Catalysing collaboration is one way to level up your team from a group of individuals to a group that performs beyond the capacity of its members. I found this practical insight a real gem in a recent Coaching.com webinar from Professor Peter HAWKINS and Dr. Catherine Carr, MCEC, PCC, RCC. As leaders, how about taking a considered step back from 'management-mode' (helping each team member perform their tasks and sometimes doing it for them) to instead look for and create connections that elevate the whole beyond its individuals. A systemic-thinking leader gets curious about where facilitating team partnership could produce a result far greater than mere delegation of personal tasks one by one. Where could collaboration enliven and reengage our teams and their outputs right now? An early announcement about a new thing! This November I will be running a program with Tuck Executive Education at Dartmouth called "Leadership in Disruptive Times: Thriving Through Uncertainty." Here's the overview (and the reason for the foggy picture of the Dartmouth Green!). Technologies are advancing exponentially, lines between industries are blurring, expectations of consumers, employees, and stakeholders are shifting, and global shocks are happening with increased frequency. It is the era of predictable unpredictability, and this constant change places leaders in a thick fog. Data to justify making a decision comes in when it is too late to make a decision. Yesterday’s strengths become tomorrow’s weaknesses. Today, leaders must confront complex challenges that feel paradoxical. Pursue purpose by embracing sustainability and maximize profits by extracting and exploiting resources. Protect the present and create the future. Enable empowerment and autonomy and decisively lead in new directions. Build a high-performance meritocracy and provide equitable opportunities and outcomes. Leadership in Disruptive Times will provide practical tools for leaders to accelerate when the fog of uncertainty descends, turning today’s ambiguity into tomorrow’s opportunity. The program is an online sprint, where in two interactive sessions participants will learn how to: 1. Spot early warning signs of disruptive change 2. Strengthen their paradox mindset, which sees sees "both/and" possibilities instead of "either/or" constraints 3. Identify hidden barriers that inhibit responding to change  4. There are more CEOs leaving than ever before. This piece from MIT Sloan Management Review shares practices that I have found to be practical and meaningful. Usually, CEOs and executives spend more time downloading company performance information with people in town halls. It's important to do that. It's just as important, if not more so now, for leaders to find ways to listen more for collective wisdom from across teams. Set up ways for people to share their business insights, market intelligence and unconventional ideas. Harvest knowledge from across levels to create and grab opportunities that maybe waiting to be discovered. Loved the call to " lean into horizon scanning and sense-making," by Sanyin Siang. Makes so much sense.

What's in your leadership Library? Not your kindle or your nook or on your podcast line up. What printed books are in your possession that help you with leadership? Tomorrow I start leading an annual LeaderShip Cohort for terrific ongoing client partner Oregon Resource Association. In fact, this is the 5th annual Cohort ~ and here are 6 observational thoughts. 1. When you focus on the people in the room, not those who aren't, everyone has a better experience. The size of audience has little to do with possible action and impact. Those present at the present 🎁 and deserve full focus. 2. Experimenting with format variables is highly likely and helpful - i.e. number of sessions, format, length, space. We started with 3 sessions, then 3 again, then 4, then 6 - and this year it's 5. Partially to celebrate the 5th year of the series. The registered students will tell you what's working vocally and behaviorally. 3. Be willing to add a group and perhaps a 2nd session. We added a 2nd cohort group [max 30 per group] the very first year due to enthusiastic response! Same day, 2 different times, everybody in. That may have also boosted further registration. 4. Have a focused area of growth and be sure to build sessions ecosystemically. A theme is another way of stating this: what's the purpose of the gathering for growth? Having a theme jump starts the connection within the group, since the purpose is aligned from the start. Ours is LeaderShip, and this year I've chosen 5 books to utilize for the 5 classes. 5. Enjoy the organic nature of adjustment as you progress. In every class there are revelations! Respond to those and use them to enhance the future classes. Reference them so that people know they're being heard and their contribution is fuel for the group. If you teach online and in person series, what lessons and observations have you found lightbulby?
