Ads are different on podcasts - they work better. Jeff Ulster has an excellent summary of the arguments. Commercial TV has allowed a total ensh*ion of the experience as accountants try to figure out just how much they can push us before we leave the medium (the same goes for commercial radio). Pods have had a different ad culture - and if they stay protected, we are in good shape as an industry. But - the forces of darkness are gathering. I have noticed some of my favourite shows (talking about you Scott Galloway) now have 3 minute or more ad blocks. I used to enjoy his reads on shorter ad stacks, but now I skip them. I'm hooked on the show, so likely some algo will tell his people they could even do more, but at some point, it makes me resent the ads I do hear before hitting the skip button, which undermines the special power of podcast ads. Since pods are great at delivering niche audiences, it makes the case for branded content even stronger. You can gather a few thousand fans a day/week who care about your area of subject expertise and, since they are often spending 20-30 minutes per episode with you, create a different kind of relationship. THREE (3) REASONS LOCAL TV NEWS IS THE MOST TRUSTED & VALUED By Hadassa Gerber In a year of the unpredictable, where a presidential election can be rearranged in the blink of an eye, hurricanes can make their entrance in the unprecedented month of June and the economic outlook weighs heavily on consumers – audiences may wonder where to turn for consistent, reliable news. A recent study commissioned by TVB and conducted by Dynata sheds light on just how crucial local TV news remains in the daily lives of its viewers across America. The study, which surveyed over 3,000 respondents, unearthed several compelling insights that underscore the pivotal role of local broadcast TV in people's lives: A Trusted Source Local broadcast TV was the most trusted news source while social media was the least trusted. Whether someone is experiencing severe weather, following a sports team, or tracking a key election race, most respondents turn to local broadcast TV news to keep them informed. The study also found that 76 percent of those who use station websites/apps also consume local TV news on television, highlighting the complementary role these platforms play in viewers' media diets. As several of our studies have shown, it's not "either or," it's "and." Localism: Strong Connection with their Communities Among its viewers, local broadcast TV news is the number one source for news, not just local news, but all news in general. And why is that? Local TV stations have cultivated strong brands over decades, rooted in their ability to deliver news that is not only relevant but deeply connected to the communities they serve. Half of local news viewers select it as being the most involved in their local community. Eight out of 10, specifically cited hat they "want information that pertains to the area I live in" as the top reason for watching local TV. Viewer Commitment and Consistency Further, we found that nine out of 10 respondents watch local broadcast TV news at least once a week with most of them watching daily. They value it so much that 73 percent said they were likely to drop a provider or look for other options if they stopped carrying their local news station. Local broadcast TV news is the lifeblood of local communities. It is unique in its ability to deliver news from a local perspective, foster community engagement, and build enduring trust. Local broadcast TV provides a great venue for advertisers wanting to associate with a trusted, believable platform, to showcase their product and services. RIP Bob Newhart. I used to show this clip in media training sessions... Sometimes, especially when subject matter experts do media interviews, they don't do the important part - preparation (i.e., understanding the assignment), spending time watching previous interviews, asking for interview questions in advance and the other parts of media relations that can prove to be more fruitful than the actual interview itself. Of course, this clip is funny and the comedic timing of Bob Newhart will always be one of my favorite things. #mediatraining

“Which reporters do you know in ________ industry?” 🤦‍♂️ This is a question every PR pro gets from potential clients, and even in interviews for PR jobs. But it’s the wrong question. No reporter is going to cover a story that has no news value, even if you know them really, really well. That relationship might get your email read, but knowing one another won't turn water into wine. Instead of asking which reporters we know, ask how we can frame your stories to give them the best shot at creating the right media relationships that result in meaningful coverage.

Why don't some PR managers for trade shows and industry events share their media lists with qualified people? This philosophical approach lacks any semblance of strategy and makes no sense at all. If an event organizer takes media seriously... ✅ They have a press registration page ✅ They host a media room ✅ They proactively pitch media to attend ...that means they want maximum coverage for their event, right? So when the PR team from an exhibiting company requests the registered media list, why do they shut that down? 🛑 When we pitch the media to meet with our client at your event, the story will naturally include a mention of your event. That's a win for you as much as it's a win for us. Proof: I've managed PR for large-scale industry events and we always shared the list. Why? Because PR people went to work and helped our cause, raising our event's profile by generating valuable coverage that otherwise wouldn't have happened. It throws the doors wide open and practically guarantees maximum coverage. Guarding the event's registered media list is short-sighted and defensive, and it stifles coverage that could drive meaningful success. I'll die on this hill.

Husky Talk continues to grow, and we are having outstanding guests each week. Phil shared his journey, along with breaking news at the end of the episode that Husky fans will be thrilled to hear. Phil is from New Jersey and started playing football a little bit later than most kids. He was a dynamic athlete with incredible speed and a state champion running track in the 110 hurdles. Phil made a decision in 8th grade that he wanted to play division 1 college football on a scholarship and put the work in to make that dream come true. He played varsity football in high school during his junior and senior seasons. Going both ways, he was a tailback on offense and an outside linebacker on defense. He started one game at corner because of his speed and showed his athleticism, as well as his versatility. Being recruited by Delaware, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and the military academies, UConn hiring Skip Holtz as head coach was a big factor in his decision to attend UConn. Also, receiving a full scholarship showed his importance to the future of UConn football. Phil had 3 different position coaches in 5 years which makes it difficult having to prove yourself each time a new guy comes in. He was a scholar athlete and part of the 1998 team regarded the best in UConn history winning 10 games, beating the eventual national champions UMass twice and winning the first play-off game ever against Hampton. Phil was voted a captain by his teammates for his dedication, hard work, and leadership. After his playing career was over, he trained for the NFL but went undrafted. Phil focused on his academics earning a master's degree while working in the athletic department. Athletic Director Lew Perkins surrounded himself with attorneys for advice and they talked with Phil about going to law school. He ended up doing after his time at UConn. Working for the NCAA and other jobs including his current position at North Dakota State, Phil is married with young children now. His 7-year-old is a track star and competing against the top talent in the country. At the conclusion of our show, Phil reveals a new position he accepted and let's just say he is coming back to the east coast.
