Since we originally published a detailed blog on this topic back in August and have been consulting in this realm, we have just added critical information in this updated blog related to non-compliance penalties. 🌍 American Water’s 2023 Sustainability Report: Key Achievements in Environmental and Social Responsibility 🌍 American Water has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, highlighting significant strides in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate governance. Here are some key achievements: 🔹 Water Supply Resilience: Enhanced the Monterey Peninsula's water supply without harming marine life through the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project. 🔹 Employee Health and Safety: Achieved a 75% reduction in workplace injuries since 2018, with an OSHA Recordable Injury Rate of 0.85 in 2022, twice as good as the industry average. 🔹 Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity: Launched four Employee Business Resource Groups supporting female empowerment, Black/African American employees, LGBTQ+ employees, and caregivers/disabled employees. While California has rules to protect farmworkers from excessive heat, inspections and citations are significantly down. A bill before the Legislature would make it easier to file workers’ compensation claims for heat illnesses. The backstory: As California confronts the dangers of extreme heat, labor advocates say some workers are underprotected despite the state’s nearly two-decade-old outdoor workplace heat rules. Enforcement is slow, the Division of Occupational Safety and Health is understaffed and hesitance to report poor conditions is widespread among low-wage workers. After a sharp decrease in inspections during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cal/OSHA reports show the agency hasn’t returned to its pre-pandemic heat enforcement levels.
