It's much more complex than many people think. But I don't need AI to create content, I need it to help solve critical, complex world issues, and I need it to replace the mundane manual labour that humans don't want to do. Leave art to the humans. Art is human connection. And, content is human connection at the core.

Nearly every story is about the OS's value as it relates to capturing share for a company's e-comm sales, driving ad revenue, or shortening and simplifying programmatic supply paths, as if viewers care about any of this. How about a competition between OS's that is focused on the best damn viewer experience and making navigation and discovery across all my apps much easier? Until then, the clear loser in all of this is the viewer. PS - I'm not saying there shouldn't be a clear path to monetization via ads and otherwise, it's what pays the bills after all. I'm saying that it needs to START with prioritizing the consumer experience above all, and the rest will follow.

Overview: Publishers are facing down the latest existential threats - the one-two punch of GenAI scraping and SEO upheaval - with a blend of grit and resignation, like the heroes in a post-apocalyptic desert epic (“Mad Max: The Open Web”). Overheard: “Is it even organic traffic anymore?” OUT: Metered paywalls. IN: Dynamic paywalls Also IN: Knowing thyself and focusing on thy niche. Exhibit A - Punchbowl News via founder Anna Palmer: “Capitol Hill is not the sexiest place, but billions of dollars go through that building.” The brand has 100% penetration on the Hill, a list of 180K, and rev that's +100% YoY. Heck. Yeah. Exhibit B - Axios via CRO Jacquelyn L. Cameron: Even as the overall news audience is “splintering into different bubbles,” the brand's dogged focus on “Smart Professionals” and “influencing the influencers,” is working: Fourth quarter is closing the gap of a tumultuous CY24, and she reports 3X as much revenue pre-booked for 2025 today, as it was in Sept 2023. This article in New York Magazine, "Drowning in Slop" discusses the flood of AI-generated, low-quality, synthetic content designed to generate a "quick hit" - i.e. "slop." 🛫While there aren't any travel-specific examples cited in the article, we all know that the travel sector is particularly vulnerable to this "slop factor." We're all guilty of optimizing our sites for SEO-bait stories (🤚🏽I know I am). ♻️But as it gets easier to churn out listicles and the garden-variety "Top 10 Things to Do in [INSERT DESTINATION NAME]," it becomes more difficult to cut through that noise and reach your audience. 🌲But rather than chasing trends or pumping out high volumes of surface-level content like everyone else, we need to invest in content that resonates—well-researched, cited stories, featuring real people, real photography— highlighting the essence of our destination. This content also needs to cut deeper and answer complex, nuanced questions that AI can't duplicate. And it requires a sustained engagement strategy that doesn't just rely on SEO-optimized pages. This is one way to rise above the "slop" and create lasting value. Love to hear your thoughts. If you have even a passing interest in AI or web publishing, you need to see this: https://lnkd.in/euq9VgaY Here's the TL;DR: From 2023 to 2024, the web publishers who maintain the most critical sources of information used to train AI systems have restricted their data. Heavily. A full 28% of the most actively maintained and important data sources are now restricted via robots.txt. As for restrictions based on Terms of Service, the same important set of web publishers have now restricted a collective 45% of the data that used to be freely available for training AI systems. A quote from the study's abstract to illustrate the potential impact of this: "If respected or enforced, these restrictions are rapidly biasing the diversity, freshness, and scaling laws for general-purpose AI systems. We hope to illustrate the emerging crisis in data consent, foreclosing much of the open web, not only for commercial AI, but non-commercial AI and academic purposes." AI companies have started paying for some of the data they used to have free access to. I'm sure the ones with staying power will figure it out. (Plus, paying publishers for their data/info is the right thing to do, in my opinion.) But I'm concerned about the last part of that quote: "... non-commercial AI and academic purposes." It's a data access question. If the data is fully restricted and expensive to use now, non-commercial, academic research — the stuff that can be pretty important to society at large — now has a big obstacle to overcome when doing large-scale research that relies on web data. Add this to the growing list of concerns surrounding AI, LLMs, and related items/issues. We're going to have to answer these questions — and the sooner, the better. #AI #LLMs #WebPublishing #Content

If you are a man writing a newsletter and you compile a list of links to thought leaders on a specific topic—say, AI or marketing attribution or SEO or whatever— make sure to include at least one take by a woman or nonbinary person. Every time. It's basic editorial equity. If you cannot find any women or nonbinary people writing about the topic of your choice, ask yourself why. (Is it because you didn't bother to look outside your own filter bubble for takes?) I'm always bemused with how many men publicly declare their feminism, then talk over, forget to link, don't bother to read, or straight-up don't include an equal amount of women in their professional media diets. I don't hold it against you, but I notice. The trend of men not bothering to acknowledge the ongoing contributions of women remains especially problematic in exec-level tech industry thought leadership.

A big shoutout to David and the team at ThoughtLeaders for letting me use their recording studio ThoughtLeaders uses data to help brands connect with top #creators and leverage the power of content through sponsorships…. their platform analyzes YouTube and podcasts to uncover insights on the content that billions of people across the world are consuming every day I was introduced to their #founder and CEO David Tintner some time back, and finally had a chance this summer to connect with him on numerous occasions As someone who is adjacent to the creator economy (along with spending time in the Startup Nation, and being exposed to a lot of the tech powering this growing industry), it has been fascinating to uncover just how many startups and professionals are active in the space here It’s no secret that monetization is a challenge for most creators, and while the promise of the platforms for creators to fully capture their earning potential when producing regular content has (for the most part) not been fulfilled. Though to be honest, different creators have different financial goals… so I am a bit hesitant to throw out a figure about the percentage of creators who are actually “making money”, but saw this really interesting quote on LinkedIn which stated that: “There are currently ten times more paid content creators in the United States than the total number of police officers, doctors, and lawyers in America combined” I really like what David and his team are doing in working with both creators and brands… as this industry is still in its nascent stages, and in a bit of a Wild West phase 🤠 The next Hollywood? Maybe… but right now there is A LOT of noise, and we need guides like this startup to find the signal Their office also became a hub for the growing creator community here (I think Israeli LinkedIn "thinkfluncers" from the tech space are the most interesting), in hosting meetups, and opening their awesome podcasting studio to the community The community is growing, and like every tech vertical here, a strong community is one of the keys to entrepreneurs’ success, but in this case it’s not just startups, investors, and ecosystem partners, but also creators themselves, who are part of this community Professionals becoming full time creators is a global trend, but where the country is best positioned is with startups like David founded… the tech and people who support these creators Also, their office has become a bit of a creator economy hub as Linguana, an AI global monetization solution for content creators, which is providing an avenue to localize, distribute and monetize their videos globally, also shares the office space (P.S. be on the lookout for an article this month I am writing about the creator economy… if you’re an Israeli startup focused on solving problems in this space I’d love to talk, feel free to ping me directly, or tag relevant people in the Comments) #creatoreconomy #thoughtleadership #contentcreation

2025 will be the year the A.I. HYPE BUBBLE bursts in the podcast industry. That's my borderline edgelord prediction on the latest episode of The Podglomerate's Podcast Perspectives with Jeff Umbro. Don't get me wrong, there are some useful tools for streamlining workflows. But anything that purports to replace the element of human insight and creativity in audio has been WILDY mediocre. And that's just gravy. As I told Jeff: "The more A.I.-generated hokum that’s out there, the more my work… MY HUMAN INSIGHT… is going to stand above the noise." The ad industry loves to feign offense at terms like "surveillance advertising," but as I told Ryan Barwick // Marketing Brew, as Palantir Technologies pitches its AI Platform to media agencies, it's "increasingly difficult to tell where one industrial complex begins and another ends."
