Utility rebate programs can help grease the skids toward more LED adoption, according to a recent article in LD+A by Joe Pater, utility solutions program manager for MaxLite. Building owners and end users may be able to put off by the higher first costs of LED lighting. Utilities, drawing on their experience with the CFL market in the late ’80s, ’90s and the past dozen years, realize that they can impact the market by offering a compelling financial incentive to help offset the incremental cost of trading up to LEDs. Also, utilities, in many cases, are incentivized and required by public utility commissions (PUCs) to drive efficiency into the marketplace and reduce power generation costs.
Some utilities are already rebating LED products full force while others are simply waiting for LED costs to come down so the rebate dollars will make a stronger impact.
