So many folks in the cyber insurance ecosystem love to host webinars and events on "How to Sell Cyber Insurance." What I find interesting is that, 9 times out of 10, the person chosen to present has never once sat in the retail broker's seat. How the heck do you truly know how to sell cyber insurance? Don't get me wrong... there's plenty to be learned from folks who haven't actually sold cyber insurance that can be used to sell it. The problem is that when you've never sat in a retail broker's seat, you can't really speak to how insureds actually respond. Sure, the strategy of using unsolicited vulnerability scans on prospects sounds like a good idea. You visibly show them a report of vulnerabilities that might impact rating at a few insurtechs. You tell them to address these open ports or whatnot and offer to re-approach the market for potentially better pricing or coverage. Sounds like a great risk management-focused approach to selling cyber insurance. What someone couldn't tell you if they haven't actually done it is that a lot of your prospects are going to be heavily turned off by your strategy. They're going to respond with anger that you ran a vulnerability scan without their consent. Others are going to share the report with their IT people, who will inevitably have their own evidence on why the scan results are wrong or irrelevant. These are things that you won't find out until you actually try it. Unfortunately, there's a lot of people with a megaphone who haven't actually tried the things they're preaching. I'm guilty of this as well! I preached that inside-out underwriting was the silver bullet to cyber insurance underwriting. Once we actually started trying it, there were MAJOR flaws. Carriers couldn't ingest the data, the inside-out tech is geared towards vulnerabilities, so now we just gave underwriters more vulnerability data than they had previously. We were an insurance agency facilitating deep cybersecurity scanning, and we were holding that sensitive internal vulnerability data, etc. Real-world experience always beats theory. You see this with the scam that college has become. Kids graduate and expect great jobs, but no one wants to hire them because they don't know anything that actually provides value in the real world; all they know is theory. All this to say, let's give the megaphones to the retail brokers... the ones actually selling cyber insurance. The ones that have been there and done that! We can learn from lifelong carrier and wholesale folks, cybersecurity folks, etc., but when it comes to "How To Sell Cyber Insurance," the retail brokers like Mercy Komar, CIC, CyRM, MLIS, CCIS got this.
