There are roughly 800 injection molding companies in the United States. Specialties and regions change, but when it comes right down to it, U.S. manufacturers in search of an ideal domestic molding partner are in for a time-consuming task. Often all it takes is focusing on the molders’ engineering teams to find top contenders. That sounds biased coming from a VP of Engineering, but it’s true. The experience, capabilities, and value-adds engineers bring to the table often tell the tale of a molder’s competencies and partnership potential. The reason is pretty simple. Engineering teams are usually involved in a project from its earliest phases through production. That means they set the standards for quality and performance – and some do it better than others. Exemplary engineering teams can shoulder the responsibility of getting defect-free parts and products to market efficiently because they: - Execute project turns in every phase of development and manufacture with speed and precision - Apply knowledge from years of practical experience to align product solutions with project needs - Approach project management holistically to ensure a clear roadmap to successful program implementation and outcomes - Guide collaborative decision-making to keep cost and quality in line with project parameters and expectations - Focus on DfM analysis and manufacturing optimization to consciously and proactively design plastic products that minimize retooling, defects, or other costly rework What have you learned about an injection molder based on the proficiencies and education of its engineering team? Polymics was grappling with product sticking issues during the molding process, which was impacting their productivity and increasing operational costs. They tackled the problem head-on with Tuff-Kote Mold Release. “I cleaned the mold and applied Tuff-Kote Heavy Duty Mold Release. With just the first application, I was able to produce over 200 shots with no sticking issues whatsoever. [The Tuff-Kote] product performed better than expected. Critical Water Infrastructure Issues Population growth, extreme weather, and aging infrastructure are increasingly challenging local water systems across Texas.  The recent developments in Odessa highlight these issues. After experiencing three citywide water outages over the past three years, the Odessa City Council approved a $25 million budget to replace nearly 200 water valves and 17,000 feet of pipe. This investment aims to bring lasting repairs to the city's decades-old infrastructure. Odessa's struggles are not unique. Hotter weather, drought, and underfunding are taking a toll on Texas' infrastructure, with a recent $1 billion voter-approved upgrade being only a fraction of the estimated $80 billion needed.  As water systems across the state face similar challenges, the efforts in Odessa serve as a crucial reminder of the work that lies ahead.
