Revolutionizing LA's Streets: Waymo's Autonomous Leap Forward As an enthusiastic follower of autonomous vehicle technology, I have been eager to see its launch and evolution across the LA landscape. I have been closely following the driverless ride-hailing space and mind-blowing advances for some time. I’ve even been fortunate enough to experience several test rides firsthand already. It is difficult to describe the smile you'll have the minute your car pulls up and you get in. You'll surprisingly adjust within minutes and be amazed looking at the self moving steering wheel. I recently gained insight around Waymo's path to rolling out full commercial services locally, something i've been eagerly following. They have been dynamically testing unfared vehicles in designated LA zones under CPUC and DMV supervision since January 2023. During this test phase, they’ve offered free rides to vetted participants like those with access passes. The expanded authorization on January 11, 2024 from the DMV allows Waymo to test vehicles across wider swaths of metro LA including Santa Monica and Hawthorne. Waymo has now filed a request with the CPUC on January 19, 2023 to offer rides for payment in those expanded domains. Get yourself on the waitlist. The full filing linked here provides their updated Passenger Safety Plan submitted as part of seeking CPUC approval to finally charge fares across newly accessible areas. Waymo seems to share local leaders’ care for mindful integration. As LA prepares for the 2028 Olympic spotlight on reviving transit, I eagerly anticipate the role innovators like Waymo might play in continuing momentum. LA residents can learn more about the technology powering this futuristic rideshare at a Waymo pop-up tour event on January 24th from 12-4PM at Silver Lake's trendy Erewhon Market. Some areas listed include: Los Angeles (City and County) Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Culver City, Santa Monica Hawthorne, El Segundo, Inglewood, Gardena, Vernon, Compton Road Types: Freeways, highways, city streets, rural roads and Parking lots Speed Limits: Waymo's ODD includes roads with posted speed limits up to 65 mph Here is a video of the depot where many of the Waymo cars are stored here in LA.

This demo marks the beginning our generic off-roads #autonomousdriving research, at very high speeds, i.e., near-drift speeds, without requiring HD maps, with driving policies being learned via unsupervised and reinforcement learning. During navigation our vehicle consistently maintained speeds in the range of 50-63 KM/H. For human experts, typical driving speeds range around 45 KM/H, as beyond that there is a high probability of vehicle skidding and drifting (i) around turns, and (ii) when brakes are applied. The terrain was rutted, and highly uneven, with large and sharp pieces of rocks scattered all around. Any error would have resulted in a near-fatal incident for the safety driver (Founder and CEO, Sanjeev Sharma, in this case). At high-speeds, there are high chances of vehicle hitting those pieces of rocks around the road, and getting rattled and thrown off-balance. It can be seem from the intermittent outside camera clips that the vehicle is drifting at many points, but still able to correct its course and controls to gain balance. This demo was done in the city of Bhopal in India. This demo in particular made use of classical #reinforcementlearning for learning control and motion planning policies. The underlying research is our long-shot cutting-edge fundamental R&D, with a goal of allowing #autonomousvehicles to navigate previously unknown and unseen terrains, with no HD maps, for military and general off-roads autonomous navigation applications. One critical component of this research, that makes it different from any off-roads autonomy program out there in the world is that learning is purely unsupervised, with no labelled data required. Going forward, we will showcase driving policies, how they visualize the environment, the learned abstract representation of the world for end-to-end holistic decision making and motion planning, and much more. #deeplearning #unsupervisedlearning #AI

Nice work Aaron. For sample data or smaller areas, depending on your willingness to walk and the density of the forest, the TrueView Go is a great system for many industries including forestry. Perhaps 5-8 times slower than drone LiDAR, the benefit of capturing the data from the ground rather than in the air is quite significant. #TrueViewGo #Lp360Land #HandHeldSlam

It’s amazing to see how much radar has progressed lately: - dramatically improved resolution - no visual impairment by rain or fog as opposed to optical sensing modalities What do you think about 4D radar. We have always gone straight after the hardest problems first. Check out this throwback to early work on off-road autonomy in our co-founder Byron Boots' lab at the University of Washington as we pushed our autonomous RZR's through a wide range of difficult off-road conditions. That is our co-founder Greg Okopal riding the robot in the safety driver seat. This is real off-road autonomy: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.
