The 2023 Progress Report for the Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan for the United States: A Roadmap to Elimination (2021–2025) is in! In FY 2023, the United States continued to make progress and was on track to meet or exceed 2025 targets to reduce acute hepatitis B infections, increase the rate of hepatitis B “birth dose” vaccination, and reduce the rate of hepatitis C-related deaths. Despite this progress, the United States is failing to meet 2025 targets and is moving in the opposite direction to reduce acute hepatitis C infections and reduce hepatitis B-related deaths in disproportionately impacted populations. As we commemorate World Immunization Week, we recognize the critical role of local manufacturing and cooperation in ensuring vaccine equity worldwide. The DCVMN members and Network have been at the forefront of this effort, making immense contributions to vaccine production and distribution. Our members have worked tirelessly to manufacture vaccines locally, leveraging their expertise and resources to meet the needs of their communities. DCVMN has served as a vital platform for collaboration and partnerships, facilitating connections between DCVMs and international organizations, funding agencies, and other stakeholders. Together, we have stimulated production and supplied vaccines to more than 170 countries, with a manufacturing capacity exceeding 14 billion COVID-19 vaccines. This remarkable success underscores the power of cooperation and collective action in addressing global health challenges.  This success can also be attributed to immunization drives spearheaded by governments and the WHO, supported by scientists, healthcare workers, civil society, and volunteers. These efforts have led to historic milestones, including the eradication of smallpox and the elimination of two out of three strains of polio. It is a triumphant demonstration of what science, determination, and international cooperation can achieve. A new clinical study has begun enrollment in the Democratic Republic of Congo to compare the safety and immune response of our #mpox vaccine in children 2-11 years of age versus adults. Results from this study, partially funded by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), could support an extension of the current approval of MVA-BN to include children from 2 years of age and older. Last month, the WHO prequalified the vaccine for adolescents 12 to 17 years of age, adopting the recent approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for this age group. Paul Chaplin, President & CEO of Bavarian Nordic, said: “Children remain highly vulnerable to mpox infections in the ongoing outbreak in Africa, highlighting the importance and urgency to broaden the access to effective vaccines that can be safely administered to this young population.
