Friday Introspection Community and connection are common buzzwords out there today when it comes to the challenges and solutions for mental health and well-being. In a world that has become so individualized and disconnected, the notion of community and connection only makes sense to be critical pieces of the solution. For some that is a reasonable ask and not that difficult to seek. For others there is something deeper creating a (perceived) barrier to the desired connection and community. I would argue that those with secure attachment styles find it easier to seek connection and community. While those with insecure or adaptive styles tend to struggle with it. I think the latter group is far more prevalent than we realize and requires some inner healing work to identify the barriers. The answers are typically not found cognitively above the neck, instead found in the body (nervous system), something those of us with a history of insecure attachment style disconnect from early in life, for survival purposes. Changes happening in our world (all of the division, individualization, distractions) are promoting early development that is insecure in nature as opposed to the healthier secure attachment. Not with intention or lack of love, instead a lack of awareness and knowledge. With that comes a highly sensitive nervous system that drives our thoughts, beliefs, actions, and behaviors. Those that already carry an insecure style are finding that the conditions are being exacerbated with the current state of affairs in the world. All of which is typically experienced without awareness. We are simply not taught. I support wholeheartedly that community and connection are critical pieces of the solution. But I also encourage those of us that struggle with that community and connection to go much deeper to identify the barriers that tend to make it uncomfortable. The community and connection then become part of the healing process once the healing of often unconscious wounds begins. Moral of the story is a strong belief and advocacy for going deeper, taking the inner journey to learn more about the true driver of your thoughts, beliefs, actions, and behaviors. The disconnection from our nervous system (and the underlying wounds) is the root of much of the chaos in the world today. That disconnection is rooted in individual and collective trauma. A movement towards collective healing changes our world in profound ways. It impacts all systems and institutions. Be curious and then show compassion for yourself and others. Most of us would probably like to think of ourselves as approachable at work. We might have bad moments, or bad days, but we will likely think that on the whole, we are approachable. However, approachability is not a static trait, and it's highly situational. Approachability is “a dynamic state that is constantly reconstructed through action” and is “more fragile” than often assumed. And because it’s more fragile, we have to keep working at it, and do so more proactively to invite speaking up and engagement than we realise. This is especially true if we’re in a position of leadership or power. DEIB hasn't been working. That was SHRM's stance and I tend to agree. Though I don't claim to know that their new approach is the better way, nor do I know what is. Today I tuned in to a webinar that said research shows training that focuses on our differences isn't working, and even causing people to solidify their biases. Again, I don't claim to have all the answers, but here's what I DO believe. Focusing on belonging can help. What are some ways we can do that? -Break favoritism by getting feedback from a variety of people across different levels. -Stand up for the interrupted person. -Ensure no one is left out for that special lunch or celebration. -Have lunch with different people, rather than always the same people. -Help every leader in your organization believe they belong in leadership. -Show the same level of respect to the "annoying" employee as you do the quiet one. -Don't have "cliquey" conversations and "inside jokes". This isn't high school. -Don't treat the new people as outsiders: "I know you are new here, but...". -Stop using unique acronyms without defining them clearly. -Review similarly situated employees before making employment decisions to ensure precedent and policy is considered above personality and other factors that allow bias. It is our work to examine what they might be protecting, what costs they are exacting, what opportunities might exist when we acknowledge and affirm them rather than shunning them or letting them take center stage.
