New Kwantic.co and Rive eLearning concept WIP - Using templates to improve development workflow Hey everyone! 👋 Some of you may have seen a post here a couple of weeks ago where I showed a short eLearning concept that I built with the help of the folks at Kwantic. Using Rive, we easily added animations to help create visually engaging interactions that can change based on a learner's input (check out my other posts to try it out). I’ve started work on a new eLearning concept for a fake smartwatch company, Key Fit. You can see a sneak peek of it in the video below. The learners' actions will change the Rive animation of the watch face. This works with the Kwantic logic system, Flows, a powerful way to trigger many different types of actions. I’ll be adding several more animation states soon that will respond to interactions such as knowledge checks, or action button clicks as the learner navigates through the course, giving visual feedback in an on-brand way. Once I’ve finished the initial course, I can use it as a template to create other courses on varied topics using the Kwantic course builder, improving my development workflow. I can choose the template in the builder, add some content on a different topic and let it do its magic! In this situation, I’d probably want to change the animated Rive visuals based on the topic of the new course. As long as I keep my variables in Rive consistent, Flows will allow me to drop new ones in with no changes to the logic; they come across with my template. You can try both Rive and Kwantic for free. Using Midjourney, you can now create consistent character images in different poses and expressions for scenario-based learning or other projects! 🎨 Key Points: ✨ Midjourney's character reference feature allows you to generate multiple images of the same character with relative consistency in facial features, hair, and outfits. 💡 Use the --cref parameter in your prompts, followed by the URL of the initial character image you want to reference. 🔑 Intentionally prompt for diversity in characters by specifying details like race, age, and clothing. 👍 While not perfect, the results are a significant improvement over previous AI image generation tools. ⏳ This technology is still new and evolving, so expect even better results in the future as the models improve. Let’s say you’re an instructional designer and you’re trying to get promoted. How do you achieve this goal? Well, there are a few ways you can go about this, and on today’s podcast and article, I’ll share with you 10 tips on how to get promoted as an instructional designer. I’ll also share about some thoughts that you should really consider such as is it worth it to get promoted? As someone who has taken a pay cut to get promoted before, that wasn’t a fun time. If your workload doubles, but you only receive a 3K raise, is it worth it? There are quite a few considerations that aren’t talked about enough and I want to make sure I’m transparent about them. You’ll also hear about the value of internal networking. When I wanted to become a senior instructional designer, and then an assistant director of instructional design, you can bet that I found people within my institution who went through these processes first and asked them a ton of questions. I’ve outlined some steps for you to take today to get the ball rolling. And of course, these tips may not apply to your organization. It’s so tough to give universal tips, but here’s my best advice. #Accessibility is often where the future already happened. All of the discussions of #AI art using text prompts reminds me that what they are attempting is the inversion of AltText image description. Using text to hold the meaning and emotion of visual imagery. What AltText shows is that language is not great at holding subtleties and tones of art. That’s because language isn’t good at such details. The book Language Versus Reality is good on why this is a problem. This modern inversion of the problem has not fixed the core linguistic problem and cannot fix it.

Overwhelm isn't just uncomfortable; it's a silent productivity killer. Even the most dedicated and disciplined educators can find themselves paralyzed by the sheer volume of tasks, responsibilities, and expectations placed upon them. This state of constant stress not only affects their well-being but also impacts the quality of education they can provide. For a profession where every minute counts, course materials should be designed to maximize the impact of every minute. To that end, Edtech products that focus on streamlining, automating, and moving users through the experience as efficiently as possible stand the greatest chance of fighting Overwhelm. We are not everything everywhere all at once. We are in one spot in the product (whether that’s print or digital) at a time, and the road to the next spot needs to be clear, short, and easy. This principle should guide our approach to course design on edtech platforms, focusing on two crucial elements: -The Path of Instruction: The carefully crafted journey through course content, guiding learners from their starting point to desired learning outcomes. -User Mechanics: The nuts and bolts of how teachers and students interact with the platform - the sequence of clicks, swipes, and navigational choices they make.

Check out this new resource from Education Design Lab: Skills Validation Guidebook. INTENDED AUDIENCE: The guidebook aims to inform, empower, and share findings with designers of skill validators, such as educators, instructional designers, and hiring managers, to support stakeholders in the skills-based ecosystem. THE GOAL: Without the ability to validate skills, employers rely on proxies (such as degrees) to screen for talent, which creates missed opportunities for both employers and opportunity seekers. But these skills are often simply asserted by candidates. Skills must be validated to establish trust and offer demonstrations of what a candidate knows and can do. WHY IT MATTERS: High-quality skill validators are essential for powering a skills-based ecosystem on behalf of opportunity seekers. Really good piece on the importance of critical thinking skills (and really all durable skills) in the age of GenAI. I like the components of critical thinking mentioned and they overlap with the definition in the Education Design Lab taxonomy we use in our work. GenAI also opens up new ways to develop and validate these skills, which plays into the methods for teaching critical thinking mentioned in the article. In the fall of 2015, I had a wild idea to pick up the xAPI adoption effort started by ADL with a tiny hand-picked group of 35 people. The xAPI Learning Cohort, led by the Learning Guild since 2022, has grown in numbers, strength and influence over the years. 9 years 18 Cohorts 20 xAPI Parties (we had a few extra parties that first year … it was fun!) (xAPI Party is the end-of-Cohort show-and-tell mini-conference) ~10k people enrolled So many projects Countless connections New skills New jobs ... heck, new job titles that didn't exist before! New businesses _____ And, exciting as xAPI is ... it is the data standard by which we report on something else that’s happening. The projects made in the Cohort have all been xAPI + Something Else. xAPI + Storyline xAPI + Video xAPI + Alexa xAPI + Slack xAPI + Alchemer xAPI + Unity xAPI + VR And a few of you are already working on xAPI + AI in conjunction with our team. I've been nurturing the seed of an idea and now seems the right time to do it. While the exact details are still being worked out—including a new name that broadens the scope beyond xAPI—we’re looking forward to continuing the tradition with fresh ideas and new opportunities for involvement.
