I recently chatted with Dan Mapes, founder and president of VERSES, about the new IEEE P2874 draft standard for Spatial Web Protocol, Architecture and Governance. It promises to unify different world representations across the industrial metaverse, digital twins, and enterprise apps. It could also reduce hallucinations and improve the performance of new embodied AI approaches. U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)'s #SSI (Self-Sovereign ID) grant aims to improve the cryptographic procedures and applications for generating, storing, and managing Internet users’ digital identities. Backed by a two-year, $173,852 NSF grant, computer scientist Nikolay (Nick) Ivanov, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Rowan University’s College of Science & Mathematics and director of the Research Laboratory for Advanced Cyber Systems and Usable Security, is conducting the first systematic study of the usability of Self-Sovereign digital identities’ (SSDIs) interactions, and to develop the first comprehensive inventory of these protocols. #SelfSovereignIdentity #DecentralizedIdentity #DigitalPrivacy #DigitalEquity The planned research aims to advance the SSDI field through a multi-phased approach focusing on usability and on the development of practical communication protocols. A two-stage study involving human subjects is poised to identify usability issues within the SSDI lifecycle, guiding the creation of a detailed inventory of SSDI communication protocols. These protocols cover account management, authentication, authorization, certification, revocation, data provenance, non-repudiation, transactions, multi-party signatures, voting, delegation, one-time access tokens, public key infrastructure (PKI), data oracles, and zero-knowledge data storage and retrieval. The developed protocols will form the basis of the framework that will feature an application programming interface (API) and tools for effective SSDI management. The Biden administration is making a big move to secure US dominance in the semiconductor industry by offering $285 million in federal funding for the development of digital twin technology. Here's what you need to know: 1️⃣ The funds, sourced from the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act, will be used to establish a CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute focused on digital twins for the semiconductor industry. 2️⃣ Digital twins are virtual representations of physical chips that mimic the real version, making it easier to test new processors before production. 3️⃣ The institute aims to create a diverse network to share resources with companies developing and manufacturing both physical semiconductors and digital twins. 4️⃣ The funding will support various activities, including: Operational activities Basic and applied research Shared facilities Demonstration projects Workforce training related to digital twins 5️⃣ Digital twin-based research can leverage AI to accelerate chip development and manufacturing in the US. Interested parties can attend a government briefing on May 16th to discuss funding opportunities. 📅 The CHIPS Act, passed in 2022 to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the US, has struggled to keep up with the capital demand. BIG boost for Illinois to become the nation's quantum hub as Gov. JB Pritzker and Intersect Illinois announced the launch of the Quantum Proving Ground in collaboration with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Currently approved quantum-vulnerable digital signature and key-establishment algorithm standards are now set to be deprecated in 2030 and disallowed in 2035. This and more coming out of the initial public draft of NIST's IR 8547 on the Transition to #PQC Standards. The complexity of transitioning to PQC is difficult to overstate.
