As the DOW Jones closed above 40,000 for the first time in its history, Olaolu Aganga recently joined the team on CNBC’s Closing Bell to discuss our playbook in alternatives and current strategic and tactical asset allocation views. Through what many have described as a “supercycle” election year, we see large asset owners seeking out stability in longer-term allocations to alternatives – including private credit and private equity. Typically marked to market at a slower rate, exposure to alternatives can provide important stability through more volatile periods. Balancing strategic and tactical decision making across portfolios is all about assessing risk and return relative to time horizon. Strategically, we’ve been neutral on Europe for some time, but tactically, we’ve been looking internationally to capture opportunities across emerging markets, most recently in China where we see valuation distortion. The future of philanthropy, seems to mirror that perhaps this long-used form of tax evasion and impact washing is losing its appeal with the next gen. Or perhaps there's a growing awareness of the misuse of so many endowments to harm the same communities their missions say they exist to help? Either way, the skepticism is having consequences: "Of the majority that hasn’t donated, 32% say they are skeptical about the impact of philanthropic organizations, 29% say they are overwhelmed by all the options, 16% say they have not considered it, and 9% say they don’t have enough money. But almost half of those who don’t give money will give their time: 44% said they value that kind of contribution more (vs. 31% for Xers and 21% for Boomers. Engagement with an organization is also more important for those Millennials who do donate money, at 68%." #Philanthropy Worth Media Group #Millennials

Four kernels of wisdom about navigating this unpredictable environment from a colleague, Multi-Asset Strategist Adam Berger. As he's written: "Asset owners—both investment professionals and boards—are used to being guided by some core 'rules of thumb.'" What happens when those rules of thumb are being challenged? 1) Allocators should tread carefully around seemingly broken rules and acknowledge the potential for a wider range of outcomes. 2) Asset owners should try to maintain balance in their portfolios so they can achieve reasonable results whether or not the rules are truly “broken” (perhaps the market behavior they expect is just delayed…). 3) Investors should align their portfolio positioning with their long-term confidence in each rule (e.g., there is a value/growth or a large cap/small cap cycle) and the potential pain if their view is wrong. 4) It’s also a good time to reinforce good governance and to review the core beliefs underlying asset owners’ investment policy.
