for you, your team, and your business. This might mean practicing your values daily. It could be routines that are ingrained in your daily tasks. Or it could be something deceptively simple, like worker safety. Whatever Habits you decide to implement in your business, just be sure you bring the same conviction that O'Neill did at Alcoa. What do thousands of spare parts in storage units all across a sprawling business campus have to do with leadership development? Only everything... I met with a CEO yesterday whose family-owned manufacturing company averages $25M annual revenue. As I toured his sprawling campus, 2 things became apparent: 1. He makes bold investments in his business when he sees opportunity for ROI; and 2. He holds on to thousands of spare parts that even his own employees often think are junk that should be thrown away. Some might call it hoarding or bad business, but a deeper dive showed he has no issue throwing things away when there's no perceived value. Every spare part in a shed on his campus holds the very-real possibility of future use or sale to someone else. And that works AS LONG AS you have a plan to leverage or extract that perceived value to realize the actual ROI. I’m wrong all the time. It makes me better at business. Forecasts, projections, predictions: they’re all important. But they are also hypothetical. They’re guesses (hopefully very educated ones) about what will happen with the business in the future. If I needed to be right all the time, I wouldn’t be willing to set goals based on guesses. I’d be afraid to be wrong. We have an expression that we use in our firm: directionally accurate. It means you are generally moving forward down the right path—even if you aren’t 100% sure what that path looks like all the way to the end. Finding out you’re wrong means two things: 1️⃣ You took action and moved forward. That’s already a win. 2️⃣ You have new information that will help move you even further down the path. That’s a win, too. Maybe two wrongs can make a right? 😉 #entrepreneurship #consulting #growthmethod
