  • Mentor

    A.I.M (Avon Incredible Mentor)

    - 1 year 10 months

I was a mentor for the incoming freshmen to Avon High School for both my Junior and Senior years there. I created games and activities to make the freshmen feel more welcome to the high school, just knowing how nervous someone can get with a bigger school and more life decisions that are made here. I mentored over 60 people through my two years with the program and made impacts on most every single one through just listening and sharing my experiences with them.

-Noblesville Facade: how did businesses perceive the program and what improvements could be made to the program and downtown Noblesville

-Harrison Center for the Arts: how did they impact the local community around them?

-Roanoke redevelopment: how did Joseph Decuis make an impact on his investments on the community?

-Columbus bus tours: was there an impact on the businesses?

-Tippecanoe market district: are people aware of the districts and do businesses know what district they are in?

-Fortwayne baseball complex: how has the redevelopment of the downtown center grown the community?

We found that with branding, a leader and public and private funding sources, anything can be done to help the community. Each community must adjust to what they are based around and adapt to that. It is tough for a community to mimic each other because each are so different.

When our young people know where they’re going, we all advance. On September 24th and 25th 2019… Imagine the Indiana State Fairgrounds filled with hands-on learning experiences that are designed by individual industry teams to align with what that industry will need from its employees in the near future. Imagine that these experiences exist as the culmination of a Junior Achievement career-readiness curriculum delivered to many of these students throughout their academic experience, beginning in elementary school. Imagine the experience of an 8th grader who walks into these sessions with mostly abstract notions and walks out physically and intellectually activated, with real insights on what industries interest them, what specific jobs are like, and what education is required to do them successfully. The community impact of JA JobSpark and the aligned curriculum will be significant. When a student has a real idea of what they want to do after high school, they are much more likely to stay in school and graduate. And when graduates enter their next phase prepared and motivated—be it college, skilled trade, or national service—Indiana schools pay less to remediate and Indiana employers can draw from a larger pool of workers ready to contribute from day one. These are some big promises to make. But never underestimate the power unleashed by a single spark.
