Reflecting on my transition from a very fulfilling military career into the civilian sector, I've come to appreciate the nuances in language and terminology between these two worlds that you may think devalue your experience when you attempt to translate these to your CV. Navigating this transition posed challenges, especially when trying to reflect the position held in the military, and how it compared to civilian counterparts. Adapting to the distinct vocabulary and concepts prevalent in civilian industries could feel overwhelming at times with this linguistic gap and how you may think your terminology could impact your career trajectory when put on paper. However, I've learned that it's our core skills, experiences, and values that truly define us - not just the titles we've previously held. The leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills I honed in the military have proven to be invaluable assets in my civilian journey and will always shine through during any interview. As I explore new opportunities post-military service, I am focused on finding a role that aligns with both my unique skill set and my passion for making a meaningful impact. It's essential to seek a position where I can leverage my strengths while continuing to grow and develop professionally, tweaking my CV to match the requirements and language of the role I am applying for. Questions about certifications, courses, and career paths loom large. But here's the twist: I challenge the norm. When asked about what certifications and courses one should be focusing on, my answer is simple: NONE. In today's digital era, knowledge is at our fingertips, often for free. Instead of chasing certificates, take a moment to reflect on your military journey and the real-world wins you've achieved.(If you can convert it into quantifiable numbers,even better). Many of us struggle with where to go next. But remember, military service is like running an organization , single-handedly at times—managing maintenance, operations, payroll, and more. It's about thriving in ambiguity, achieving big with limited resources, and leading through tough times. Embrace your military expertise—whether in engineering, accounting, logistics, or any other field. It's your secret weapon for success in the corporate realm. I find it interesting when I see requisitions for a training professional that profess that the applicant needs to have X number of years in their industry, or using their tools, or some other specific proprietary process or another. Here's the thing: as training professionals, we follow a process, a scientific process, a proven process to do our work. That is our skill. We use ADDIE, or SAM, or CAREY or any number of methodologies you care to mention, but it all boils down to the same thing: working with business, system, or process subject matter experts to uncover current behavioral state and desired behavioral state and then craft an adult-learning centered solution, if warranted. This process works irrespective of the industry, tool, system, or geographical location. It is my hope that organizations look to hiring professionals who know how to impact learning outcomes and less to our years in a bank, or our years working in Salesforce, or our years in analyzing healthcare revenue cycles. That's not our job. I would go so far as to say you do not want a subject matter expert as your training professional just as you wouldn't want your mechanic to rewire your home. Hire for the training skill, not your industry knowledge.

Do you know the difference between being veteran ready vs veteran friendly? Yelp let me explain a little bit: Veteran Friendly gives away freebies during national holidays, but doesn’t hire veterans. Veteran Ready has a team dedicated for military outreach and the families. Veteran Friendly uses military stock photos for recruiting and marketing. (We have seen those fake photos before) Veteran Ready understands the commitment and sacrifice veterans and their families make to the country. Veteran Friendly thanks of your military service as just a number to help their bottom line. Veteran Ready values your opinions and knows your military service is important. So if you’re a veteran friendly organization you can improve and become veteran ready Veterans, Active Duty and Military families do your research on that organization before you apply. Don’t end up in place where your only a number. Your experiences and leadership is worth more than a number. 50 years ago today in Ogden, Utah five people were tortured in a home audio store. Three of the five were murdered. Three enlisted Air Force airmen were charged and convicted. It is believed that up to six were involved, the other three identities are unknown. The victims were forced to drink drain cleaner. One had a pen kicked into their ear and an 18 year old female was raped. The three victims that died were fatally shot execution style. Victims were bound while suspects robbed the store. This crime made its way to the FBI’s Crime Classification Manual for new FBI recruits. One victim’s story became the basis for the 1982 book “Victim: The Other Side of Murder.” These murders were the basis for the 1991 CBS television movie “Aftermath: A Test of Love.” Survival Protection points: 👉🏻 It is not likely the suspects will let you live if they’re not trying to hide their identity. 👉🏻 If taken to a basement or a back room start scanning for weapons and other exits immediately. 👉🏻 Don’t let perpetrators bind you effectively. If behind the back make sure it’s palm to palm and make your hands wide. 👉🏻 When you choose to defend. Attack violently and mentally prepare yourself to kill. 👉🏻 Work as a team your life depends on it. This was a particular heinous robbery that brought fear to the community. Ever feel like you are not advancing in life. Like life is just passing you by❓ I have felt like this too. ➡ Not Motivated ➡ Unsure & Scared ➡ Ashamed I wasn’t where I wanted to be I was blessed when I joined the military, I learned a very valuable lesson. 💡 Perspective matters… Here is how the military shifted my perspective over the years: o If you want to change your situation, look at the environment you’re in. o You won’t always know what is on the other side, sometimes you just need faith. o Practicing discipline will change your life. o Leadership is about serving others and outgrowing yesterday you. o Life is way too short, laugh and love more. o Never judge a book by its cover, that person may have some cool stories. o Physical fitness is the discipline of the mind, not only the body. o Time flies, even if you're not having fun, have more fun. o There is beauty in the world, you must find it. o There is a 50,000 / 30,000 / 20,000 / 10,000 / 1,000-foot view of life. o It takes a team, a vision, faith, and commitment to do extraordinary things. 👇 I know that you think you can go at it alone, and potentially you can for a bit, but eventually, you will need someone at your corner. Don’t suffer in silence, BELIEVE that there are people out there who want to see you SUCCEED just as much as they want to. Begin challenging your current perspective today.: 👉 Talk to someone new. Outside of your current circle. 👉 Start learning about something that interests you, spiritually or creatively. 👉 Go for a long walk - I mean long and just be with your thoughts. (No music)  👉 Challenge yourself to do something hard this week/month. 👉 Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while and catch up. 👉 Read a book just for the sake of reading - something that piques your interest. 👉 Go to a park and just observe people. Imagine what they are thinking to themselves. 👉 Play like a kid - outside or inside. 💯 By taking on NEW experiences, you will continuously challenge your perspective allowing you to continue to adapt & grow. Mental health within the military community... morning thoughts.. From my experience as a spouse, the biggest hurdle has been re-establishing care with every move. For general wellness, this can be challenging, but you find ways to work through it. For mental wellness, however, the difficulty of retelling your struggles or story with each PCS (Permanent Change of Station) can be overwhelming. It’s hard enough to do this once or twice, especially if the fit isn’t right- but imagine having to start over every 2-3 years due to limitations in the mental health system. One change I hope to see in the future is allowing practitioners to practice across state lines. This single adjustment could significantly improve access to care and potentially reduce suicide rates. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this issue and any ideas for how we can work toward getting it recognized. #militarylife #mentalhealth #veteranmentalhealth #awareness

As a member of the military you have an existing personal brand crafted for you by the Department of defense and by your branch of service. As a civilian job seeker you need to effectively communicate your brand, new and updated and distinct (for the most part) from your military service. Here are a few tips for doing so: 1. Redefine Your Purpose: 🌅 Fighting an winning America's wars is no longer your reason to get out of bed in the morning. It's time for your to discover and redefine your "why". 🤔 2. Communicate: 📩📱🖥️🤝 Convey to others, in every forum available, what your goals are, what your unique value is and what you are ready to contribute to the world and the workplace in the next 20-30 years. 3. Translate: No many people will understand if I tell them I was assigned to A/2-503 PIR ABN. 😵 Remember only 1% have served, less than that have been in the Army, less than that have been on the base you called home and less than that know the unit designations under that Brigade. Ditch the acronyms, military jargon and unit designations. Speak English, please. 🗣️ 4. Grow Your Hair: Nobody is going to be impressed with your high and tight. In fact it will look very out of place. 🪮 You don't have to become a Dead-Head hippie, but for God's sake buy a comb and learn how to use it. ✂️ 5. Buy A Couple of Good Suits: 🤵🏼You looked sharp in uniform, look sharp in your NEW uniform. And take that promotion photo off your LinkedIn profile and get yourself a headshot with a suit on. Dress for the job you want, not the one you have.💼 6. Perfect the 30 Second Elevator Pitch: Craft, rehearse and perfect your 30 second elevator pitch and get ready to put it to use at events like RecruitMilitary career fairs.
