The “ Reality of Aid 2023 Report: Amplifying Southern Voices for 30 Years “ is now available and worth a read ( https://lnkd.in/gJ-VJq3S) This report contains useful insights relevant to current debates on the future of international development finance. The international community appears to be “ stuck” with an outdated system of international aid which satisfies few and whose efficacy is increasingly being publicly questioned. Key questions that need to be asked include: (1) Does it make sense to think of the massive finance needed to help countries adapt to and mitigate climate change as separate from, and additional to traditional development aid? Does this encourage recipient countries to think of climate finance as prediminantly “remedial” finance rather than as a source of important development finance that can help to transform their economies in a more sustainable, dynamic and profitable direction? (2) Is the traditional paradigm of “ international aid” based on a charitable approach towards countries in the Southern Hemisphere not an extremely outdated one, given a growing public awareness of colonialism and what is often referred to as the “ ecological debt” of developed countries in relation to less developed Sourhern countries? (3) Does our traditional aid architecture sufficiently address the need to strengthen and develop REGIONS as well as countries? (4) Are all relevant stakeholders- including businesses and civil society- sufficiently involved in deciding how international development finance is prioritised and spent? (5) Have international economic organisations such as the World Bank, the Workd Trade Organisation and the IMF sufficiently integrated human rights, sustainable development and climate action into their business models? How could this process be encouraged and accelerated? It is hard not to conclude that our international system of development finance needs to be considerably overhauled if the longer - term goal is to promote an integrated, dynamic, sustainable and successful global economy that delivers for all regions and states!

Saenz of MALDEF - Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, as we discussed what’s at stake in the upcoming presidential election. Our conversation highlighted the crucial role of coalitions and the importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in shaping a fairer future for all. But progress doesn’t happen by itself—we must act now to shape the future we want to see. I’ve been involved in facilitating the GLF (see below) since 2013. I ‘teach’ adaptive leadership and systemic change. I am not the only facilitator - just one in a great team -, and who knows what next year holds. I learn from the participants each year and the one things that stands in every cohort is the deep connections that they develop during the program. These deep connections between those in Buisness, Government, Not for Profit and Owner Operated Small Businesses will hold our state in good stead in the future. The relationships are what makes or breaks a system. A healthy system has diversity of participants and approaches and it learned from others within the system. This develops and enables the adaptability of the system and through its adaptability, its resilience. The future is going to be full of unpredictable disruptions and we need leadership from throughout our society that can flow with unpredictability, uncertainty, and opportunity to do things very differently.
