What is the future of Al in Nonprofit Development? This year's Association for Healthcare Philanthropy conference left me with some thoughts on the future of Al and its role in development. One moment, in particular, was when the keynote speaker posed a bold question to the room, asking, "Who is worried that Al might take your job?" Interestingly, not a single hand went up among the hundreds of confident professionals present. Al quickly became a leading topic of conversation. I chatted with an exhibitor who shared that his company is developing an Al that will analyze high-scoring and awarded grant applications to help organizations write the "perfect" grant. This raised two big questions for me: 1. **If every grant is a perfect 10/10, how will anyone get funded? Won't funders just raise the standards or add new steps to differentiate applications?** 2. **If organizations with big budgets can afford this advanced Al, how will smaller nonprofits-those who truly need the funding-stand a chance against perfectly written grants from well-funded competitors?** His response: "Those are great questions, we'll cross those bridges when we come to them." 🥴 This isn't about launching into a "kill Skynet" rant. I firmly believe Al is an incredible tool that holds immense potential to transform our work for the better. However, this exchange made me realize something crucial: in our drive to innovate and optimize, could we inadvertently disadvantage the very populations we aim to help? Al in development should be about leveling the playing field, not widening the divide. As we move forward, I think it's essential that we continuously ask the tough questions and ensure our advancements truly serve the greater good. The 2024 State Scorecard on Women’s Health and Reproductive Care from The Commonwealth Fund has some startling insights into geographic disparities and identity-based inequities. It’s interesting to see the red state, blue state differences. Looking at this, it is hard to deny the public policy context that creates conditions for health, wellbeing, and quality of life or illness, disease, and early death. Lastly, the Dobbs decision is life-threatening. #healthequity #publichealth Scorecard Highlights *Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island top the rankings for the 2024 State Scorecard on Women’s Health and Reproductive Care, which is based on 32 measures of health care access, quality, and health outcomes. The lowest performers were Mississippi, Texas, Nevada, and Oklahoma. *Deaths from all causes among women of reproductive age — 15 to 44 — were highest in southeastern states. Causes of death include pregnancy and other preventable causes such as substance use, COVID-19, and treatable chronic conditions. *The highest maternal death rates were in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Vermont, California, and Connecticut had the lowest rates. Nationally, rates were highest for Black and American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women. *Mental health conditions are the most frequently reported cause of preventable pregnancy-related death, including deaths by suicide and overdoses related to substance use disorders. States that screened for postpartum depression at the highest rates also had lowest rates of postpartum depression. *Among women of reproductive age (ages 15–44), those in Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma were uninsured at the highest rates; those in Massachusetts, the District of Columbia, and Vermont had the lowest uninsured rates. Women in states that had not expanded Medicaid eligibility were among those most at risk of lacking coverage. *The U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. A new brief from the Kaiser Family Foundation details racial and ethnic disparities in mental healthcare. Black and Hispanic adults who report fair or poor mental health are less likely than White peers to say they’ve accessed mental health services.   Increasing information outreach, provider diversity, and decreasing the cost of mental healthcare are just a few ways to make mental health more equitable in the United States. 🌟 Convening on Partnering with Complex Power Dynamics 🌟 Thursday, November 21 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM Pacific In person in Oakland, CA In this CalAIM era, health care and social service organizations need to partner to address complex health and social needs through a more integrated and people-centered approach to care. These partnerships can often uncover power dynamics that limit effective collaboration and progress towards health equity goals if left unaddressed. During this convening, participants will discuss and address complex power dynamics, including exploring strategies for power sharing to build and maintain strong partnerships and developing skills for “power with,” like shared agreements, feedback loops, and accountability. Participants will leave the convening inspired to deepen their understanding of dynamics in existing and new partnerships, all in service of improving effective coordination across California’s health care delivery system to advance health outcomes and health equity. Leading the session will be two experts in quality improvement, health care partnerships, and power building: Hunter Gatewood and AddieRose Mayer, MPH. The event is hosted by the California Improvement Network (CIN), a learning and action network sponsored by the California Health Care Foundation and managed by Healthforce Center at UCSF. Community — I know that the outcome of this election is tough for many of us, but it only reinforces the need for real change at every level—including our local communities. We’ve seen how policy can affect everything from healthcare access to reproductive justice to environmental health, and that’s why I’ve been reflecting deeply on what I can do to ensure we are fighting for justice, not just through advocacy but by becoming part of the decision-making process. We need leadership that understands our needs and is willing to fight for sustainable change on the ground level. I’m committed to continuing the fight for Black maternal health, clean water, and environmental and reproductive justice, and I believe that in the coming months, we can work together to make those changes a reality. #policychange #foodjustice #reproductivejustice #blackmaternalhealth #environmentaljustice #infanthealth #healthequity

September 15 is the last day to submit feedback to The Interagency Coordinating Committee on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities (led by the Administration for Community Living) on Aging in the United States: A Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging: Report to Congress. CEJC applauds the plan for addressing elder rights. But to eradicate ageism and reduce disparities among elders, we urge the Committee to 1) Elevate "elder rights and elder justice" measures by consolidating them into a single section, 2) Acknowledge older Americans as “rights holders,” as opposed to passive recipients or users of services and supports, and 3) Expand the list of rights that older Americans hold to emphasize their diverse life experiences of older Americans and the obstacles they face. They include: a.    Equal access to protections against abuse, neglect, and exploitation. b.    Long-term care consumers' right to receive care in the least restrictive and most integrated settings possible. c.    Nursing home residents' rights to visitation, engagement with their communities, and protections against illegal evictions and chemical and physical restraints. d.    Older crime victims' rights to restitution, compensation, and services to keep them safe and make them “whole.” e.    Older incarcerated people's right to request “compassionate release” when they are approaching the end of their lives and help in reentering their communities. f.     All older Americans' right to execute advance directives to ensure that their choices are respected regarding their end-of-life care and legacies, and to preserve the intergenerational transfer of wealth. g.    The right of older Americans who lack decision-making capacity to have trustworthy surrogates to act on their behalf, including public guardians. h.    The right to protections against age-based discrimination in housing, health care, and the workplace, and recourse when their rights are denied. i.     The rights of Americans under guardianship to maintain their basic rights and civil liberties to as great an extent as possible. #elderjusticecal #elderjustice https://lnkd.in/gEVa_3Y6

“Those who have been systematically excluded from philanthropy are pushing funders to rethink their approach to disrupting inequality. To help shift deeply rooted power dynamics, foundations must ensure that historically marginalized communities set the agenda. They also need to make clear to established groups that they share or cede power to more diverse voices, just as funders must diversify their own ranks. It is worth stating the obvious: this work demands that foundations move beyond the typical “add and stir” approach to women or people of color or rural or disabled or LGBTQ+ people, which imagines that simple (and often symbolic) inclusion is all it takes to solve a deep-seated problem. Being attentive to power can be complicated, but some parts are straightforward. Funders can think about how they structure convenings and be intentional about who is invited and who is speaking. Foundation staff can compare their grants: Who gets more money? Who gets less? Who gets none? And foundations can build these considerations into their strategic work. Finally, foundations must hire people with less elite backgrounds and more diverse experiences to become program officers.”
