It doesn't mean you shouldn't grow your team, but you need to adapt your tactics to ensure your message lands. Here are a few strategies I've used in the past: 1️⃣ Keep teams small and agile: Allocate singular resources to areas of expertise, allowing members to stay focused and make swift decisions. Ensure they stay connected to others in the business for consultation. 2️⃣ Utilize technology wisely: Use collaboration tools to streamline communication and keep everyone on the same page. 3️⃣ Regular check-ins: Hold brief, focused meetings to align on progress and address blockers. Have a communication plan with multiple touch points and mediums to ensure your message lands across your business. Four years ago, I took a chance on someone with no experience. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This individual didn’t come from a traditional IT background. They weren’t someone I’d typically consider for a Systems Administrator role. But there was something about our interaction—a sense of curiosity and determination—that stood out. Instead of grilling them on years of IT experience they didn’t have, I asked about their coursework and their approach to challenges. I wanted to find out: 1. Could they problem-solve? 2. Were they resourceful and independent? 3. Had they applied similar skills in their studies? 4. Would they thrive on the team and bring their best self to work? 5. Were they eager to grow with the company? As it turned out, many of the skills they needed to succeed had already been built through coursework, past management roles, customer service, and freelancing. These experiences weren’t “IT,” but they were absolutely relevant. So I hired them. Four years later, even though I’ve moved on to a new role, they’re still with the company—excelling and proving every day that non-traditional hires can be extraordinary hires. Here’s the lesson: Don’t let “lack of experience” be a dealbreaker. Look deeper.
