ComEd Hosting Capacity Map Now Updated Monthly to Enhance Interconnection Process for Solar Developers. “Our updated hosting capacity map provides developers every month with near real-time information about solar projects in the development queue, which is key to identifying the best available location to interconnect their project to our grid,” said Mark Baranek senior vice president of technical services, ComEd.” In October, ComEd received 2,250 new applications to interconnect with its electric system, which serves more than 4 million customers in northern Illinois. It was the seventh consecutive month with more than 2,000 applications to interconnect with ComEd’s grid, bringing the total applications received this year to 21,952, representing an all-time high for ComEd. Additionally, the 1,976 distributed energy resource (#DER) systems that ComEd completed in October represented 42 MW of DER generation capacity, a new one-month record. There are approximately 1,160 MW of DER interconnected to the ComEd system, including 460 MW from residential solar systems, 285 MW from community solar and more than 345 MW from commercial systems. This is the most authoritative piece I’ve read on emissions, and really highlights the benefit of living and operating a business in California. It should make emissions accounting much easier if the cost is already included in electric rates. Really interesting conversations at the California Energy Commission EPIC Symposium today. A lot of conversations about how we can get proven technologies to address climate change deployed faster. Leveraging software for permitting is going to be key for that.

I’m pleased to share Carbon Accountable's new “SB 253: A Regulations Roadmap”.  I wrote this brief with Michael Schmitz to show that the timely development of a robust set of implementing regulations for the California Climate Corporate Accountability Act #SB53 (Sen Scott Wiener) is eminently doable. The document presents exemplar regulations that clearly demonstrate the feasibility of adhering to the law’s requirement for first reporting by companies in 2026 and challenges the rationale for the proposed two year delay by the Governor's Office Office for this critical climate law. There’s been tremendous support and excitement worldwide for California as it joins the growing network of jurisdictions enacting mandatory corporate GHG emissions disclosure requirements including the EU with its new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and countries across the globe that are adopting the #ISSB standards. We spend a lot of time talking about how to cover climate change, but the fact is it's here. Instead of projections, local news orgs are deep into trials by fire, innovating as they go to keep their communities safe, informed and connected. It's ironic and wildly impressive that In the midst of AI hand-wringing and viral disinformation campaigns, innovation right now means going back to the basics in areas completely cut off by Helene's devastation. How are they doing it? Here's an initial short list, via an American Press Institute round-up, and other posts trickling in. If you have more, please feel free to add them in the comments -- I know I'm not the only person thinking a huge focus for support is equipping media for this new normal. -From CNN's Brian Stelter: Local radio stations have been a lifeline for residents, sharing updates on road closures, providing verified information on relief efforts and opening up the phone lines to answer questions and help connect people. -Daniel Williams and the folks at NC Local News Workshop helped developed a text-only, lite version of Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR) built on Newspack that was rapidly deployed to get critical information into the hands of folks in Western North Carolina struggling with weak cell service. There are no ads or images so it loads fast. On the heels of announcing how San Francisco has reduced citywide emissions by nearly half, I am excited to share that the San Francisco Environment Department has been awarded a $1 million grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to bolster climate action in our city’s most vulnerable communities. This significant funding is a leap forward in our mission to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all San Franciscans. CA climate disclosures potentially delayed until 2028 Governor Newsom has proposed an amendment delaying the CA climate law (SB 253) requiring disclosure of Scope 1 and 2 until 2028. The intent is to ensure the applicabilty and requirements are clear, and that CARB is fully set up to receive the information. Newsom has also proposed delaying the implementation of SB 261, dubbed the ‘Climate-Related Financial Risk Act’, from 2026 to 2028. The amendment will be voted on by lawmakers next month. Disclosure delays for clarity and effectiveness? Probably good. No one wants to be frustrated by a quick implementation timeline, unclear requirements or a disclosure portal that breaks down. Companies need time to put regulatory controls in place as well. While they do their work, we can keep making progress on climate transition plans and investments. These entities must be focused on commercializing clean energy technologies in California. The California PUC’s decision against CCSA's Net Value Billing Tariff is a sobering reminder of the continuing challenges in expanding community solar, and one that has left a chill among developers. Ultimately, we believe in the strengths of community solar and in this industry’s ability to continue advocating for enabling legislation, but we also believe that now may be the time for the industry to consider new angles to supporting community solar, a sentiment that was echoed at last week's #CommunitySolarSummit.
