Dental friends – a quick addendum to our recent Q2 Dental Revenue analysis. Below is a summary of the ADA HPI’s Survey for Q2 Economic Outlook and Emerging Issues in Dentistry. Although slightly dated (June data), it’s particularly interesting in the context of the Fed’s 50 bps cut last week and yesterdays consumer confidence data.   The key take-aways are as follows: - Confidence: Dentists’ confidence the U.S. economy has been trending upwards for around a year while remaining steady in respect to their own dental practices and the dental sector. - Busyness: ~41% of doctors report they were too busy to treat all patients or they have treated all patients but are overworked (up from 38% in Q1). By contrast, nearly 24% of dentists report they were not busy enough and could have treated more patients. Thirty-five percent of dentists report a balanced level of busyness. - Wait times: In Q2 2024, the average wait time for new patients seeking an initial appointment is 14.7 business days, down from 23 business days in June 2023, but up slightly from 14.6 in Q1. - Recruitment needs: The number of dentists actively recruiting dental hygienists and dental assistants is around the same as it was two years ago. Dentists continue to say recruitment is extremely challenging, although to a lesser degree compared to one year ago. In the context of the dental industry, the rate cut represents a potential double-edged sword. 1.      Lower rates will relieve some pressure for practices and DSO groups who are carrying floating rate debt (as most LBO’s do). Lower rates also make capital equipment purchases more affordable. They’ll also make larger, more expensive cases more affordable for customers (thinking AO4 cases).  2.      Conversely, a 50-bps rate cut could indicate the feds anxiety related to weak employment.  Perhaps they had some insight into yesterday’s consumer confidence numbers that were the weakest since July ’22? A weak employment and consumer confidence environment doesn’t bode well for dental visits and spending, however, it likely means a more favorable hiring environment for practice owners and DSO’s, as well as lower wage inflation.  Net assessment: the rate cut is positive for dental practices and consumers alike, and barring an exogenous negative event or material degradation in consumer sentiment, we’re still bullish on dental industry activity going forward. It will be very interesting to watch the Fed, economic data and the ADA’s Economic survey in the coming months.  Stay tuned...
