As both an Industrial Automation engineer and IT professional, I am seeing firsthand how the manufacturing industry still pretty much completely ignores the risks of Cybersecurity and Information Security. With the increasing reliance on digital and automated systems, it is critical to implement strong security standards to protect both Information Technology and Operational Technology. Without the appropriate measures, manufacturers are leaving themselves extremely vulnerable to threats that could disrupt operations and threaten business continuity. Key Security Standards to consider: - NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF): A practical, risk-based approach to securing IT and OT systems. - ISO/IEC 27001 & 27002: Global standards for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) that help manage security risks. - IEC 62443: Focuses specifically on securing industrial automation and control systems in OT environments. - NIST SP 800-53: Security controls for federal systems that can be applied to manufacturing environments. - CISA Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP): Provides guidelines to safeguard critical infrastructure, including manufacturing systems. - ISO/IEC 27019: Focuses on securing information within process control systems in industrial settings. Understanding and implementing applicable CS and IS standards is key not only for manufacturing companies, but also for equipment and software suppliers to the manufacturing industry. Securing the manufacturing process doesn’t help if it’s easy for unauthorized persons to change machine settings on the automated equipment. Leveraging these applicable CS and IS standards goes a long way in making one’s organization the harder target. And that’s often all that is needed to prevent a security incident. A consultant should empower clients to leverage tools and strategies to lighten their load efficiently. They shouldn’t just hand over tools without guidance, leaving clients to misapply them and end up more burdened than before. This is especially true in 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Without the right guidance, companies can easily get lost in the maze of new technologies and processes, ultimately making tasks harder. A good consultant can be incredibly useful. They bring a wealth of experience and an outsider’s perspective, helping you see blind spots and opportunities you might miss. They provide tailored strategies, situational experience, and ongoing support to ensure your digital transformation is not just a plan but a success story. In 2022 companies spent roughly $60 billion in Digital Transformation consulting, which is around 4% of total spend on Digital Transformation. Even though it may be small, this 4% often dictates where and how the rest is spent. Unfortunately, companies are quick to blame consultants when things go wrong, but it's as much their fault as it is yours. You need to know how to hire them effectively just as much as they need to know their craft. Here is a question I received this week in my inbox -- a very common question I get on driving #digitaltransformation "Walker... how do I convince decision makers that this is what we should be doing, while avoiding the naysayers who are actively working against this type of open innovation?" Attached is part of the lesson slide we used in Step 8 or 9 of Mastermind. It contains the crux of my response to this question. If there's anything I have learned about affecting change in an organization, especially an org with entrenched interests and inefficiencies, it is that you must focus only on what you can control while concurrently winning the results war while avoiding fighting theoretical battles. Change agents are always unpopular in an org before they become popular -- it takes time to affect change... and the only way it happens is by producing results. So... take inventory of what you have control over... it could be something as small as a single spreadsheet... identify other innovators, identify the cavemen (citizens against virtually everything). Build a team with the innovators, avoid the cavemen and do three things before you start. 1. Define your Digital Strategy 2. Define your Digital Architecture 4. Write your Minimum Technical Requirements And then get busy transforming what you have control over... iterate... iterate... iterate... and then let the results speak for the themselves. When someone up the chain asks you, 'How did you do that?' you respond by showing them your three documents and your project notes. And then you're off to the races... this is for all my buddies in "AME" and all the Mfg execs wondering why "#digitaltransformation" isn't producing... (spoiler: trust & empower your AME team, stop spending money on BigX consultants like McKinsey & Company or waiting for perfect) Advanced Manufacturing Engineering or whatever title your company uses... it should be your Golden Age. This is basically the same role I came from at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, bringing new tech into the plants, helping solve problems that plant resources were too stretched to do, running capital improvement projects. Leveraging cool tech that could actually move the needle, not academic exercise. Combination of app expert, problem solver, tech evangelist, intrepreneur in a lot of ways. It was a cool job, and the tools we have now could have made such a difference. These days, it seems this role is often stuck in a quagmire, caught in the crossfire of IT/OT "convergence" and unable to do much other than firefight and debate endlessly w IT, or use machine purchases as a way to sneak #I40 tech in... machines they probably could avoid buying if they could do the data projects they are waiting for... Trust your AME team... they are your SWAT team, they know how to invest practically, they understand the value of standards, they know where the problems are, and they can make shit happen. What good engineers don't do well is stand still. I'm pretty sure there's an analogy to teenagers w a flamethrower... felt close but I couldn't come up w a tagline that didn't sound like arson... feel free to comment w ideas :)
