Even during the offseason, the NFL makes noise. Per reports, ESPN will take over the NFL Network while “the league gain an equity stake in the family of networks." Now, I don't think ESPN needs to augment its talking heads + highlights package with more talking heads + more highlights + old games no one really watches. Not sure if that is much of a win. BUT… The NFL will presumably own part of ESPN, ESPN+ and Sports-Hulu (and no doubtably impact ABC's MNF) AND offload all the production capital expenditure of having to run the NFL Network in a deteriorating cable environment. That's a win right there. https://lnkd.in/gk_cwgjb hat tip: Lee Kyle Gaither

Biggest media story of the year: the explosion in women’s sports. The combination of big stars emerging in soccer and basketball with the need for live content for streaming services should drive huge growth. Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority - LVCVA recently announced, on social media, they would be sponsoring each player on the Las Vegas Aces roster with a $100,000 sponsorship. News of this broke with players and fans elated at the news, but almost immediately the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) announced they were investigating the deals. “We did this the right way. We’re happy to answer any questions they have,” said Steve Hill, LVCVA President and CEO. Sponsorship deals are completely in-line with WNBA CBA language and some players have deals with various companies in excess of the $100,000 payment from LVCVA. The issue could lie with the prohibition in the CBA where it is forbidden for teams or team affiliates to coordinate with third parties to “agree to pay compensation for basketball services (even if such compensation is ostensibly designated as being for non-basketball services) to a player under Contract to the Team.” In recent years the Aces have been investigated by the league multiple times, so this is nothing new for the team. If this investigation shows the payments to be real sponsorship deals as opposed to pay-for-play, then it will only be a matter of time before more tourism boards step up in various cities to do similar deals. Just like any business starting up discoverability becomes most important especially when content is so fragmented. Understanding the streaming space and how to get it in front of the consumer can be daunting and expensive. GameSquare Holdings Inc. has sold 25.5% of FaZe Media to Richard “FaZe Banks” Bengston for $9.5 million. Prior to the purchase, GameSquare owned 51% of FaZe Media and Matt Kalish, co-founder of DraftKings Inc., owned 49%. This now means the company is split between 25.5% for GameSquare and FaZe Banks, with Matt Kalish still owning 49% of the company’s shares. FaZe Banks still has the option to purchase additional shares in the future if he would like to. For reference, FaZe Media has a 12-month revenue of $30 million as of March 31, 2024. GameSquare Holdings still owned 100% of FaZe Esports. Justin Kenna, CEO of GameSquare, mentioned this is in line with the company’s strategy of “reigniting the FaZe brand by returning its founders in a meaningful way”.
