Pro-tip: Gage Pins just for production (separate from QC lab) ensure quality at the source. Use ones with Black Oxide coating which provide visual wear recognition for replacement during 5S audits. I recommend Vermont Gage's Black Guard™ which is a black oxide treatment that penetrates .000040" - .000060" deep. Besides visual wear indicator, it provides rust and corrosion protection too. We have 2 sets of gage pins for both Go (Plus) or NoGo (Minus) from .005" to 1.00" and the same for Metric too, which comes in really handy! The pin sets on the floor are Class ZZ which means they are .0002" or 0.005mm tolerance and are round within .0001" or 0.0025mm. The gage pins in our QC lab are Class X, meaning they an inch tolerance of .00004" and a metric of . 001mm. Our Lab class X pins are also used as masters to validate measuring equipment every morning too before use and often several more times during the day as well, such as checking linearity of comparators, micrometers, and calipers in QC lab. These round masters simulate a cylindrical part which, unlike flat blocks, can detect uneven wear on the tips of micrometers and calipers. The result is the thin “line” of contact detects uneven face wear better than flat gage blocks with large contact area. Although its origin is lost in the mists of time, best measurement practices call for you to use what industry insiders call the 10 to 1 rule. Gages need to be ten times more sensitive than the tolerance of the characteristic you are measuring. So to properly measure 1.000” ± .005”, which has an overall tolerance of .010”, you need a gage with the ability to measure .001” or one-tenth of the tolerance. Anything less (than 10x) is just a guess! Gaging is an integral part of quality planning simply because you can't make what you can't measure. The types of gages, the frequency with which you use them, and the methods used to assure their suitability should be baked into your control plan, PFEMA, FAIR, and ideally validated with the customer (what's their receiving inspection method?) that brought you the order in the first place. #aerospace #swissmachining #cnc #cncmachining #machineshop #quality

What is the best way to let a buyer know that you are not sure of a current ECD for a part? Machining and programming I've noticed need to be modified through each process sometimes and it adds time to the job if it is a new part. Buyers are persistent at knowing a completion date, which I understand is extremely important, but I don't like having to change a given date due to hold ups through each process. what's your tactic?

Black oxide or blackening is a conversion coating for ferrous materials like these Pew Pew firing pin stop plates we are #swissmachining from heat treated alloy steel ⚙️🔫🖤 In colloquial use, thin coatings of black oxide are often termed 'g_u_n bluing', while heavier coatings are usually termed 'black oxide'. Black Oxide was originally developed in the early 1900's. The process not only applies to ferrous materials, but can also be used for non-ferrous, brass and even copper alloy too! The Black Oxide is a true conversion coating -- meaning it is converting iron to the naturally occurring black iron oxide compound called magnetite. The magnetite is produced through chemical reaction as the alloy is immersed into the specially formulated blackening solution. Dwell times depend on such parameters as base alloy, part density, surface hardness, and nature of the heat treated surface. The Black Oxide conversion will not reduce hardness or affect the dimensional characteristics of the finished part. Producing no appreciable dimensional change, it has been documented to be measured at 5 millionths of an inch. The coating becomes an integral part of the base metal surface and does not chip, peel, crack, or rub off. Black Oxide is considered as a non-sacrificial coating, meaning it offers a limited amount of corrosion protection and generally is specified when dimensional build-up of a more corrosion resistant finish cannot be tolerated. Also the normal black oxide process does not cause hydrogen embrittlement like some painting and plating processes. Fyi, black oxide finish usually improves adhesion of parts prior to painting and lacquering processes too! Here at Acclaim Aerospace in #Georgia, for non aviation projects and parts, we started performing black oxide to MIL-DTL-13924 Class 1 (steel) which significantly cut the costs for our Pew Pew customers and shaves a week or more off lead time for all our deliveries each time too. Black oxide coatings are very durable and can last for years without any significant signs of wear or deterioration... although we still recommend you regularly clean your pew pews -- with a proper pew pew oil not WD-40 ugh! For the first time, local and nonlocal (strongly nonlocal and weakly nonlocal) micromechanics (called computational analytical micromechanics) of random structure composites are presented as a generalized and unified theory of blocked (or modular) structure so that the experts developing one block need not be experts in other blocks. Moreover, during the development of joint software, each block team can make any corrections in their block software at any step of its development, even without informing the partner teams about these corrections. Coordinating efforts to couple these blocks is only required for profitable team interaction. The modular structure of Peridynamic Micromechanics (PM) is a good background for effective collaboration of different teams in so many multidisciplinary areas as PM.

For example, finer grains usually result in lower energy inputs and less aggressive conditions when sintering or melting. Depth gauges and micrometers are invaluable tools for taking measurements of slots, steps, holes, and projections - like this sealing groove on a stainless sensor connection flange we are #swissmachining here at Acclaim Aerospace in #Georgia. Most manual Depth Micrometers have a flat base attached to the sleeve and the measurement rod. The flat base stabilizes the mic on the top surface of the recessed part. The mic also has a spindle that is adjusted by rotating a thimble until the rod/beam contacts the bottom of a hole being measured. When it contacts the bottom of a hole, a reading is shown on the digital display or can be determined manually with graduations along a vernier scale. Digital Depth "drop" Gauges like the one we are using in the picture have a beam or rod that’s fixed to a dial indicator or digital display. The beam usually has a plunger-style flat or rounded or even small tapered contact point on the end which can be interchanged depending on the feature and clearance. When the point makes contact with the bottom of the hole being measured, a reading is shown on the digital display or dial gauge. Another type is Blade-Style. These gauges have a blade that travels into a bore or feature perpendicular to the base. They may have a tip designed for notches or grooves as well as flat contact. There are many other types of depth gauges too, including some for very specialized applications. Unless you work for an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) you may not experience an Integrated Product Team (IPT) review. For those of you who haven’t engaged in an IPT review, let me give you a brief introduction. The designer or design team hold a meeting to review the design concept or progress on an evolving design. During these meetings, attended by different cross functional team members, comments are given related to changes/modifications to address attendees’ design concerns. For example: maintenance may request a design change to increase accessibility to a component for regular maintenance. Depending on the current stage of the design different items are reviewed. Depending on the evolving design stage different GD&T application considerations must be addressed.   In most cases GD&T application is considered at the Critical Design Review (CDR) stage (there are least two design review stages ahead of CDR) in the evolution of the design. In some cases, the GD&T application options are limited at this stage (CDR). So, it’s imperative that GD&T constraints are identified as soon as possible in the design process (before CDR) to avoid problems that could manifest at a later design stage. It’s important to note that these design reviews aren’t for the faint hearted or inexperienced. Sometimes GD&T application has to be addressed at the current stage of the design and can’t wait until CDR. For example: In the case of large format components, the raw material ordering requirements know as lead-time (your material suppliers must place their orders as well) my force you into a GD&T discussion a year more in advance of other component GD&T considerations. The GD&T application decisions, made early in the design evolution, must carry through to the completed design (meaning it must be correct).   The GD&T applications, made for large or multi process raw material components, will drive raw material supplier designs. In many cases the raw material producers must create raw material designs as well. The GD&T application discussions with raw material designers is another step-in design evolution. The GD&T for raw material designs can look very different from what a finished design component GD&T application might resemble. In raw material GD&T you would expect to see unequally disposed tolerance used in profile of a surface, least material modifiers, and datum targets. If you have a manufacturing background, you’re every likely considering the manufacturing processes when defining the raw material GD&T application. So, it’s very likely you will have some back-and-forth GD&T discussion with the raw material designer.   Knowing when to push for and how hard to push for GD&T application comes from experience. If you don’t apply GD&T correctly in the early stages of design development, you will pay the price at the production line.

Nice blog. With 37 years of experience in metrology, I first heard the title "metrologist" in 1987 while serving in the U.S. Navy. I was told that was my title. Now, as a Quality Manager specializing in metrology, I resonate with this blog on the importance of genuine expertise. My role includes maintaining compliance and developing and improving metrological process documentation. Anyone titled a metrologist should reflect a deep commitment to and expertise in metrology.
