Today is #BlackWomensEqualPayDay where the wage gap can cost a black woman nearly $900,000 over her 40-year career. Where the gender & racial wage gap robs black women of retirement security, and threatens black women's ability to save for a home, start a business, and pay off their student loans. Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the day of the year when Black women finally make as much as their non-Hispanic wh.ite male counterparts did at the end of 2023. 💰“Based on ACS Census data, the 2024 wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men is $0.69 (cents).” 💡This is not a day of celebration for Black women but a day for us all to contemplate why this pay gap exists and how it devalues Black women and take action. Compared with other women in the United States, Black women have consistently had the highest levels of PAID labor market participation (this does not include centuries of unpaid labor due to enslavement) regardless of age, marital status, or presence of children at home. However, we are disproportionately represented in some of the most hazardous and lowest-wage occupations in healthcare such as CNAs and home health aides. (This is by design) The average wage across the top ten most common occupations for Black women was $30,200 compared to $80,500 for wh.ite, non-Hispanic men’s ten most common occupations. [source: National Partnership for Women and Families] At the same time: 🤱🏾3 of 4 Black mothers are breadwinners for their families (married or single) 👩🏾‍🎓Black women, one year after obtaining a bachelor's degree, have the highest average federal undergraduate student debt of $38,800 compared to other groups. 🙅🏾‍♂️🙅🏾‍♀️Year after year workplace studies by LeanIn and Mckinsey indicate that Black women are having some of the worst experiences in the workplace. From experiencing all-out racism, microaggressions, gaslighting, lack of promotion opportunities, and access to leadership roles which also impacts their ability to be paid equitably. This is a problem and contemplation is no longer enough it is time for us to move from awareness to action. 🏢Organizations Examine salary parity across gender AND race, make the data visible and work to close the gap Post salary information in job descriptions Remove stigma in sharing salaries Advance Black women to leadership positions Increase wages for caregiver and service-level roles Provide opportunities for front-line staff and those in service-level roles to get the tools they need to move to different areas of the organization Provide good insurance benefits, tuition reimbursement, paid parental leave, child care subsidy Ensure that your culture is psychologically safe for Black women ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿Allies Share your salary with Black women in similar roles Sponsor Black women Urge members of Congress to swiftly pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, and co-sponsor the BE HEARD in the Workplace Act (Links w/more info in comments) 💁🏾‍♀️Black Women Know your worth, ask for it! Y'all doing okay? I really hope so! This past week, I was chatting with a friend about the privilege of Leadership. It was an interesting discussion, especially as each of us talked about our leadership styles. Here's my personal definition of Leadership: Leadership is: Letting Everyone Add Value and Disagree when there's a better idea, Execute a well thought out strategy, Rebound when things don't go as planned, Share in the victories, Have an open door (or Zoom) policy, Include all perspectives, Practice self-awareness because no one wants to be led by a big ego. Check In On Your Black Women Employees Today Today is a reminder that, for many Black women, navigating the workplace often involves more than just their professional skills. They may be feeling unseen, undervalued, or overlooked despite being more than qualified for the work they do. For some, the mental toll of this reality can weigh heavily, affecting their focus, energy, and well-being. It’s important to remember that Black women are more than just employees or sounding boards. They are human beings with their own challenges and struggles, some of which may not always be visible. So, take a moment to check in—show empathy, create a safe space, and recognize that their mental health today may look different. If you don’t hear from them as much or if they seem a little more withdrawn, it’s okay. Give them the grace and support they may need to recharge and feel seen—not just as workers, but as people. #MentalHealthMatters #SupportBlackWomen #EmployeeWellbeing #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture

As organizations strive for inclusivity, it's crucial to examine support systems for Black women employees. They currently face: -Limited promotion opportunities -Lack of connectedness and trust -Burnout and exhaustion -Gate-keeping restricting leadership opportunities Strategies for Support 1. Flexible Work Arrangements: childcare support and flexible hours 2. Mentorship Programs: guidance and advocacy 3. Inclusive Leadership: open communication and diverse perspectives 4. Professional Development: training, networking and career advancement Organizational Accountability 1. Conduct regular equity audits 2. Implement anti-racism policies and training 3. Foster leadership and employee accountability To create meaningful change, prioritize listening to Black women's experiences and address systemic barriers. Implement these strategies to foster inclusive environments where Black women thrive.
