Repswear 101…..20yr old construct removals. At Alliance Medical LLC we always try to get imaging at least 3 days before a revision case to leverage our network to identify the hardware. Sometimes, we fail and cannot identify the hardware. So what’s your move? Hope universal removal set can get it out and deal with the docs frustration then?….bring in multiple companies best guess at it?…give the doctor the excuse ahead of time? What would a surgeon prefer? Curious to hear everyone’s play on this. Side note: there are actually a few docs out there that enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to removal obsoleted hardware. Look for specific market verticals to change. Interventional cardiology, interventional neurology, general surgery, gynecology, bariatrics, and urology represent a fantastic state of opportunity of winners and losers over the next 5 years. The dynamics of: -             Venture funding that drives product innovation that has for the most part, exited the large strategics along with R&D budgets being reduced. Reduced R&D budgets impact internal development as well as M&A dry powder. -             Shifting reimbursement guidelines directed at influencing value-based care. Driving evidence-based outcomes that can only be derived from incorporating technologies that at first glance do not make economic sense, but as continued use and workflows are established, the economics do make sense. IN THE RIGHT SETTING. -             The right setting - Changing centers of care from in-patient to outpatient and ASC models and the wide-open landscape for a smaller more malleable environment for technology and digital innovation. -             Healthcare worker careers diverge and are represented appropriately and selected appropriately. The ASC team member will be selected, trained and respected like an Indy Team pit crew. Not as an institutional worker as is the case in a majority of hospital settings. Similar to a startup company mindset versus a large corporate mindset. The great leadership will understand this, design strategies to attract those personas, select them based on assessments, motivations and design in shared rewards of the business. ASC employment will be a lifestyle employment choice. Work with similarly driven and creative team oriented players. The companies that make and sell medical devices and the organizations that provide healthcare services to the consumer will break down into one of two categories. The one's who’s current strategy has been designed for the structure that has been in place to date. And The reconstructionists who are shaping the new market. Game on.

“This is your new Bible” my first boss in orthopedic sales told me many… [cough cough] a few years ago. I mentor graduate students at the University of Richmond - Robins School of Business and they tend to match me with people trying to break into the medical device industry. Regardless of the role they’re looking for, I always recommend “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” I try to read this book at least once every 5-7 years. My mentees typically haven’t read it, but I always tell them every facet of society has its own language. This is particularly true in the medical device industry where you need to be fluent in the languages of medicine and business to succeed. But the language of interpersonal relationships, and knowing how to navigate building and maintaining strong relationships is critical to success in any venture, not just sales. No one succeeds on an island. Are you involved in shaping tomorrow’s brightest minds too? I’m interested in additional reading recommendations, and your most memorable lesson from the literature. I know what cold calling is. I have done plenty of it. It has its place in the life of every salesperson. At the highest levels of selling that I am referencing in this book, a cold call is simply an attempt to sell commitment for more time and an appointment at an appropriate venue. Avoid stand-up calls. Demonstrate to your customer that your request for an appointment is well worth it, then blow their doors off so they will refer you to others.
