The hardcore anti-LCFS contingent has tried to snooker the public into believing that California's #LCFS is bad for the state's electric vehicle market. Rivian, one of the fastest emerging electric vehicle manufacturers in the world, doesn't agree. The EV maker this week published an op-ed in Capitol Weekly voicing strong support for the LCFS and its benefits for wider EV adoption. From the piece, in very simple terms: "In Rivian’s case, our Rivian Adventure Network fast chargers generate credits when they charge EVs on the road, while fleet owners earn credits when they charge our vans and trucks in their depots. Hyundai's Initium concept looks great and could land in dealerships next year, possibly as the next-generation Nexo fuel cell vehicle. SEOUL — Hyundai’s new Initium fuel cell concept previews the automaker’s next-generation design language in a hydrogen-powered crossover that arrives in 2025 as the successor to the Nexo, sporting across-the-board improvements in range, efficiency and power. The new design philosophy, called Art of Steel, emphasizes the malleability of metal for dynamic, artistic body styling, the South Korean carmaker said at its Oct. 31 unveiling here. The Initium takes its name from the Latin word for first or beginning, in a nod to the company’s role as a pioneer of hydrogen powertrain development, an effort stretching back 27 years. Hyundai will introduce the Initium at the upcoming Los Angeles auto show and start sales in the first half of next year. The Initium will top the Nexo in range, performance and interior space, as well as in safety and high-tech features, as Hyundai tries to solidify its position as a global leader in hydrogen technology and make the systems a pillar of its carbon neutrality strategy. The production version of the concept that arrives next year is expected to keep the Nexo name.The production version is expected to get Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen fuel cell system, as hydrogen competitors such as Honda and Toyota work on their own fuel cell updates. Earlier this year, Honda began delivering a new fuel cell version of its CR-V crossover. The CR-V e:FCEV, sold only in California, is the first to use Honda’s second-generation fuel cell module, co-developed with General Motors and assembled at a joint venture facility in Michigan. How Initium improves on the NexoThe Initium’s system targets advancements in power density, durability and cost. The vehicle will be powered by a 150-kilowatt motor, with an expected driving range exceeding 403 miles, based on an unspecified in-house fuel economy scale. That compares with the 380-mile range and a 120-kilowatt motor in the Nexo, on sale since 2018.Power density will exceed the Nexo’s 3.2 kilowatt/liter level and durability will improve 40 percent. Cost will also come down, though not as steeply as the 50 percent drop seen with the Nexo from Hyundai’s first-generation vehicle, the Tucson ix35 Fuel Cell EV that debuted in 2013.

The company's strategic move aims to accelerate the production of electric vehicles, including the highly anticipated Ram 1500 REV and electrified Jeep Wagoneer models. The investments, totaling over $406 million, are spread across the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, and the Dundee Engine Plant. Will autonomous vehicles pick up speed off-road? Overland AI and Potential are pursuing, military, mining, and other off-road applications. These use cases are more compelling because they represent large markets, they are not as regulated as passenger transport roads, and they can address labor shortages. As Alexei Andreev of Autotech Ventures added, "And if you remove people, you immediately get a reduction in your insurance premiums." 25% of North American households have children under the age of 16. That 25% will wish to continue owning at least one household vehicle. A similar percentage needs to carry tools, equipment, pets, etc. in their vehicle. That additional percentage will wish to continue owning a personal vehicle. Another smaller fraction will be concerned about personal preferences, hygiene, etc. These three cohorts are not mutually exclusive but taken together, we will not reduce personal ownership by more than half unless numerous other innovations satisfy the populations I enumerated without them owning a household vehicle. What are those innovations?

The unveiling of the brand's debut full-electric Avenger compact crossover in Japan tests this hybrid-loving market's appetite for EVs. TOKYO — Jeep will consider traditional hybrids as a more cost-effective alternative to plug-ins and full electrics as it seeks to diversify its electrified lineup and tap surging demand for fuel-efficient gasoline-electric vehicles in the U.S. market. The 4x4 stalwart will study options for standard hybrid-electric vehicles, or HEVs, in a range of segments because the technology doesn't require the costly batteries used in plug-ins and electric vehicles, said Matthew Nyquist, Jeep's vice president of global product planning. "Between plug-in and HEV, there's quite a bit of associated cost, as we have the engine and a fairly good-sized battery within the plug-in hybrid," he said. "It's a natural extrapolation to look at HEV, and specifically in markets like the U.S., there's a lot of HEV in multiple segments. So, it's definitely something we would study across all the segments to provide the right price point and the right kind of fuel economy for our buyers." Nyquist's comments came Sept. 26 as Jeep introduced its first full-electric vehicle, the Avenger compact crossover, to Japan as the Stellantis brand tests this hybrid-loving market's appetite for EVs and tries to gain traction in a country where it is the last successful American brand. Executives of Jeep Japan pulled the wraps on the Avenger at a glitzy unveiling on the 46th floor of a Tokyo high-rise overlooking the nation's capital. The new nameplate plays a critical leadoff role in the Stellantis marque's upcoming EV shift, which includes two larger EVs planned for the U.S., the Recon and the Wagoneer S. Those vehicles are expected to eventually land in Japan as well. Hybrid boom Jeep already has a range of plug-in hybrids in the U.S., marketed under the 4xe badge. The powertrain is offered on the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and soon the Gladiator pickup. In Europe, it also offers a mild-hybrid setup called e-Hybrid for the Renegade and Compass. The Avenger is optioned there as a mild or plug-in, in additional to a traditional internal combustion offering. By branching into traditional hybrids, Jeep could catch a wave of U.S. consumer enthusiasm. Automakers across the board, from Toyota and Ford to Hyundai and Volvo, are seeing  hybrid sales zoom in the U.S. as car buyers turn to them as a more affordable alternative to full electrics that are also unencumbered by concerns about range or recharging infrastructure. In the second quarter of 2024, traditional hybrids accounted for about 9.6 percent of U.S. sales, up from 8.6 percent in the preceding quarter, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Plug-ins, by contrast, saw market share increase to 2 percent from 1.7 percent.

Today I want to share the story of one of the startups from the current Beamline Accelerator Deeptech Batch — Heliosync. Founders Bernhard and Martin are developing solar technologies that could change the future of renewable energy! Why is this important? Currently, only 6.7% of energy production from renewable sources comes from solar energy. However, by 2030, half of all energy produced from renewable sources is expected to come from solar energy. At long last, it’s takeoff time for urban aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration's approval this week of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles in the U.S. marks a significant milestone for the burgeoning air taxi industry. eVTOLs promise to revolutionize transportation by offering a faster, cleaner, and more convenient mode of travel, particularly in congested cities. These next-generation aircraft could drastically reduce commuting times and alleviate traffic congestion. What’s really cool is that these new regulations are the first for a completely new aircraft category since the 1940s. They cover many aspects, including design standards, pilot certification requirements, and operational procedures. The FAA has been working on developing these regulations for several years, resulting from extensive input from key industry players, aviation experts, and the general public. This approval is also a major win for the eVTOL industry including companies like Joby Aviation, Archer, LILLIUM GmbH, and GE Aerospace. It's expected to attract a huge amount of investment and speed up the development of commercial air taxi services. Traditional airlines are also embracing the future of flight. Southwest Airlines and Archer are moving forward with ambitious plans to establish eVTOL routes connecting South San Francisco, Napa, San Jose, Oakland, and Livermore, California within a few years. However, there are still some hurdles to overcome. Building the necessary infrastructure, gaining public trust, and ensuring safety are crucial challenges that must be addressed before air taxis begin zipping over major American cities.
