Really exciting news out of the Oracle Healthcare Summit in the US this week. Oracle Healthcare is promising a new #EMR “built from the ground up” to be released in 2025 and embedding #AI across the entire clinical workflow. Seema Verma told the conference that the new platform was not “a refurbished EHR”, saying that “in this day and age, you can’t leverage modern technology by bolting new innovation to something built in the 1990s”. This is spot on and what many in the #digitalhealth community have been saying for some time. We need a #nextgenEMR designed to embed AI across the whole workflow with modern tools for automation, documentation, and tasking that uses conversational AI to navigate and create tasks and documentation, to drive down the #clinicianburnout. 100% agree with her statement: “One of today’s most important and widely used healthcare technologies, the EHR, has not lived up to its promise.'' The fact that 52% + of U.S. Citizens have “healthcare consumer choice” should rattle the cage of the healthcare marketplace. Now that our HIT industry has spent nearly 40 years figuring out how to effectively pass data between sites, settings, and institutions of care (and while that journey isn't completely over, we're well on our way), we can finally turn and look farther down the road and consider what's next. In my view, advancing process consistency, agility, and change is that horizon. The BPM community is focused on that challenge, and having recently transitioned into HL7 as HL7 BPM, is squarely trying to take this on. With today's press release, HL7 is truly open-for-business in this space. Thanks to the OMG for nurturing this work along and for HL7 for having made our next home for this effort. Generative AI is transforming healthcare, and we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. 🚀 I had the opportunity to attend an insightful #HLTH2024 session featuring Daniel Yang, MD, VP of AI and Emerging Technologies at Kaiser Permanente, Parminder Bhatia, Chief AI Officer at GE HealthCare, Bianca Diana Anghelina, Founder of AILY LABS, and Rohan Ramakrishna, MD, Neurosurgeon and Co-Founder of Roon. Here are some standout insights: 🔹 AI to Alleviate the Supply and Demand Problem Dr. Yang emphasized that the traditional 1:1 clinician-to-patient model is not sustainable with the growing demand for healthcare services. "We’re not going to train our way out of this problem." AI is key to augmenting clinicians, moving toward a 1:Many model, empowering patients to self-manage their care with enhanced support. 🔹Unlocking Data to Drive Proactive Care Parminder shared that 90% of health data remains untapped. With AI, we can unlock this data to move from reactive to proactive care, improving patient outcomes and making healthcare more efficient. 🔹 Integration is Key to Success Rohan Ramakrishna emphasized the need for AI to seamlessly integrate into clinical workflows, using EHR in-basket management as an example. While AI can improve these processes, the technology still has work to do in minimizing errors and ensuring clinicians can rely on it for better patient care. 🔹 AI Enhancing the Patient Experience Kaiser Permanente's deployment of Ambient Scribe to over 25,000 doctors has not only eased administrative burdens but also improved patient satisfaction. Patients reported feeling more transparent communication and greater insights into their clinical care. This AI tool has allowed providers to refocus attention on the patient, strengthening trust in the care process. 🔹 Trust in AI is Critical Trust also continues to be a recurring theme. As Daniel Yang said, "Explainability is a proxy for trust—if we understand how AI works, we trust it." Transparency, particularly in clinical settings, is crucial to earning patient trust. Rohan Ramakrishna echoed this by stating that radical transparency is a must when deploying AI in healthcare. John Kell's recent article in Fortune, "The best investment opportunities in AI for health care right now," provides incredible insights about the challenges of healthcare data and how it impacts the advancement of #ai. Three out of every four leading health care companies are experimenting with generative AI or attempting to scale it across their business. What are they creating and why? Venture capitalist Deena Shakir asks founders if they "are aiming to solve a technology problem or a clinical adoption problem". Solving existing problems will speed decision making and improve data quality. The Deloitte report:  “Navigating the Emergence of Generative AI in Health Care” shares some of the data challenge in health care. Hey Digital Health Leaders, would love to hear your thoughts on this article from EY. They argue that Digital Health ROI remains elusive because of siloed data, siloed tracking and narrow local patient metrics. Another argument for #TEFCA to bring measurable empirical ROI to care settings, payers and Digital Health? "Health care executives are integrating digital health but not seeing the ROI. Despite the majority investing in digital health solutions, the industry reward has acted as a paradox. Eighty-six percent of respondents acknowledge the potential cost reduction through digital health solutions; however, 7 in 10 have yet to see any ROI to date. Fifty percent of health care executives believe this constrained ROI is amplified by siloed tracking metrics, making it difficult to successfully monitor tech’s initial cost value to the health care practice."

I had the honor of participating in an Oxford style debate this week at the Oliver Wyman Health Innovation Summit: “Consumers Know Best, Or Do They?” As healthcare continues to evolve, the rise of consumer point solutions has promised greater convenience and affordability, allowing patients to access care in new ways. It’s exciting to see so many innovations aimed at improving the healthcare experience. However, the question posed was this: Do the convenience and affordability of these solutions deliver better access and health? Or, does an integrated approach—driven by health systems—ultimately drive better outcomes? I believe that healthcare is not just about transactions and convenience; it’s also about long-term, coordinated care for the whole person across the continuum. Consumers need partners to support them in understanding their choices. Integrated systems, like Fairview Health Services, are partners in care. And while technology plays a crucial role, there’s no substitute for the integrated systems that ensure every doctor, every specialist, and every caregiver is on the same page when it comes to the health and well-being of the people we serve. I’d like to thank my fellow debater, Laura Jensen from Amazon Pharmacy, for a thoughtful and insightful discussion on the role of consumer-driven care. There’s no doubt that together, we can find a way to merge the best of both worlds—leveraging innovation while ensuring that the human element of healthcare remains at the forefront.
