After nearly 20 years of building TV apps, here are the hidden costs your vendors aren't talking about ↴ Media brands consistently focus on upfront development costs while overlooking the strategic implications of maintenance. Here's what REALLY drives cost: • Platform SDK updates (2-3x annually) • Security compliance requirements • Cross-platform feature parity • Performance optimization • Fragmented codebases • UI/UX consistency Each requirement compounds across every platform in your ecosystem. Multiply that by EVERY platform you're on. And in some cases, multiple devices per platform. Maintainable by design means building on a unified framework with shared components, consistent naming conventions, and centralized API handling. It's about writing code once and deploying everywhere - while still maintaining SDK integrity on each platform. When evaluating vendors, be sure to ask these critical questions: 1. How are platform updates handled across devices? 2. What's the process for rolling out new features? 3. Can you show me your maintenance workflow? 4. This is a buzzy article about the titans who lead the streaming companies. By the way, they are all white men, which is sort of odd in 2024. Anyhoo - some interesting takeaways for us as consumers or people selling into the streaming universe, which is all traditional TV is now. 1. 200 million is the new number. That's the number of subscribers needed to run a profitable service. Netflix, Prime, and Disney are there. 2. Ads are growing - and probably the only way to make TV work long-term. 3. The HBO model of critical successes that makes you want to pay - is declining. It's all about weekly/monthly engagement. 4. So - with that in mind. You need sports. 5. You need shows that don't win awards but are great light entertainment. 6. When the shakeout is done, all anyone knows is Netflix will be the king of the mountain. For us Canadians, it seems clear - for originals, it's highly local stuff that can scale globally, and it better be cheap. (Squid Games is the #1 show on Netflix ever - and it didn't come from the LA system). Or we can be a great branch plant economy for Hollywood—which we already are—with skilled technicians and lower overall costs. And if you care about English Canadian culture - I wonder whether something more radical is in order. No matter how well-meaning or skilled commissioners are at Bell, Rogers Communications, CBC or what's left of Corus Entertainment you can't afford many new shows. And you only get hits by making lots of shows. One radical idea - how about providing a creators fund? - similar to what Tik Tok or Youtube have offered in the past. If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident here's a $5000 grant to make stuff this year and try to make a go of it. If the IP goes anywhere here's a higher tier - say $20,000 - to develop it with a Canadian producer to try and sell it somewhere. We need to move to guerrilla tactics in the content wars. Very insightful article shedding light on the interplay between SVOD and FAST services. Some consumers are shifting from subscriptions to FAST platforms, while others are finding new programs and subscribing to services. The hope is for both types of services to become more complimentary in the future. Great read!

Post-podcast bubble it looks like deals are being made again for real businesses. The PodX model is to roll up profitable audio businesses with real revenue. Given that greed and fantasy led everyone to imagine their loss-making audio division was the next Tesla, or that their revenue alone was worth multiples of total valuation, it’s good for the industry that sanity and hard cash is returning. After pets dot com and the yo app there came Amazon and Tik Tok. Jo Kinsella, the lines between traditional linear TV and digital streaming have blurred, and AD-ID is a powerful tool for bridging this gap. AD-ID's metadata can unlock some of the best features of both worlds. If you, like me, believe that impressions will drive the future of our industry, our systems must support capabilities inherent to an impression-based delivery model. Two key capabilities are critical: competitive separation for TV ads across program breaks and frequency caps for streaming ads. AD-ID plays a crucial role in managing competitive separation by embedding metadata about the industry, brand, and model. While frequency caps present a more complex challenge—ideally spanning delivery mechanisms and content providers—AD-ID can help by standardizing naming conventions across platforms. To fully embrace an impression-based model, we must shift from spot-based currency to impressions. This requires a way to measure TV impressions, a medium currently lacking an inherent measurement system. While STB data and ACR have made strides, inconsistencies remain, especially when compared to digital streaming, where impressions are often measured by viewing quartiles. It's clear the industry needs a better solution. Transitioning to an impression-based model without one-to-one addressable ad delivery means billing will depend on the number of viewers meeting target criteria at any given time. Maximizing target audience viewership by spot becomes essential, and this is where data-driven linear strategies will shine. While other metrics like panel-based viewership and attention metrics have their place, I believe impressions will become the preferred currency for targeting and measurement. The technology exists to make this shift, and it's time to overcome market inertia.

"I don't think frequency capping is as big a challenge as we think it is," says Mike Follett, CEO of Lumen Research AT #ATSL2024. Lumen, Havas Media Network, and Brand Metrics have teamed up for a massive brand lift study centered on attention metrics. Lots of interesting findings, including tying attention and business outcomes. More exposure says FOLLETT: "If you analyze display advertising on an individual impression basis, it looks like crap." We should be examining ads by packs of 10 or 20—it's the aggregate where we see the impact. Optimizing to outcomes are great, but it's also a lagging model. Attention can be optimized to in real time. The key is understanding how much attention is needed to get the job done—we can use it as a predictor rather than examining post-campaign metrics.
