This means AI programs are already designing custom prosthetics, enhancing the quality of your CT scan, tailoring your treatment plan based on genetic history, to potentially* streamlining the prior authorization process. Shout out to #thethoughtfulco for last week’s “Powerfully Negotiating Your Value” webinar organized by Women in Bio (WiB). The webinar provided valuable reminders/insights that applies in and beyond the marketplace for me. Example for each of these respectively: 1. If you do not know what you want, don’t expect anyone else to know either. 2. People still associate women with family and men with career Per the 2nd point, you might want to check out Harvard Implicit Association Test  https://lnkd.in/gxqPNZbb. This test apparently measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to report. The IAT may be especially interesting if it shows that you have an implicit attitude that you did not know about. There are tests for different life topics. So how did I get to know about/connect with WiB ………………..BNT’s Women+ ERG of course. 😊. So, I encourage you to join an ERG if your company has one you can actively participate in that aligns with your goals!

Here is an interesting article by J. Kelly Byram, MS, MBA, ELS on the environmental impact of AI. This phrase from her article is quite telling, "In other words, AI models, including the ones being developed for health-care applications, create substantial negative externalities—pollution and a large carbon footprint—that contribute to climate change."

Something I’ve been struggling with at work (more than usual) lately is people addressing me by my last name. We all have the same email format (first name last name), my emails have my signature, and you can also check MSTeams. Yet this one team has consistently called me by my last name. How would you address this issue? Comment below!

...or maybe not that much. For one thing, there is a social desirability bias: given that the ICER has successfully positioned itself in the US as the arbiter of "scientific pricing", industry peeps are unlikely to answer that their reports are totally irrelevant - it would sound retrograde. And the other thing: it is possible to find interesting tidbits in an ICER report, while not actually using their calculations to drive (net) prices. I recall an earlier survey (and alas, not so precisely that I can provide a reference) that described exactly that: "useful backgrounder on the disease, patients' views, extant clinical data in the space, etc. - but not interested in their modeled prices". In the survey excerpts presented here, note the soft language: "identify concerns", "get a sense of" and the mushy "inform". Things only come into focus with the last question, pertaining to "changing formulary coverage". Pray tell! I look forward to the full survey. #drugpricing

Black people represent 6% of the Biotech workforce, but 14% of the US Population. Quite clearly there is a disconnect. Asian people represent 22% of the Biotech workforce, but 7% of the total US populations. Another disconnect… well, maybe. Biotech is centered in hubs across the US, the most prominent being: 1.      San Francisco bay Area 2.      Boston-Cambridge 3.      San Diego 4.      Los Angeles 5.      BioHealth Capital 6.      New York/New Jersey 7.      Research Triangle 8.      Greater Philadelphia 9.      Seattle 10.  Chicago The demographic makeup of these communities is completely different than most other parts of the US. But, when we talk about Chicago, we aren’t talking about the city, its Cook and DuPage Counties (which yes, does include the city). So, as we look more closely at the counties within these hubs, a demographic makeup becomes clearer. But, we can’t let larger cities like NYC and LA sway the numbers, when they have a fixed employee count. So, we must also take into consideration the number of employees employed in each of these hubs, so that we can apply the appropriate weights to the demographics. Now, we are cooking. As we look through the data, gathered from census and biotech industry sites, you begin to see the demographics that the biotech industry pulls from begin to change. Asians, while 7% of the US population, are 16.7% of the population in the employee count weighted demographic splits. We are no longer looking at a 15pp variance between the US population and the Biotech population, but 5.3pp. But, there is no escaping it. Even here, after diving into the data, we still have a representation problem. Blacks, 14% of the US population, are 13% of the weighted population, showing significant underrepresentation of Blacks within the Biotech industry, which is at 6%, or a -7pp variance. This is a well-documented problem, with real data to show just how significant the issue is, but in terms of solving the issue, this is where things get hung up. But there are tangible steps that can be taken. From a college recruiting perspective, we must break outside the norm of looking to Harvard and Northwestern for fresh talent, especially in the light of data on admissions post the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action. Harvard, for example, saw a 4pp decline in Black admissions. MIT, even more drastic, saw an 8pp decline in admissions. There is no reason, beyond well-entrenched beliefs that its Harvard or bust, that we wouldn’t recruit heavily from Howard or Moorehouse for top talent. But here we are, in a world of anti-DEI initiatives taking hold in states across the county, with a problem that requires a holistic DEI approach to solve. #dei #recruiting

Last week, the California Senate passed unanimously health AI bill (SB1120) that would ensure certain patient and provider protections around prior authorization and AI. I'm encouraged to see states moving forward with legislation protecting patients, but here we see the limitations around even defining AI (algorithms, software, etc) and scope of AI models in health care (physician oversight language of AI algorithms was also removed from this bill before passage). Below gives a good overview of the current landscape of AI health bills and what happened in California last week.
