Service Managers & Fixed Ops Directors - when you look at your projections for 2025, how many more technicians do you need to achieve your goals? What level of training do you need them to start at? Our current programs at Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan are ASE MAST & MTST accredited. I am considering adding an ASE MLR accredited program on both sides. (likely a 6 month program & still financial aide eligible) My thought process is - we get them trained on the basics and shop safety - we can get them into the dealerships faster and you can layer on your OEM training and certifications. What do you think?

Anyone in automotive retailing need to read this article from the AADA and Steve Bragg our Lead Partner and Pitcher Partners. It highlights a few of the challenges faced by Dealers and the increased uncertainty in some key areas. But Dealers will be OK as they evolve and adapt, but i am not so sure this time! At present 95% of Dealer costs are fixed because to change this would require the dismantling of 50 years of embedded processes and a religious connection to a retail model which is showing signs of stress (to put it mildly). The gross orgy of the early 2020's is over and nothing in the tea leaves indicates it returning anytime soon, this absorbed the expense increases over that time and still resulted in record profits. Now Dealers are paying 15% or more to open the doors than in 2019. But in 2019 these added pressures on top of expense growth were not present: 1) Consider in 2017 (or 2016) MG delivered 600 cars and in 2023 they sold almost 60,000. Now add BYD, Great Wall, LDV etc etc all wanting some pie. 2) Customers in 2019 were unlikely to be "buried" in a 3 yo vehicle as new prices were not inflated in the prior years as they were in 2020 - 2022. 3) 5 years ago a small % of the workshop was Capped price now it's over 50% for many Dealers and set to go higher, plus increasing tech wages. 4) Consolidation of ownership continues - but volume and size alone won't guarantee a sustainable retail model so how long can legacy structures remain in place and what impact will this have on the market when they change? 5) In 2019 $14,000 gross per employee per month was making 1-2% net profit. In 2024 this Dealer would be unprofitable or marginal at best depending on structure. I totally agree with Wayne Pearson, there is a need for a complete rethink of the retailing model which in my view would have started 5 years ago but for Covid but we are back at this point and the need is even greater. There is lots of work to be done and the retail space is set to undergo more change in the next couple of years than i have seen in my 30 years in the business.

[Compton's Take] Everywhere I look, it seems the sky is falling for automotive dealers. The statistic being spread is that profits have dropped 34% on average. I have a different outlook for dealers... First, that number is an AVERAGE. (We're talking about average? Average? Average?) Second, who wants to be average? World Class Operators are in the top 20% of our industry. Because the number of below-average dealers is so numerous it skews the average. There’s a different mindset between average and world-class: - Average competes; world-class innovates. - Average avoids risk; world-class takes calculated risks. - Average makes excuses; world-class makes it happen. - Average has a scarcity mindset while world-class embraces abundance. - Average is frustrated; world-class is grateful. - Average is problem-oriented; world-class is solution-oriented.
