As we approach the end of 2024 and prepare to welcome 2025, it's a great time to reflect on what we truly need from leaders in higher education. The context for higher ed in 2025 is dramatically different, and Scott Carlson's latest article highlights traits that resonate deeply with me: emotional intelligence and humility. In my experience, these qualities can be challenging to find in higher ed leadership. However, when I have encountered leaders who embody these traits, the lessons I've learned from working with them have been transformative—and they have stayed with me for life. Among the most interesting findings is where district leaders want to apply AI if they have the necessary funding. Currently, 12% report using the technology to analyze assessment data and 10% to identify students in need of intervention. With more funding available, however, the number of district leaders that would apply AI to strengthen how assessment data is analyzed is nearly quadrupled. Western Michigan University 2025 Experience-Driven Learning (EDL) Venture Grants are now open for applications from faculty (or teams with at least one faculty member)! 93% of graduates are already benefiting from these transformational learning opportunities. In alignment with our Strategic Plan, we aim for every student to have the opportunity of this enhanced learning that shapes professional purpose and empowers students. Over this past year, faculty and staff have been hard at work implementing the 22 inaugural 2024 EDL Venture Grants while two dozen other faculty members honed their problem-based learning pedagogy (with PBLWorks) and our renowned Cold Case Program received support with a $200,000 allocation in the state budget. Experience-Driven Learning has taken flight at #WMU! As the higher education sector enters a new era of fiscal challenges, without acting strategically, nimbly and timely, consolidation or closure for many may be inevitable. University presidents comprise a critical role in dictating the future of the sector; many decisions will be necessary, which have outsized implications on the constituents of the institutions they lead. The most deliberate, intentional, open-minded, mission-focused and prepared presidents will lead their institutions to a more seamless integration, ensuring mission continuity, institutional sustainability and improved outcomes for all parties. These decisions will have ramifications that will reverberate across higher education for generations. "In this paper we suggest how the current higher education landscape will require further refinement of competing interests. In addition to well documented demographic shifts, two important trends require more disciplined strategy, policy, and operations. The first is the rapid rise of lifelong learning and non-degree credentials. The second is the shift to online study—the overwhelming majority of lifelong learners, plus 71 percent of graduate and 67 percent of undergraduate students, now study partially or exclusively online."
